"So, you shot me," Daniel said, his voice almost casual. I couldn't actually tell if the undercurrent was anger or something more interesting. Knowing Daniel Jackson was a little like knowing a minefield -- no matter how well you'd memorized the terrain, you could still lose your leg if you weren't careful.
"Carter zatted you. You aren't complaining about that." I said, leaning on the wall next to him and sneaking a look at his computer screen. He was working on a report. Damn, Daniel could act boring sometimes. Just as well that I knew it was all a cover.
"No..." Daniel said, pulling on the word like taffy. "Sam didn't zat me. That was Anubis."
He still hadn't looked at me. "Should you be doing that?"
He finally glanced over at me, the lines between his eyes deepening. "Doing what?"
"That." I said, waving a hand at the computer. "You were shot, as you enjoy pointing out."
"My hand's still in the sling. It's fine." Daniel told me, turning to stare at the report. Oddly, I doubted that the new doctor would agree that typing was fine as long as his arm stayed in the sling. Call it an intuition. Freak mental telepathy. Huh. Was it redundant to say 'mental telepathy'?
"Doesn't that hurt?" I asked, reaching forward to pick up a doo-dad from Daniel's desk. His shoulders tensed for a second, but he didn't say anything. "It looked like it hurt. At the time."
"It's fine," he said, obviously going for 'absent professor' but landing squarely in 'annoyed at Jack'. Good. I turned over the artifact, kinda recognizing it from a previous mission. Something Daniel'd thought was interesting, found out wasn't, and then kept because he'd thought it was pretty.
Most of the stuff in here was like that, after a while.
"Need any help?"
"With the report?" Daniel asked. He hadn't actually typed anything since I'd gotten there, another tiny victory. And intentional denseness was always a good sign.
"Who cares about the report?" I said carelessly, hiding my smile at how that put his back up.
"You!" He snorted, pushing away from the desk and turning his full attention to me, where it belonged. "At least in theory. Jack? Could you pretend to be a General? At least a little."
"Right, then, I order you to-"
"Wa-wait. I didn't say anything about orders," Daniel protested, standing up. "I... oh. I get it."
"You do?" I asked, not getting my hopes up.
"Maybe." He paused, his forehead scrunching up in suspicion. I gave him my best innocent look and he bit his lip before shifting gears. "Okay... since you won't let me get my report done, you should treat me to dinner." And I hadn't needed to say a word. Sometimes the man could pick up a hint.
"Well, if you insist. All the stuff at your place is probably rotten by now anyway." I said. He gave me an amused look and grabbed his coat off the back of his chair, leaning down to save his report before shutting down the computer.
"Your place, then?" he asked, heading for the door. "Did you want to call for pizza or stop at a store on the way?"
"Your call," I said, putting down the doo-dad. "I did shoot you, after all."
Daniel grinned at me and flicked off the light. "You did."
He left the room and I followed him, closing the door behind myself and keeping a close eye on his six.
Someone had to.

Date: 2004-07-26 09:53 pm (UTC)Good voices, and I love peeved!Daniel. Especially his "Jack? Could you pretend to be a General? At least a little." which was fabulous. I'm so very jealous that we don't get S8 in Canada... But at least we get fic! Thanks for this one!
I love a Daniel's who's a bit annoyed at Jack. I love their friendship, especially in this new season, because they've been through just about everything a pair of friends can be through and they came through it stronger and closer. Even the rough edges are coated with affection.
Also, I love your icon. I find Buffyverse quotes apply wonderfully to many other fandoms. It's like a mini-crossover.
Again, thank you. The second that I saw Daniel and realized a bit about his arc, I thought that that quote would fit him so perfectly. I just needed to find the right images.

Date: 2004-07-26 06:49 pm (UTC)Ooooh, I just love when Jack is so sly. Especially when he outsmarts Daniel like this. This is really wonderful--such a terrific Jack-voice! He knows Daniel so well, and the affection really comes through.
Of course he's watching Daniel's six. (I chose to interpret that in a very non-genfic way.*g*)

That's really what I love about them so much. They have this deep connection and they know each other so well, so they can annoy and frustrate each other and still know that that love isn't going anywhere. They have such trust in each other. And Jack's a great character. He's very much about showing his care as opposed to talking about it. I like that his idea of sappy deathbed talk was to call Daniel a pain in the ass and say that he might have admired him a little, all the while showing his deep respect and love for Daniel by doing everything he can to salvage at least Daniel's reputation.

Heh, well, yes. I'm working my way up to slash.

...because be careful what you wish for, Daniel. You should know that by now.

And this was beautiful and hilarious and depicts just how deceivingly dangerous Daniel can be.
Loved the whole thing. Great job!

This was so damn funny. Jack has annoying people--especially Daniel--down to an art form.
He really does. Jack's sheer... Jackness is wonderful to watch onscreen.

I love Daniel so much. Yes. You have no idea how hard it is to refrain from doing the badfic thing and having a character gush over him. Because yes, he's beautiful and stubborn and brilliant and probably annoying as hell to actually talk to if you aren't as smart as he is, and I adore him for all that.
Loved the whole thing. Great job!
Again, thank you very much. I really love Stargate so far and I'm thrilled that my vision of the characters feels real.

Date: 2004-08-03 09:20 pm (UTC)Watching Jack onscreen is sheer joy. I remember how shocked I was at first by Richard Jean Anderson's portrayal of O'Neill, when before I'd only been familiar (vaguely) with the movie version O'Neill, played by Kurt Russell. But it was a good shock.
I'm also a very, very big supporter of Daniel. *g* he's beautiful and stubborn and brilliant and probably annoying as hell to actually talk to if you aren't as smart as he is, and I adore him for all that. That about sums it up.
I'm a recent convert to Stargate, so I've been catching up on episodes from past seasons that Sci-Fi Channel airs throughout the week, and it's been so much fun reading all the fic, too. I'm pretty particular on how I see the Stargate characters--perhaps even moreso than other shows/fandoms I love--and your view of them really works for me.

