butterfly: (Who We Are - Daniel (by destina))

Different subject -- our official roommate count for VividCon is up to three now. Which means paying 1/3 instead of 1/2 for the rooms. That's always nice. And I'm really looking forward to it. There were a healthy number of Stargate vids on the dvds for last year's con, so there'll be some this year, I bet. And since I actually watch the show now, then that'll be many more vids that I'll understand on first viewing. Yay!

Okay, what's up with the credits? As in, there are credits in first season, but not in fifth. Is this just my dvd set or are there no fifth season credits? Also, people, this is what happens when I can't sleep.

Not to knock her, but Sam has sucky taste in men.

Also, what's wrong with shooting him in the leg? Or shoulder? Or someplace non-lethal? Shooting to kill was not your only option, Sam.

Daniel rocks the bandana look. Mmm. He's highly adorable. As I said to my mom, Benton Fraser's still more beautiful, but Daniel is definitely cuter.

So, I figured out part of what I love about Daniel and Jack -- it's kinda like Wesley and Angel, only not actually totally fucked before it even starts.

I think that Dr. Fraiser looks prettier in Season Five. Though she is very pretty in S1.

That Chosen chick who married Jack is also very pretty.

Old Jack's mean. He made her cry. Bad Old Jack.

I adore these people's clothes. Flowy and in very nice colors.

Oh, and I do enjoy the message of this episode. Use well the days.

Okay, this episode was written by Jeff King. Would that be the same Jeff King that's done... um. Something. In Buffyverse. Can't remember what. But it's something.

Ooo. A 'find out about Jack' episode. Cool.

Hee. Crystal!Jack is amusing. "I think you just did." He's so... tabula rasa.

Charlie was a really cute kid.

Interesting episode, no doubt.

Aw... Daniel's so cute in myth-mode. And Jack's cute translating him

Ooo. We meet the grey guy in this episode. Cool.

Daniel really does have a hair-trigger when it comes to the Gou'uld and their things. Makes sense, considering.

"So in a couple hundred years, we'll be free." I love Jack.

Oh, I love Daniel and his love for Sha're. So sweet.

Ouch. Ouch. That Jack gives it to Daniel to do. That's a big ouch. He didn't have to do that.

Aw... no grey guy. Too bad. I liked him. When do we meet 'Thor'?

So, it seems to me that Daniel's ascension is what Cordy's appeared to be on first glance.

Daniel gets the non-ME'd version of ascension, wherein it isn't all a trick. And yet, he still finds that it doesn't suit him. Now, in Season Five, I just recently watched Red Sky and at the end of it, said to myself re: Daniel -- "Wow, that's a man looking for religion." So far, he's seems vastly disillusioned in S5, yet, despite that, he wants to believe. This may be why he embraced what Oma offered, because he was looking for something to believe in.

If Daniel's story had ended there, it would have been saying something entirely different than what we ended up getting.

Of course, it seems that there were hints all along that that couldn't be the end -- Orlin's a big one. There are, I believe, three Daniel episodes in Season Six. In the first two, he appears for his friends in times of need, perhaps simply to reassure them that he's still there for them. On the other hand, it sounds like there was a huge hint in Abyss that Daniel did interfere by helping Teal'c 'realize' where Jack was. In Full Circle, he flat-out breaks the rules, choosing trying to help his people over the guidelines that Oma set. She pulls him off of Abydos, possibly (I'm unsure of this point) descending him.

Much as people speculated at the time that Cordy might have gotten kicked out because she interfered when Angel's destiny and life were at stake.

You have no idea.

Second season. He doesn't develop the crush on Jack until S3, though.

Well, that and he didn't want to die, but yes. Absolutely. He gets religion in Meridian, and when you first see him in Abyss he's filled up with it--he's so happy doing what he's doing, he can't imagine doing anything else, he's committed to the rules he has to follow. He might have helped Teal'c come up with the solution to the how-to-rescue-Jack problem, but it's unclear, and he strongly denies it when Jack asks.

Then we get Changeling, where he seems less happy, more homesick (Daniel to human-Teal'c, a little wistfully: "Self-preservation is a powerful instinct.") and Full Circle, where he gives up completely on the rules, partly at Jack's urging.

We never get a real answer as to whether he was kicked out or chose to leave. The characters all assume kicked out. MS has said in interviews that the backstory he discussed with the writers was that there would've been some sort of a trial thing and Daniel chose to come back. *shrug* So you can interpret it however you want, at this point.

