So, that church that I pass every night changed its billboard. Unfortunately, they changed it to "If your relgion doesn't take you to church, chances are that it won't take you to heaven." Dude, I don't want to be in a heaven with people who can't even spell the word 'religion' (and, yeah, there isn't a letter missing or anything. And it's been that way for at least a week now. Very depressing.).

Glory.

Second thing:
So, I watched Shallow Grave, which was next on my Quest to See All of Ewan McGregor's Movies.
Spoilers for Shallow Grave )

I'm not in a fit state to talk about Katrina. It's... overwhelmingly horrifying right now. My family lived in Louisiana back when I was too young to remember more than fragments -- it's always been right up there with Germany for the places I wanted to see one day as an adult, so that I could remember them properly.

Briefly:
I rented the first two seasons of Homicide: Life on the Streets from netflix, but knew by the end of the first episode that it wasn't a show that was meant for me. I liked some of the characters, and I did think that the Bayliss and Pembleton interaction was interesting, but the format, editing, and even the way they filmed the show itself does nothing but turn me off. I can see where it's a good show (much in the same way that I can see where The Lord of the Rings is a good book), but it's not my thing.

At Length:
And now, onto something that was so totally my thing.

I really liked The Island. It's not doing too well in theaters (Though, honestly I believe that part of that is because the trailer for the movie sucks so very much. It gives away far too much and it... is not a good trailer, otherwise, dammit. Seriously, if your movie is called The Island, you should not put the line "there is no island" in the damn trailer, thank you.), which might bother me if I had the impression that Ewan actually cares about how much money the films he shows up in make. Also, if I personally cared whether the movies I like are box office hits. I've noticed that my tastes run across the board -- sometimes I like the current flavor of the month and sometimes I wonder what the film industry is smoking.

I'm probably not going to see it in theatres again (there is a very short list of movies that I will see in theaters more than once and the list of movies that I will see in theaters all by myself is even shorter... hell, the list of movies that I will bother seeing in theaters at all is fairly short, to be honest, though I could spend hours watching trailers), but I already know that I'll want it on dvd so that I can rewatch in detail.

Recently, on my flist, [livejournal.com profile] inyron pointed to a link where a website informs us Spoilers! Spoilers for both 'The Island' and the other movie, of which the very title is a spoiler )

It... just... I do realise that the 'Warning: OMG, these movies are so alike!' is based off of very brief summaries of both movies, but still.

The plot of The Island makes actual sense. The characters make actual sense.

Maybe the directors/writers/etc of The Island should cop to there being a link except... dude, it's a sucky horror movie. As a person who has seen far too many sucky horror movies, I can understand not wanting to explicitly connect your film to... you know, a sucky horror movie that happened to have an interesting idea.

Clearly, I have no sense of copyright ethics, but we already knew that (ownership at all is a tenous and shifting idea to me -- sometimes I understand the urge and pull of being able to say 'mine' about something and other days I wonder what the fuss is).

So, my mom got me tickets to a preview showing of The Island after I mentioned that I wanted to see it because of the, you know, tiny little thing that I have for Ewan McGregor.

Basically, I loved it. I loved the sci-fi, I loved the action, and I absolutely loved the characters. Ewan, as always, created a wonderfully comprehensive and understandable character, but I found the other characters fascinating as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing it again, so that I can process it.

Asking me to choose a favorite Ewan McGregor movie would be like asking me to choose a favorite Buffy episode. Sure, I can do it, but if you ask me again tomorrow, I'll probably have a different answer (for the curious, my favorite BtVS episode of this moment in time is Selfless from season 7. Thank you and have a nice day.).

Today, my favorite Ewan McGregor movie is Velvet Goldmine. I can't remember just when I first saw it -- it was probably post-Moulin Rouge, when I felt my first feelings of adoration for Ewan. Regardless, it's such a fun, mind-twisting little movie.
spoilers for VG )

And for something completely different:

Sci-Fi Friday! Eeee! I'm exceedingly excited.

I'm also very much looking forward to the new Harry Potter. Fannish things, yay!
butterfly: (Default)
So, I have two Ewan McGregor movies rattling about in my head, longing to be compared. They are, of course, Moulin Rouge and Young Adam.
Cut for spoilers for both movies )

Young Adam

Ewan (or his agent, or whoever) has a really good eye for scripts. His ratio of quality to crap is much higher than most actors, I've noticed.

Perhaps part of that is because he doesn't worry about his image, so he takes the roles that appeal to him, when other actors might balk because of external concerns. He's certainly taken his clothes off more than any other mainstream actor that I can think of. Of course, it probably helps that he looks very nice naked.
Young Adam spoilers )
Lovely, twisty movie. Very nice to look at, though any movie with Ewan in it automatically has something nice to look at in it.

