First, a side point.
There's one sentence that, I think, sums up what Buffy the Vampire Slayer has to say about life's turning points: "You don't have a good choice, but you have a choice." (Lie to Me)
And onto something that I've been thinking about recently...
"I'm behaving unreasonably because I've lost all reason."
He's not repeating himself, he's shifting word meaning. "I'm behaving irrationally because I've lost my purpose for caring." He's lost his reason, because his reason was Fred. She was 'someone who represents even a part of what [I] think makes the world worth fighting for'. She's his Dawn, his Connor, his River, his Tara, his Buffy. So many different ways to say 'everything'. In each of these cases, we see the same type of relationship -- no sacrifice is too great and losing that person is unacceptable, even if the only way to prevent it is one's own death.
For Buffy, everything in the world became wrapped up in her sister who was herself. If the world asked her to let Dawn die, to let Dawn suffer, then the world could go fuck itself. "Everything I have is right here."
Angel's existence finally made sense when he held his son in his arms. For his son, he could fight any battle, wage any war, even if none of it meant Connor would love him back. For Connor, he would let his friends be mentally violated by Wolfram and Hart, even if he himself could not reap the benefits of Connor's change of reality/mind. "I save you every night."
Simon would have given up anything to get his sister back. He threw away his entire life's plan to get her and keep her safe. And if he couldn't save her, then he planned to die by her side. "The last thing she'll see is me protecting her."
Willow's life changed when she met Tara. It's been forever changed by her experiences with Tara. She may have lost Oz, but she got him back, was able to say good-bye. She's never been allowed to truly say good-bye to Tara. "I've loved you since I've known you."
Like Willow with Tara, Spike's entire life shifted when he met Buffy. His entire world was turned upside down by the Slayer with friends and family. She made him want to grow up, to be a person. She gave him a reason to become good. "I want to give you everything. I want to take back the mistakes, help you start over."
For Wesley, that person who makes the world make sense was Fred. "She was with me. We should have been forever, and I -- I let her be dead."
Six relationships wherein one party is everything to another. Three are familial, three are romantic. All six are incredibly intense and very different relationships. Yet, for any relationship, you can switch around the quotations and they'll still fit.