Date: 2004-08-04 09:03 pm (UTC)Jack's a fun, fun character. I can't wait to see more General Jack. Because. Fun.
I'm also a very, very big supporter of Daniel.
Yeah, Daniel's... he's smart, snarky, and he tries really hard to do the right thing. Most of the characters that I love most tend to share those qualities. Intelligence, wit, and determination are way sexy. As well as a certain off-kilter way of viewing the world.

Yeah, me, too. And once I started watching, I was all, "If only I'd known the greatness!" Though honestly, I'm glad that I wasn't watching when Season Five and Six first aired. Because now, watching Meredian and Season Six is fine because it's part of Daniel's journey. If I'd thought that Meredian was the end of the road for him, I probably would have freaked. I stopped watching Angel for quite a while after Doyle died. I know that I would have hated Jonas Quinn if I'd been watching SG-1 in real time. But because I know that Daniel comes back, I have no issues. Which is nice, because Corin (I think that's his name) is way cute and I really like Jonas.

Date: 2004-08-05 03:20 am (UTC)I agree. Gen. Jack is a lot of fun. (In tv reality) The world is a safer place. At least from alien parasitic snakes and other hostile non-terran races. I really warmed to Jack's character because he's a nice alternative to my own experience with the Air Force point of view, speaking as an Air Force brat myself.
Daniel. ::cue sigh:: Intelligence is such a huge turn-on. Even better when it's filtered through snarkiness. I thoroughly enjoy the moments when he delivers a shot of vicious sarcasm to the truly deserving after his patience has been shot. And his heart is so big, he has this huge capacity for compassion. And it drives Jack nuts, because even when he argues the opposite point of view, he's forced to listen to Daniel's side, which is usually the harder way to do things. But the reason Jack's "forced" to consider Daniel's side of the argument is because he can't deny that it's a valid one. I love when those two have those types of really intense arguments. I'm glued to the screen.
Oh yeah. I hear you on the sexy determination. It's his intense drive motivated by an honest intent to serve the greater good. As well as a certain off-kilter way of viewing the world. Without a doubt, this is the number one quality that will draw me to a character.
And once I started watching, I was all, "If only I'd known the greatness!"
I know! It's only been about several months for me, and I've been kicking myself. The two episodes I actually devoted my full attention to for the first time and finally gave the show a shot were the Groundhog Day-ish one (Window of Opportunity?) and the one with Teal'c's first appearance. Watching Jack and Teal'c follow Daniel's suggestion of taking advantage of the time loop to go nuts; and Teal'c popping down the snake's hood helmet as he greeted Jack face-to-face for the first time, respectively. Those moments really clinched it for me. I was hooked. I couldn't believe I had been missing out on this great show for so many years. I'm just glad I discovered it while it was still running and had a chance to talk to other fans about it.
But the other side of the coin, is the one you mentioned. If I'd thought there was any chance of Daniel dying--for good--and never coming back I would've been seriously upset. It's so cool watching those old episodes, because I can relax with the peace of mind that it's all going to be okay when Friday rolls around with new episodes in which Daniel is alright. I would've probably despised Jonas, but I'm glad I don't have any baggage about that character and can enjoy him for himself and not as an unwelcome replacement. Theoretically. I haven't seen a full Jonas episode yet. But I liked that actor back from the Parker Lewis Can't Lose days. (Don't know if you ever saw that show.)

Date: 2004-08-05 05:04 pm (UTC)Yeah, my Air Force experience is pretty much limited to Stargate. My dad was in the Army, which doesn't count. Well, he said that, so.
I love when those two have those types of really intense arguments. I'm glued to the screen.
My favorite friendships always seem to be the ones that can have straight-up, passionate fighting (other examples -- Buffy/Xander, Fraser/RayK, even Clark/Lex). It's the strength of the emotions that are brought to the table, the fact that they care so damn much.
But I liked that actor back from the Parker Lewis Can't Lose days. (Don't know if you ever saw that show.)
Haven't, but I do quite like Jonas Quinn (I've seen seven episodes with him). The actor is really good in Shadowplay (the episode after Abyss, Daniel's first sixth season appearance).

Date: 2004-08-06 10:06 pm (UTC)Heh, yeah, the different branches of the military make it a point to maintain that they shouldn't all just be looped in with each other in one group. I've heard all the mottos and jokes from my father.
Buffy-and-Xander's friendship drives me nuts. There are times when I have truly despised Xander, but then there are the times when he seems to be the only one Buffy can depend on. Clark and Lex fascinate me whenever they're in a room together. Passionate sure is the word. *g* It's been so long since I've seen Due South (when it was actually still running) that I only really know how Fraser and RayK interact from the good DS fanfic I've read. I just know I'd be more into the fandom if it was currently syndicated, and I could watch it again. The more characters have invested emotionally in each other the more interesting things get. The higher the drama quotient, too. I relate to passionate characters with very intense emotions which is why I like to watch them so much.
I'll be on the lookout for Jonas reruns. I'm bound to catch 'em eventually, since Sci-Fi shows Stargate so many times throughout the week.

Date: 2004-08-07 04:09 am (UTC)And all his behavior towards her springs from a very honest (and frustrating) place -- she is his hero. He vocalizes this in season four, but it's always true. He'll always be her most faithful friend, but he also expects more from her than anyone else.

But yeah, for the principal and for Anya and the Potentials, it was about showing Buffy out, ganging up against her. Not for Xander, Willow, and Dawn, though.
