One theme in the relationships that I ship is a certain volatility. This is probably part of why F/K appeals to me more than F/V -- Fraser and Vecchio's relationship was less extreme, less physical, less of a mixing and more of a compromise.
What Ray Kowalski wants from Fraser is pretty clear-cut -- trust and sharing. He wants to know Fraser instinctively, without words being needed. Which leads right into another thing that I enjoy in my 'ships -- understanding the other person's inner nature. A pair of people who appear to be dissimilar but are quite alike under the skin. Occasionally, I 'ship the opposite -- people who appear alike, but are actually very different. Those people, though, I don't dream of ending happily. One example of the latter type would be Wes/Fred, which appears to be a meeting of minds, but is actually closer to the coming together of opposites (example -- Fred is all about survival, Wes considers his survival one of the least important factors of any given plan).
I like appearance that contrasts substance. I like couples that can yell at each other and then get over things. Part of why I 'ship Buffy/Xander over Xander/Willow is because Willow's MO in relationships (hide! ignore! repress!) is not one that I enjoy.
I like a couple who can be mad each other in one moment, but then turn as one unit the second outside danger arrives. Closing ranks. People who will argue but who ultimately do respect each other. Who do understand each other, even when they're fighting.
