The reason that it doesn't want Buffy dead is because, as Giles and Anya found out, Buffy being alive is the only reason it has this chance! If she dies, it loses!

Oh, fuck.

Is it just that she's alive? I thought that it was because of the spell. So MY horribly thought was that they're gonna have to go back to the end of season five and just let her stay dead. Talk about depressing options...

Well, the First told the vampire not to kill her, so I'm thinking there has to be a reason. And this was the first thing that popped to mind.

Her being alive - after dying mystically - is screwing with the order of things.

And dude, they would not go back to season five, because. Because then Anya and Xander would still be engaged and I just won't have it.

I think that's misdirection

I think that what's causing the mystical whatever to get tangled isn't so much that Buffy's alive as that Buffy *and Faith* are alive at the same time. You can see how that might cause the line of Slayer succession to get mixed up. And then when Buffy dies, the Slayer Gene doesn't know what to do. That's my theory, anyway.

And I'm not sure it told the vampire not to kill Buffy. It just said not to kill "her", which could be almost anyone. Maybe it needs Dawn alive. Or Willow.

But the First's harbringers did try to kill Dawn in Never Leave Me,/i>, so it can't be her. And it purposefully avoided killing Buffy twice. It could be a misdirection for Willow, maybe.

And then when Buffy dies, the Slayer Gene doesn't know what to do. That's my theory, anyway.

Like, should it reimbue Faith, find someone new, or just give up? I can see that. Poor misled gene.

Only, in that case, wouldn't the First have tried back when Kendra was first called and Buffy was still hanging around?

so it can't be her.

Yeah, I guess. But there are still plenty of people it could have meant besides Buffy. And if it really didn't want to kill Buffy, wouldn't it have avoided the big final fight under the searchlights? It wasn't acting like it wanted to spare Buffy there.

Only, in that case, wouldn't the First have tried back when Kendra was first called and Buffy was still hanging around?

Um.

Okay, wait. I'm sure I can come up with -- okay, got it.

I have two possible explanations. First, even with Kendra, things were relatively straightforward. Slayer A dies, spawns Slayer B. Slayer A wasn't entirely dead, so you have both Slayers A and B at once. Not all that complicated. Then Slayer B dies, spawns Slayer C. Slayer A dies a second time, then comes back to life again. At this point, things are just weird. The Slayer gene has to be wondering if, when Slayer C dies, it should go spawn a new Slayer, wait for Slayer C to come back to life, or just let Slayer A handle things. So the First Evil makes its move.

Alternately, maybe the First Evil started working when Kendra showed up, but it just works slow. Good old-fashioned Evil can't be rushed.
