Fanfic Rec:

I really enjoy reading recommendation pages (especially for fandoms that I don't write in - no conflict of interest) because I love knowing what people like. And I like knowing the reason that a certain story is liked by a certain person. And so on. Therefore, I've decided to rec a story at least once a week and archive the recs on my site. Also, I'm going to send the gushy part of the rec to the author, killing two birds with one stone. Since I walk in some fandoms (or at least pairings) uncommon, some of these will probably not be widely known. Or at all.
The Cure is an eight-part series by Lori Bush, who is, incidentally, also a Gabrielle/Joxer writer. Her site is here.
The series is set after Season Five, Buffy is resurrected, but a different way. And this Buffy follows a different path. The basic premise of the story is that rather than Willow taking charge after Buffy's death, it was Xander who does. And after Buffy returns, Dawn suggests that he move into the house with them to save money after Anya leaves him for putting everything in the world before her. We open with the three of them sharing space and Buffy realizing that Xander is quite a hunk.
So she decides that a purely friendly sexual relationship is just the thing for both of them. Unfortunately, Xander is still in love with her. And that's how it all starts.
This series is sexy, sweet, at times hilarious and at times nearly heart-breaking. Lori covers all of the important things that need to be dealt with - even bringing in Angel and Cordy with a vision. The sex is great by itself, but then she'll throw in something that makes you think about the deeper emotions behind it all. And the emotional arc doesn't move too quickly or drag along. From my own personal perspective, the characters all ring true and I particularly loved seeing a very teenaged Dawn who can be both annoying and sweet. The ending is sweet, bordering on sappy in the best way.
