Doctor Who: Rose and The End of the World
Apr. 11th, 2007 01:14 pmYesterday was a really, really crappy day (my bike had a flat, needed to borrow my roommate's at the last minute and it has no light which was so much fun at eight-nine o'clock at night, plus I had to work half an hour past when I was scheduled off and my period is just starting, so my hormones hate me right now). So, when I had a bit of a headache this morning, I phoned in sick.
To give myself a bit of a boost, I rewatched Rose and The End of the World.
I totally fell for Rose in her first episode. It wasn't until that second episode that I fell for the Doctor. But Rose... so brave and smart and persistent. And she enjoys the rush of the danger so much. She smiles in Rose, after she's defeated the Nestene Consciousness and before getting into the TARDIS, and it just makes me think about how she really was made for this life, with the Doctor.
She loves it. The adventure and the thrill.
And then in The End of the World, we get to see her experience culture shock and work through it. Realize that though Raffalo is blue, it makes her no less a person. We see her show compassion for Cassandra ('help her'), despite Cassandra trying to kill her and others.
And we see her decide that it's worth it.
"You've seen how dangerous it is. You want to go home?"
Rose's introduction to the Doctor's world feels so epic (which continues in The Unquiet Dead, where she also gets to see that sometimes the Doctor gets it wrong and that's where I feel the first bits of romance between them, when the Doctor looks at her and says that she's beautiful, when he holds her hand and tells her that he's so glad he met her). The end of the world, the turn of the earth, clinging to each other.
Plus, The End of the World also features the very kick-ass Jabe, helping the Doctor out while Rose is pissing off Cassandra and getting nearly murdered. Jabe was pretty fantastic.

Date: 2007-04-11 08:43 pm (UTC)I love how the Doctor doesn't really want to be a mystery to Rose. He wants her to understand him, but he can't really explain in words. So he shows her who he is, with all the pain and beauty that's inside him.
I just... I've watched some of the old Who and I've watched the two new episodes, and the way he reacts to Rose is just markedly different than the way he reacts to anyone else. There are parts of the relationship that are similar to the traditional Doctor&Companion relationship, but even this early on, he doesn't want to be that mysterious and unknowable man to her. He keeps slipping, keeps giving her emotional insights.

Nice point. :)

Date: 2007-04-12 03:14 am (UTC)She's so great. Like, the Doctor saying about Shakespeare that he was 'the most human human ever' (or whatever he said) and was so enthused about that, it made me think about how wonderfully human Rose was, and how he loved that about her.

They are such wonderful introduction episodes, both to Rose and to the Doctor's world.

Date: 2007-04-12 01:32 am (UTC)I actually started with “The Christmas Invasion,” and I fell in love with Rose when she stepped up and said, “Someone’s gotta be the Doctor.” (I sympathized with her before that, but that’s definitely when I fell in love.) So technically, I was in love with Rose before I even met the Doctor. Which probably explains a lot.

Date: 2007-04-12 03:22 am (UTC)Rose is amazing in TCI. She's just gone through the trial of a lifetime in The Parting of the Ways and we see such fantastic range from her in TCI -- grief over losing the Doctor, joy over finding anew in Ten, bravery and fear and hope. Billie Piper did such an amazing job as Rose.

Date: 2007-04-12 10:55 pm (UTC)I've seen the first episode of the new Doctor Who, and I do like Martha, but Rose was my first Companion, and I don't think I'll ever feel quite the same way about another Companion.

I quite agree. Rose is special to me. I've watched some of the older episodes and the first two of the season three, and Rose's place in my heart hasn't been touched.

Date: 2007-05-06 03:25 pm (UTC)I recently added you as a friend, (and I hope you don't mind), because I love reading your Dr. Who essays/observations and it appears we have a few other interests in common.
I've been marathoning the first two series recently and I'm up to Father's Day now. I just wanted to say that I agree about Rose's epic introduction to the Doctor's world. His speech about the earth turning is one of my favorites, because it's so poetic and dramatic and you know that Rose can't turn back after hearing it. Also, I agree that the first inklings of romantic feelings showed up in The Unquiet Dead. I had forgotten, (until I watched it again recently), how much the Doctor is enthralled/amused/happy with Rose during that episode, (barring the times when they are arguing, of course). And then there's the "I'm so glad I met you" scene, which is one I've watched several times, because it never gets old. The looks/smiles on both their faces in that scene is what does me in every time. :)
Oh, and feel free to take a look around my LJ, and if you have any questions, please comment.
