Sleep? Hah! What is this?

Or, more on Angel.
"That's not a decision I can make for any of you."
That's what Angel says after Gunn almost suggests accepting the W&H offer. And then, later in the episode, that's just what Angel does. He makes the decision for them.
Yep, this is a post about people who aren't Connor and Angel. They had some pretty interesting things happen, too. They were all hit with their big desires and their reactions and reasons were all worth a look at.
Gunn: Why were people surprised by Gunn? The man sold his future for a truck. He went along with Gwen after she tried to set him up for kidnapping and lied to him. Gunn likes the toys and Wolfram and Hart is a pretty big toy. Okay, and in rewatching, that chick does kinda remind me of a cat. The chick is the cat. Gotta be. And he's probably a totem now. Yeah, 'cause when he comes out of the elevator, he's reminding me of the chick. The way he's walking. Interestingly, he directs his last comment to Wesley alone. He pretty much just ignores Fred.
Wesley: After rewatching, I definitely agree that he went along for the sake of Lilah's peace. It's interesting that both Wes and Angel sign up for the same reason: to try to give a loved one peace. It's also interesting that he's the only one that W&H seemed to have misjudged. They really thought he went for the knowledge and not for the sake of a person.
Lorne: He didn't get a lot. And he was seduced very easily. I'm hoping that we'll get more on his deal Season Five. He was first in the limo and the most easily won over. Although, I thought the line: "Balance is important." was telling.
Fred: Science-geek Fred! Interestingly, she seemed to be the only one not firm on the decision to join W&H at the end, before Angel told them that he'd signed them all up. She was concerned at the beginning and concerned at the end. They didn't find her 'impossible to resist' thing. And I'm amused by the fact that she snuck out. Didn't want anyone to know that she was checking it out. I love that she chooses the big-ass gun. Knox is very endearing, I must say.
Interesting thing for me: Gunn is in blue and Wesley is in red (for love, the reason he went?). Fred's in red, too, though it's covered up with the jacket. Angel, of course, wears black. Lorne's in violet over pink, which I will not try to analyze. It is interesting that from the back, they're all in different, distinct colors: black, blue, violet, red, and brown. All different, because they're soon to be separated. And yet all of them are also wearing black (except for Lorne), which connects them in choosing W&H perhaps? Wesley ends up spending some time with Lilah, who shows up in a shade of red/purple. And he does the 'oh, did we bump into each other' thing with Fred, who's wearing red under her brown. Again, all five of the W&H people are dressed very differently. All of them have very different looks as well.
More on Connor:
Because I can't say enough about him
Did he organize the hostage situation in hopes that it would bring Angel to find him? Connor isn't found unless he wants to be found. Connor's also wearing a red shirt. Interestingly, where last episode, Connor echoed Spike's "Can we rest?", this episode, he echoes Buffy by telling Angel not to say he's sorry (Buffy did that with Faith and Spike). And, god, he is so terribly lost. And yep, Angel only punches him because Connor's reaching for the detonator thing-y. And then, Connor fights back and it becomes a great big fight.
What he said that just broke my heart:
"There's only one thing that ever changes anything, and that's death. Everything else is just a lie. You can't be saved by a lie. You can't be saved at all."
And that's when he reaches for the detonator.
One of the things that so scary and sad is that Connor speaks in absolutes. It's not even that he can't be saved. It's a general you. He doesn't think that anyone can be saved.
And then:
Angel: "I really do love you, Connor."
Connor: "So what are you going to do about it?"
Angel: "Prove it."
And that would be where the hysterical sobbing started in the first-run through. I was begging the tv that Connor couldn't be dead. Just saying over and over, "Please don't let him be dead."
Then we cut to the screen of white and Lorne is singing the ultimate song about hope... that we all know ends in bloody death for the singer (Something's Coming). Just saying. If there is a fifth season, will they able to stay away from the possibilities of Connor and Angel?
And this episode is just full of allusions to the first episode of the season and the entire arc. It's all been about family (love), and choices (free will). Angel gives Connor one of them straight, with a bit of fudging on the other.
And I adored the last two shots. From inside the house we see Angel, walking away from his son. Then, from an outside shot, we see Connor laughing with his family, the camera pulling back as the screen fades to black, letting us see just Connor framed in the window before it all goes black.

Date: 2003-05-08 11:01 am (UTC)That's one of the things that has my mind reeling, working overtime. I thought for sure that when Fred practically creamed herself walking into the lab that she was sold, yet she snuck away and was still extremely hesitant about joining. And she was the last one of the entire gang to decide to go to the limo (sure, she was the first one we saw to go down, but everyone else was already down there). What happened in the science lab that broke their hold over Fred? It also makes me happy because this (along with her plot in "Magic Bullet") just goes to prove how much of a champion Fred actually is, and how far she's grown since we first met her.