1. I dislike calling in sick to work. Correction: I dislike disappointing people. But I've been coughing for the last two days (which were my days off) and I sound like I've spent the last forty years smoking, so really, drive-through is kinda out. Plus, the horrid cough just might put people off their food.

2. VividCon-ish people that I am rooming with ([livejournal.com profile] _par_avion and [livejournal.com profile] annavtree), you should probably know that [livejournal.com profile] greensilver (who was a last-minute addition from the wait list and yay for her!) asked her flist for room-age 18th-20th and I offered. I've had her on my flist ages, wonderful person, great sense of humor. SG-1 fan.

3. I have seen the first series (and part of the second) of Red Dwarf. And was exceedingly amused and (at points) pretty touched. Because it's very silly, but Lister has a pretty good heart. He and Rimmer become closer over time, yeah? Because you can really see him feeling empathy for Rimmer, who starts out as a very shallow, petty, and insecure person (with a really nice ass).

4. For the last few days, my internet access has been very limited, hence my only posting story bits, which I deemed of vital importance. Now that I'm back on as normal, I expect my usual style to resume.

5. Stargate's new seasons start next week! Isn't that fabulous? It is. Very much. And I'm really looking forward to seeing the second season of Battlestar Galatica.

6. Have recently discovered that Ewan McGregor is the only actor that I've gone to a film for. I've always had additional reasons in other cases. But with Ewan, he just needs to be in a movie and I'll decide it's worth seeing.

7. I think that I may go back to sleep now.
butterfly: (Exposed -- Emma (by thete1))
So, I just saw The Pillow Book. And... really wasn't prepared. I knew the big thing that was going to happen, but the movie itself was... very much a surprise
Brief but very significant spoilers )
You know, I may still be in a slight state of shock.

Though Ewan McGregor really is unspeakably beautiful in this movie. I mean. Good Lord.

And now, I'm going to go watch Young Adam.
butterfly: (Fall -- Inara/Mal (by seanarenay))
Moulin Rouge still makes me cry at the end.

Ewan fucking McGregor, man. Of course, Baz is partly to blame, since he doesn't have a problem with actors seriously crying (see: Romeo and Juliet for more ugly and real crying from a Baz film). And Nicole is perfect in this, truly. Gorgeous and tragic and, dude, her skin glows.

I've seen this film... I couldn't possibly count the number of times. And yet, it captures me each time. I laugh and weep with just as much fervor as the first time I saw it in theaters. It's such an intensely cathartic movie -- it gives you permission to feel on an epic scale.
butterfly: (The Cost -- Anakin)
It's amazing how much more interesting things are when you care. Well, not amazing so much as obvious, but still.
Also contains spoilers for Revenge of the Sith )

So, I've been going through and tagging things, starting from the beginning. Partly because I like exploring these things and how I used to feel.
history )

And thus it was that 2001 was tagged. I'll do 2002-2005 later. Perhaps tonight.

So, I am settling into my new digs and my new job (it's the same company, sure, but wow, this place is run differently...) and I feel that I am adjusting. The roommate and younglings don't need terrible much adjusting to, as I'd gotten used to them over time, in weekends and such. Though [livejournal.com profile] jic is much more social than I am, I must say. I'm the sort who is perfectly comfortable doing all her communicating via the internet, because I do suffer from acute shyness (I'm told that I'm quite good at hiding it, which isn't really a good thing).

I have been, as some of you may have noticed, viciously attacked by the vidding bug. It's taken hold of me and is slowly injecting its poison into me. I'm doomed now.

I've also been bitten by Star Wars. It's the friendship that draws me in the most, which is generally the case. Passionate friendships are my favorite thing in all of fiction. People who understand each other on this deep level and yet who can disagree about some fundamental things, yet never stop caring.Spoiler for Revenge of the Sith ) And I think that I need to see the movie again. Possibly on Wednesday.

But though I'm distracted by the shiny new toy, I'm still seriously looking forward to SG-1, BSG, and Atlantis in July. And my SG-1 Mirror AU is slowly moving forward (sloooooooowly, like continental drift slow, but moving).

[livejournal.com profile] jic --
I have a clip that has Ewan introducing himself, so when you get back from vacation, you'll get to hear him pronounce his name.

*sigh*

In his accent. Which is pretty. So pretty. And there's practice fighting between Ewan and Hayden and it's, again, so very pretty.

Oh, and the cats are still alive.

1. AOTC was fun. I love Ewan McGregor.

2. I got [livejournal.com profile] saavamail! Whee! I got my beauty shirt(in a 'lil *nsync lunchbox!) and! two CDs! I'm listening to the W/T mix right now! Whee! And three! Books! Eeee! Turtle Moon, Wicked(which I've wanted to read for a while), and The River King! And! Videos! Eee! The English Patient and Romeo's Blue Skies!
