Precision of language
Jan. 1st, 2002 06:11 amWherein I am suddenly in a much better mood for no apparent reason.
I've mentioned my being an anal bitch about people saying what they mean. But I've noticed my own... well, exaggerations.
I often mention being 'in love' with someone or other. Obviously, I'm not 'in love' with all of these people. I just find them fascinating, incredibly attractive, and generally have fantazied about them. But when I say that I'm in love with them, I'm stretching the truth. It doesn't really affect anything, since y'all know what I mean, but it's still hyperbole.(I was 17 before I learned that that's not pronounced 'hy-per-bowl')
I've never been in love. I want to be in love. It's one of the Things that every person should experience in their life.
Anyway, I looked 'love' up to see just what the dictionary had to say.
love (lv)

1. A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.
2. A feeling of intense desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair; the emotion of sex and romance.
3. Sexual passion.
4. Sexual intercourse.
5. An intense emotional attachment, as for a pet or treasured object.
6. A person who is the object of deep or intense affection or attraction; beloved. Often used as a term of endearment.
7. An expression of one's affection
8. A strong predilection or enthusiasm
9. The object of such an enthusiasm
On second thought, I am so totally in love with Lance. And Christina. Nicholas, too. I mean, affection, desire, attraction, passion.
Yep. In love.
