butterfly: (You Cannot See Me)
I'm missing Buffy really hard this week. I just realized the other day that none of the shows that I currently watch have gay characters (and only two that I can think of that have acknowledged the existence of us queers in a positive fashion -- Smallville and Dexter. Doctor Who has both positive gay images and complex, strong, good women, but isn't currently airing). For all that Willow tended to be my least favorite Scooby and I found her passive-aggressive and frustrating, I miss having an acknowledged gay regular who has gay relationships on-screen.

Buffy had its race issues (though, by the last season, they were getting a bit better), but I really miss its pro-feminist/pro-queer slant.

Specifically, the notion that women come in a variety of personalities (and shapes) and that this is good. That women can be friends with each other (that women can be friends with men). That women can be leaders.

I am... both hopeful and fearful of where Supernatural is currently going, female character-wise. spoilers through Supernatural 3x05 -- Sin City )

I'm seriously considering dropping Heroes because the gender issues are making me uncomfortable. I still haven't watched last week's Prison Break because spoilers for Prison Break 3x05 ).

Dexter spoilers for Dexter 2x04 -- See-Through ).

*sigh*

And, of course, spoilers for Stargate Atlantis 4x05 ).

Smallville is doing fairly well (when it objectifies, it does tend to objectify both genders). Bones, Numb3rs, and House have their issues but do not tend to ever actually offend me.

I wanted to wait until all of my 'non-summer' television was over before I posted this, and Doctor Who had to go and air oddly, crossing over between fall-spring television nearly into summer. But now it's done and I feel able to sum up how I felt. So, in alphabetical order, what I watched this year:

I was impressed with the women on Prison Break last year. There were five intriguing, reoccuring female characters. spoilers for season two up through 'Subdivision' )

In retrospect, I'm more pleased with S1 of Supernatural now that I realize that, like everything else (writing, emotional intensity), the one-shot female characters of the show got better as the season went on. spoilers for Supernatural -- Season Two, Episode One -- In My Time of Dying )

So, from what I can tell, Prison Break takes place in the near future. I don't know if we have any physical prop evidence on-screen to refute this theory, but this is what I have to back it up. spoilers for the end of Season One )

So, does that make sense to people not me?

PS -- did the button to post entries randomly change to "Update Captain's Log" for anyone else?

Sorry for the radio silence. I've just been in one of those moods where I've been utterly unable to respond to anyone (I always feel horrible for it, but sometimes even the thought of clicking 'reply' makes my mind go blank in a really awful way). I haven't been having a bad set of days just... really kinda tiring. Overwhelmed, a bit.

I heard Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speak last week and it was... very emotionally affecting. I'm still thinking over everything that he said (he had some really great lines and just amazing delivery -- he speaks really quickly and a little... strangled but you can understand everything he says. He also has a slight accent going on -- says "cahnt" instead of "can't". There's also a lot of... Kennedy in his voice. I would know what family he was from even if I... didn't know what family he was from.).

Been watching Prison Break. Overall, I'm really enjoying the second seasonspoilers through episode 2x04 -- First Down ).

Watched the first two episodes of Housespoilers through episode 3x02 -- Cane and Able ).

Really enjoyed the Bones premiere, though the plotline about her parents was a bit lost on me, as my watching was spotty last year.

Oh! And I got Justin Timberlake's new CD in the mail today (also Christina's, as I had them shipped together so that I could get free shipping). Yay! New music from people I love!

I have been terribly (wonderfully?) distracted by Prison Break recently. Because! New episodes plus dvds equals giddy joy.

One thing that I really love about Prison Break (Supernatural and Numb3rs take note) is that the brothers hug. More than once. Whenever their high-stress situation warrants, actually. It is the nicest thing in the world. I can kinda understand why the other shows don't -- not all families are huggy and not all brothers are (I practically have to bribe my brother to hug him -- actually, I just tell him that I'm going to hug him and there's nothing he can do about it, and he deals with it but acts very put upon, as brothers tend to do). But it's still really, really nice to see it happen on Prison Break.

So, I got my Prison Break dvds today. Amazon shipped them on the 24th. I choose the free shipping choice (as I always do), which says that it takes five to seven days. My delivery estimate was August 29th to September 5th. Which means that I can a) watch high-quality versions of the episodes right now and b) start to make the PB vid that's been in my head for three days. Yay!

Also -- [livejournal.com profile] ladysorka, I received your check for the room. Thank you!

So, three of the returning shows that I'm watching this year feature pairs of brothers working together (Numb3rs, Prison Break, and Supernatural). A large part of why I'm watching the shows are because they're about strong, interesting sibling relationships.

Which brings me to a point -- where are the women? Where are the really good brother-sister or sister-sister shows? Joss Whedon should not be the only person in television capable of creating an interesting brother-sister relationship that drives the narrative forward (if you do know of any shows with strong, interesting b-s or s-s relationships, I would be thrilled to know about them).

The interesting thing (to me) is how Simon-River actually follows the 'format' of all three cited brother-brother dramatic relationships -- the younger sibling is the smarter of the two, the older starts out as/tries to be the physical protector of the two. The most straight-up example of this dynamic is Numb3rs, where Charlie and Don are pretty much set in their roles -- I doubt that we'll ever see Charlie shoot a bad guy to save Don, instead, he always uses his brain to help save his big brother (I admit to the possibility of being wrong). Supernatural also tends more toward this side of the scale -- Sam is the victim more often than not, the researcher more often than not, the one who went to college (each of the younger siblings is spot-lit in their series for 'having gone away to an important school' -- Charlie to Princeton at thirteen, Sam to Stanford, River to the Academy at a young age, Michael to Princeton).

Prison Break and Firefly each take a slightly different approach. While it's implied in Prison Break that Lincoln took care of the younger Michael, in the series itself, Michael is the rescuer of his older brother (who does still try to protect Michael, though Michael has, so far, always had it enough under control not to need Lincoln's help). In Firefly, we start out with an older brother-protector/younger sibling-protected dynamic but, by the end of the series (and into the movie), the roles have pretty much equalized, with River being the more proactive fighter.

So, if anyone was wondering where I've been the last few days, I've been inhaling Prison Break. I saw a kick-ass vid for it at Vividcon and... I have now seen the entire first season. Michael Scofield, man. He's the best little brother ever. And I really love the show.

But now I have found out that the Prison Break season two premiere aired today and I missed it because I had no idea it was starting this early (I didn't get a chance to really read my flist before work tonight). This saddens me deeply. I shall now attempt to find out if they're reairing it any time soon.

ETA: I discovered that it reairs on Wednesday! This time, I shall be ready for it!

ETA2: Apparently, SG-1 has been cancelled. I suspect I shall be very down about this once it sinks in that it's really happened.
