Outside

Sometimes Joey envied Justin and Lance. They were In Love and Justin was probably the most romantic guy that Joey'd ever met. Lance probably got more gifts and surprises in a month than most women got in a lifetime. And even though Joey had never heard him say the words, he knew that Lance was in love.

They didn't have the easiest relationship, though. Their fights were horrible, filled with quiet bitter words, ending with Lance burying himself in work and Justin writing song after song about the hopelessness of life or spending hours playing golf or basketball. They never yelled at each other, at least not where anyone could hear, and when they were on the outs, their conversations were polite and measured, no words spoken beyond the need for basic communication.

When he was alone with Lance, though, he got to hear long rants on Justin's faults. At the same time, Lance would immediately turn on anyone who dared to agree with him. If anyone else tried to suggest that Justin was less than perfect, they got a horrified and hostile response and were then coldly ignored for at least an hour. And no one could ignore with as much disdain as Lance Bass. As long as you didn't exist to him, it really almost felt like you didn't exist at all.

And at those times, Joey was glad that he didn't have that kind of relationship. He and Kelly fought, but once they were done yelling, they were friends again.
