Because of the new rules, no one in my family can give blood anymore. Because we were in Germany for a couple of years in the '80s.

Of course, the reason that we were in Germany was because my dad was in the army.

My mom has given blood for years and now she can't.

It's so stupid.

O_O Huh? Is the US government so pissed off at Germany now that you won't even take Germany-contaminated blood? Should I be worried because I live in Germany? *is confused*

It's not just Germany. It's all of Europe.

"The latest restriction is having lived overseas or traveled there since 1980. These restrictions recently went into force to protect the blood supply from the human version of Mad Cow Disease, the vCreutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. (Read about "Mad Cow Disease" "Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease") Persons who have spent long periods of time in countries where Mad Cow Disease is found are not eligible to donate. You may not donate if you have stayed more than 3 months total in countries on list 1, or more than 6 months total in countries on list 2, since 1980.
List 1: England, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Northern Ireland, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar
List 2: All of the countries in Europe, Oman."

True, it's a pain. But I get why they have to do it. You have to be *so* careful with the blood supply because it's all based on people's good will. It's hard enough to get people to give in the first place. If they think there's anything unsafe about it for a second, they just won't bother. And you'd also end up freaking out the people who receive blood, which they also have to be super careful about. So yeah, I agree, the rule sucks. But I can understand why the Red Cross would do it.

I guess I do too. It's just... my mom has been giving blood for years and now she can't.
