Characterizations

I seem to have a fairly unusual view of canon. And maybe it comes from the fact that I was raised by fantasy and rpg freaks (not that I don't love my parents dearly, of course).

My view, in one sentence:

If it's canon, it's never out of character.

Bad writer? Lack of plot? Hell, lack of acting ability? These things matter not to me.

And hey, maybe Buffy spoiled me by being so brilliant at this whole writing thing. Season Six Spike has a clear connection to Season Two Spike. Season Six Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles can all be traced back to their Season One selves. I saw Willow's breakdown coming even before the chicklet got into magic.

I guess, with me, once something has been created, it's as if an entire world comes into form around it, even if the creator doesn't know it.

Which is maybe part of why I can read fanfic for shows that I've never seen. Each writer creates their own form of canon.