I've seen this guy and Orlin, her Nic Cage-eske stalker from the upper realms. How much worse does it get?

Second season. He doesn't develop the crush on Jack until S3, though.

Cool. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

Not wanting to die certainly seems to be one of Daniel's big themes. He's a 'life, hope' guy.

The reason that I fall on the 'helping' side is literary tradition. I've read about the episode and I checked out the transcript. Daniel leaves Jack, Teal'c gets an idea during meditation about where Jack is, Daniel shows back up to see Jack -- in literary tradition, that's a clear indication that Daniel did something to help Teal'c. Especially since we seem to get no on-screen reason for Daniel leaving. Makes sense that he'd deny it -- he has plausible deniability and he'd be foolish to admit that he interfered.

I really want to see the episode, though. Because, wow, tone and facial expressions mean so much. Is Daniel really so enamored of Oma's way in Abyss or is he trying to convince himself that this is the best way, that with all his power, it's still better not to help Jack? There's absolutely no way for me to form a true personal opinion based on transcripts.

I recently saw a clip of the elevator scene from Full Circle and it has such a completely different vibe from transcripts alone (this would be, in part, because wow, Michael and Richard had kick-ass chemistry and play off each other extremely well).

Then we get Changeling, where he seems less happy, more homesick (Daniel to human-Teal'c, a little wistfully: "Self-preservation is a powerful instinct.") and Full Circle, where he gives up completely on the rules, partly at Jack's urging.

Ooo. There, he may be admitting to himself that a huge part of the reason he moved on was to live. No, not just to live, because it's possible that Jacob could have healed him, but he probably wouldn't have ever been whole again, yes? He wanted to perserve his self, not his body.

And it makes sense that he'd completely throw the rules out for Abydos. Those are his people (who are now beyond his reach... ouch).

We never get a real answer as to whether he was kicked out or chose to leave. The characters all assume kicked out. Neat. I like that. Until it's said on-screen, it's open, and possibilities are fun.

It's not so much that it gets worse as that she's got a real pattern going with sweet-but-stalkery guys, and she keeps letting them mind-meld with her. The woman needs to get some boundaries, stat.

Yeah, you should totally see it. My interpretation is that he's serious at the beginning, and changes his mind somewhat over the course of the episode, but Interpretations Will Differ.

Right. To be fair, he's talking to Teal'c about Teal'c's situation, but I can't help but see that as a comment on Meridian as well.

Damn, yes. Then again, her dad is now Tok'ra, so maybe boundaries aren't a family thing.

>When do we meet 'Thor'?<

Daniel and Sam meet him in Thor's Chariot, and I'm not sure when Jack gets to meet him.

Thanks. Sounds like the whole Thor arc is a long time coming. It's cool, I can be patient.

Hi.

This is the roomie.

Just wanted to make sure you got my email... which apparently you did. Duh.

Was talking to Juls. Wondering how things were gonna work... Wanted to figure out when people were getting there (I'm driving) etc.

Are you just putting my name on the room? So I can just check in when I get there and we can all meet in the room?

Sorry, Occassionally an anal retentive list maker. But this is stop number 6 of about 8. So I wanted to get things settled.

email me?

Hey!

Just wanted to make sure you got my email... which apparently you did. Duh.

I actually replied, but maybe it didn't go through? Hotmail can be annoying at times.

Actually, the whole 'putting names on the room' thing is a good idea. I was planning on calling sometime soon to double-check the reservations anyway, so I could do that for y'all at the same time.

I think that I just have your first name.

I'm so thrilled about this whole going to another city and meeting people who enjoy the same things I do. The sheer number of people going! The idea of seeing vids with a whole bunch of other people! Did I mention the other people who also enjoy fandom thing? And I get to room with the creator of one of my favoritest vids in any fandom.

My email went fritzy for a little while too, so I'm not surprised I'm still catching up on the bits that fell through the cracks.

Ok.

One last question/favor. How much would it cost to extend to hotel room another night? I have a 13 - 15 hour drive ahead of me and I really need to sleep before something like that. I'll pay completely for that last night. In fact. I'll pay for the whole thing and you guys can just pay me your portions. Just to make it easier. (I'll need the cash by that point anyway)

If its under.. say $120, can you just extend it and let me know that you have? Thank you so much.

-Rachel
