I watch TV that isn't TVD sometimes...
Feb. 24th, 2013 02:05 pmSo, I'm actually keeping up with a few different shows. I'm not watching them all in real-time, but I'm more or less caught up on several:
Supernatural -- On balance, I'm having a great deal of fun. I went into the show expecting it to be as problematic as it was when I left in S4 and it's actually a bit better, especially with women and queer characters. I talk about this show A LOT on tumblr. It's kinda funny, because I went onto tumblr for Teen Wolf but I'm all about SPN there these days. I love the main plotline and I'm increasingly convinced that the show actually means to have Dean come out as bisexual which is something I never would have expected, going back into the show again.
The Following -- I'm... hesitant to suggest this show to anyone. The acting is great and I like the cat-and-mouse, but the show is troublesome in several ways. Several of the main characters are serial killers. There's some torture-porn, with women as the victims for the most part. Sexism and some racism issues as well. And there's some use of the 'depraved bisexual' trope -- a love triangle on the show was resolved with a threesome... but the love triangle in question consists of two serial killers and one wannabe serial killer. So, like I said, hesitant to recommend it. But if a show about a cult of serial killers sounds intriguing to you and my rather long list of warnings/caveats didn't throw you off, it's worth a try.
Elementary -- is a place of joy and squee. I love the show to pieces. I love the way they're creating the relationship and I love both the characters. I really love how Joan, despite her technical job, was never a 'genius wrangler' and it's very exciting to see where the show is going with Joan and Sherlock's partnership.
Revenge -- this is my drama-soap place of epic feelings. Everything is so vivid and bigger-than-life. My one tiny thing is I've never been able to get into Aidan's character the way I think the show wants me to. But I've really been loving Nolan's storyline and what happened with Amanda broke my heart.
Once Upon a Time -- I love this show. I can't really get all that deeply into the fandom because I am not super-sympathetic towards the villain woobies. Regina is a great character but, man, some people really seem to cut her all the slack in the world (for rape, murder, kidnapping, attempted brainwashing of a child) while coming down like a ton of bricks on relatively minor infractions by the Snowings family. It's like being in Smallville fandom all over again, except even more extreme in about every possible way. But I'm going to continue to watch and enjoy the actual show.

Date: 2013-02-27 12:49 am (UTC)I saw a gif of the threesome in The Following on Tumblr and was briefly interested, but I've heard all that other stuff about it, too. Also, I just don't think I can watch a show so heavily focused on serial killing - I can't even watch Criminal Minds regularly, and I think the cast is great.
Elementary is awesome. I just love Sherlock & Joan's relationship. I really enjoy the show so much.

Yeah, I've not been a big fan of him either, especially since it cut into Emily'n'Nolan time. However, I liked him better recently when he was helping Padma with her issues. I don't know. And OMG, the Amanda plot line. I've never been a huge fan, but I really felt it when she died.
I'm still enjoying OUAT too, but I'm very much sticking to my own flist and dashboard with this one. Although even that doesn't help sometimes because I'm following a couple OUAT comms and the comment threads in those places can get a little hairy sometimes, good grief.

This. I think Regina is an awesome character and I love her actress, but OMG. This is the same damn problem I have with Loki in The Avengers. But then I'm not really good with villains who aren't truly trying to redeem themselves, and I have always disliked enemy-shipping. I mean, I can almost see where people get Regina/Emma from? But I just can't see Emma ever going there after everything, you know?

*wince* Ugh, flashback. You would have thought Clark was the evilest evildoer that ever was.

Date: 2013-02-27 01:44 am (UTC)I never would have suspected it without what's been happening in S8. The narrative weight is building towards something, both with Dean and with Dean & Cas. Plus, we have Misha just being announced as a regular in S9. They could have kept things the same as they'd been in previous seasons but instead we've been getting, well, S8.

Yeah, it's pretty much entirely about a serial killer who inspires other serial killers, so if that's not your thing, it's not a show you'd enjoy.

They are love.

Yeah, I like Aiden better when he's interacting with non-Emily cast members, I think. It rounds him out as a character.
I loved Amanda, so it was very painful for me to watch her die. Especially since I did think she and Jack have a lot more chemistry than Emily and Jack, so I worry that they're using this as a way to try to re-start that relationship.

Yep. I run across stuff on tumblr sometimes that just makes me face-palm.

Yeah. Regina basically plays at being good for Henry, while Henry's watching but otherwise doesn't care. And that's not redemption. Henry is not and cannot be her moral guardian. And talk about a heavy burden to lay on a young kid.
*wince* Ugh, flashback. You would have thought Clark was the evilest evildoer that ever was.
Yeah, and none of the Lex extremists ever took into account Clark's fears or feelings. The show illustrated several times how utterly terrified Clark was of what might happened if his secret were discovered and the extremists basically handwaved it and said "well, he should have just trusted Lex". No. Clark is not obligated to hand over all his secrets to Lex as the price of friendship. That's not what friendship is. Clark is not Lex's moral guardian and he shouldn't be obligated into being one. It's emotional blackmail for someone to say "If you aren't here for me, I will do bad things to people".
