butterfly: (Cold and broken - Wes/Fred)
It's fascinating how very parental Angel is to Wesley and Cordy in Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2. I'm so used to thinking of them all as equals that it surprises me when I rewatch and see him treat them like a pair of squabbling siblings (though that is how they act much of the time).

When Angel fires them, Wesley and Cordy are forced to become independent fast. And when Angel does come back, he isn't dealing with the 'children' he left behind. Both of them have changed, grown.

Cordy is suddenly more than just adopted family - she was a strong woman who'd stood up to him when he was physically threatening her. When I think about, his turning evermore towards her in S2 and then S3 makes sense. He'd just had this huge epiphany about caring and such, and here was this chance to prove himself. He could prove to Cordy that he was a champion (as he needed to prove to Darla that he was a demon and to Buffy that he was a hero - when it comes to impressing the people he loves, Angel goes all-out).

And then there's Wesley. The Wesley/Angel relationship gets more complicated the more I think about it. But, in the end, it seems to echo what is always Wes' tragedy - he loves more than he is loved. Of course, this may be in part because Wes loves a scary amount. Wesley's love isn't the most comforting thing to have, really.

On a different subject, it must be a bit nerve-wracking to write Fred, at times. After all, she's the only female regular on the show. It's 'the boys and Fred'. And only with Angel could that sentence ever make sense.

Back onto the first subject, S4 is when an equal Wes/Angel relationship is finally allowed to form. Wes both betrayed and saved Angel, and he's never going to be Angel's 'faithful servant' again. But that's all well and good, because a Wesley with some darkness is a Wesley that can understand more of Angel. Already, he'd understood a great deal of Angel - more than Cordy ever did.

Of course, then Angel decided to save his son. Which is all well and good, only it set the Wes/Angel relationship back a bit (and don't tell me that Angel didn't enjoy having that back). Not too far, but far enough that Wes' gloss hadn't all been rubbed away yet.

But Angel is what caused that surface to get removed in the first place. Angel is the agent of Wesley's change. I'm not entirely sure that Angel understands that. He's the reason that Wesley was able to move past assuming a shell of his father's personality. His absence is what made Wesley take charge. His son is what caused Wesley's downfall. All of Wesley's changes have been because of Angel. And Angel's still there, still having an effect on Wes.

First off, it's snowing. It's really snowing.

Last year, we only got the smallest bit of wimpy snow - and that wasn't until year's end.

It's only November 19th and it's really snowing.

Right... where was I?

Farscape is coming back from the dead. This on the heels of hearing about Firefly's movie incarnation has reminded me that if a show is beloved by fans and creators, it will fight until it gets its proper end (as due South did).

As long as you love something, it's alive to you, and, like with Buffy, love and sacrifice and need will bring it back. Truth in fiction.

Now, I'm off to make myself a Farscape icon.

And possibly also a snow/winter icon.

Snow!

And on another note, I can now fit into a pair of jeans that I haven't been able to in a couple of years.

butterfly: (just a girl - Eve)
The engine blew up.

Apparently it was the radiator. There was a leak, or something, and I lost all my anti-freeze. So the engine dried out and went boom.

So, it'll take about two weeks (and $2000) to fix. So starting tomorrow, for the next two weeks I'll have a rental car.

Mom's paying for all this, which is lucky, because I don't have anywhere near enough.

While I wait impartiently for tonight's new Angel, I'm rewatching more of S2. Naturally, I've had more thoughts on it.

Dear Boy - Ah-ha. This is the episode that lets us know that vampires can tell when a woman's a virgin (Angelus mentions that the three daughters are all virgins), which comes into play in Inside Out as a handy way for Connor to find one.

"Let her go, bro - that way lies badness." Truer words were never spoken. Angel lost a lot chasing Darla. And, of course, sleeping with Darla led to Connor led to Jasmine.

"This is way off your path." Just what did Lorne see in Angel's path?

It all comes down to a choice. And you don't know what the consequences will be, but you have to make it anyway.

"Killing is so merciful in the end, isn't it? The pain is ended."
That reminds me of Connor. Or rather, Connor reminds me of that, I suppose.

"There's nothing that I respect more than loyalty... but if the bad Angel walks through that door I will kill him in two seconds flat."
And that reminded me of Gunn's quick turn-around on Wes in S3.

Guise Will Be Guise - I love how defensive this whole thing makes Angel. He's so lost at first, dealing with this mature, take-charge Wesley.

Oh, and gah. Wes is so sexy in this episode. This is the first time that Wesley takes off his glasses for a significant period of time and it really does make him look different. He looks... oddly both more dangerous and yet also more vulnerable.

Darla - Great episode. Oddly enough, I don't really have any thoughts on it. I think that I'm too busy wondering about what'll happen tonight in Destiny.

The Shroud of Rahmon - I'd just like to say that Angel as Jay-Don amuses the hell out of me. Of course, I enjoy it when Angel gets to play a role. Which isn't at all the same as when Angel himself is a big dork, which I find less endearing. And it's actually pretty deep, in retrospect. But again, I can't seem to concentrate on the past when a new episode is so close.

spoilers for Angel 5x08 - Destiny )

So, tonight, I'm finally going to update my website. It's been a while, so it may take all night.

And it'll give Destiny time to sink in. I do need time to process these things. Not really much for deep thoughts the second I see something new.

I will say that I'm very much enjoying this fifth season of Angel and I'm dearly hoping for a sixth.
