butterfly | Vid Remaster: Prayer (Supernatural; Dean Winchester; Season One)

So, a couple of people on my flist recently asked about SPN vids and I happily mentioned my vid to Prayer. And then I went and rewatched it and realized that I never uploaded the new version of the vid that I'd made from the dvds. I'd just made it and then gone on with my life. So, nearly the same vid, but with better picture quality and no freaking logo in the lower right. All S1 footage, no spoilers for S2.

Vidding Notes: Prayer

I love the Winchester boys. Seriously, I'm so intensely glad that I met them. Because they love each other so much and they're just so amazing. I adore them both, but I think that I may love Dean just the tiniest bit more. And the reason I think that is because Dean is the one who inspired me to make a vid about him. Granted, the second half of the vid is all about how much he adores his little brother, but that's pretty much what half of the show is about (the other half being about how much Sam loves his big brother).

Technical Stuff: Now, I adore the visual look of Supernatural, but the second I started doing this vid, I knew that I'd be fucking around with the colors. Dean is a very emotionally volatile guy (for all his professed hate of chick-flick moments) and I wanted that to pop. Dean's world is washed in blood but Dean's world also has saving people and Sam, and the emotional power of the show really gets to me. Again, these are all things that I wanted to show in the vid. At the time I made it, this was the fastest vid that I'd ever done -- quick cuts, flipping between moments. Again, all the influence of Dean and the music.

There was never a moment when I didn't have the color changes for this vid picked out -- I did the woman in white sequence first and just after I'd put her down, I copied the clip and tinted it red, laid it on top. When I did Dean coming up from the water (DitW), I went and upped the saturation because it fit the music too much not to (incidentally, that isn't saturation 200%, it's saturation 200% doubled -- our boys are hella desaturated in the originals).

Content Stuff: Something that I did very deliberately was keep Sam entirely out of the first verse/chorus (there are a couple of places where you can see little bits of him, but just cut-off and the edge of the screen).The first time that Sam's face is on-screen at all is at 1:12, Dean slamming him up against the bridge, because we're about to move into the second verse, where it all becomes about Sam. I wanted to keep Sam out of the first part because Dean saving other people is an essential part of his character (especially in S1) and because I wanted to move from the more general saving of people to the specific saving of this most important person. It's all about Sam, except when it isn't.

Mostly, I made this vid because I watched twenty-two episodes of show in four days and had to express my overwhelming love for the Winchesters. And that hasn't changed a bit. Overwhelming love, people.
