Prophecy Girl?

One of the reasons that I adore Buffy is because she keeps breaking the rules.
I'm like Buffy in that I want the choice. I don't want a fixed destiny.
Which is probably why the big 'Meant to Be' loves annoy me. I dislike the idea that this one person is destined to be with this other person. I actually love what Buffy did with that: she had her Forever love, it's never going to go away, but she's not going to live her life for it. And just because she loved Angel so much, that doesn't mean that she's incapable of loving someone else. And she might end up with Angel in the end, but then again, if she doesn't, she won't be doomed to be miserable.
I dislike it when a show tells you who is going to be the Couple in the first episode and then never wavers. Which is why the John/Aeryn relationship on Farscape doesn't appeal to me. The second that they were introduced, it was fairly obvious that they were the big sexual tension.
Mostly, I don't want the romance to be the story. Princess Mononoke was a good movie, but I didn't feel the love story added anything. Ditto my recent viewing of The Italian Job. It seems like there's always a romance and there doesn't always need to be one. It would just be nice to watch a movie where there isn't the customary happy couple at the end. You don't need to be with someone to be happy.
Apparently I should have named this 'Issues Girl'.

Date: 2003-06-19 07:47 am (UTC)I find that I'm searching for reasons *not* to like John/Aeryn. Does every show have to have romance?
