So, apparently Daniel (Oh! So pretty and smart and with glasses!) leaves the show for a while (Noooo!). When does this happen and how long does it last? I'm just, just starting first season here, but I'd like to be prepared.
Also, why is there a need to announce lack of guilt in loving Daniel? Is there a faction that feels as though people should feel guilty?
Is there some sort of comprehensive fandom guide hovering around somewhere where they explain these things or do I need to piece it together the way I did the Ray Ways in dS?
And if I asked really nicely, would someone make me a Daniel-type icon?

Date: 2004-06-10 02:51 am (UTC)There is a significant segment of fandom devoted to worshipping, infantilizing, feminizing and/or sainting Daniel. You'll run across them sooner or later if you're in fandom any length of time, and you can see this in much of the fiction. It's annoying in the extreme. So Daniel-worshipping fans are greeted with suspicion until they are understood to be in the 'not rabid' category.
Comprehensive fandom guides...no. I keep up the fanon vs. canon primer, which is useful in sorting out certain things.

For total show information, Arduinna's Handbook is a fabulous resource.

Otherwise, you'll mostly have to ask questions, I think. There's always someone around to answer. *g*
As for the icon, I'll be back shortly with a couple for you.
And now to do first things second.
Date: 2004-06-10 05:35 am (UTC)Very good to know. So, I don't have to worry about him leaving any time soon for me. And then he's only gone for most of a season?

Ah, yes. Worship can get boring and/or annoying. Though I can understand why he has rabid fans. I've only known him for three episodes and I adore him.
Thank you so much for the links.

Date: 2004-06-10 03:50 am (UTC)Destina pretty much covered it. I also think (though I came into the fandom when this had all mostly died down) that there are a lot of lingering issues from the year that MS took off--there was a big campaign to try to get his character back, hurt feelings, fandom-wide bloodshed, etc. etc.
It's somewhat like being a Spike fan, actually--the ritualized "but not in a crazy way, you understand" thing.

*blinks innocently*
There are non-crazy Spike fans? Gosh.

Date: 2004-06-10 07:00 am (UTC)Sadly for the power of fannishness, it's my belief that the reason MS came back is primarily because they knew RDA's shooting schedule was going to have to be drastically reduced in S7 (don't cry, it's still a good season) and they needed a character they could bank on to bring in the fans, as well as Sam and Teal'c.
Anyway, yeah - it seems everyone was ecstatic about MS's return, but people still qualify it with 'not like I'm one of those rabid SDJers or anything'. The SDJ site also has a rather higher proportion of out-and-proud slasher articles than I think is a good idea for appealing to the PTB.
St. Daniel is a huge thing in fanon. *shudders* As well as Everyone Is Horrible To Daniel And Doesn't Appreciate His Brilliance.
...wait a minute, why have I *never* seen a "That Daniel - He's like Jesus, in a way" icon? That catchphrase was made for him.

Date: 2004-06-10 07:10 am (UTC)It really does seem like every fandom has at least one group that the rest hides from in sheer embarrassment (so the SDJ people are a bit like the people who showed the naked Merry/Pippin picture to Boyd and Monahan?).

And he... ascends or something, yes? That probably complicates the issue further. And it's odd for me, because in the Buffyverse, ascending always ends up being something bad.

Date: 2004-06-10 07:20 am (UTC)(Funny thing, Daniel's three appearances in S6 could be described quite slashily, if one's into the whole misogynist slasher thing:
Abyss: J/D slash extraordinaire.
The Changeling: Quite Daniel/Teal'c-y.
Full Circle: Daniel acts like a complete twat to Sam.)
MS, at least, has definitely been asked to sign J/D photomanips. He's done it though he says they squick him. The Lotr boys seem much more comfortable with the slash thing. (And hey, after Elijah was on Graham Norton and Graham got out those F/S naked photomanips and got the cameraman to do a closeup, what more can happen?)

Date: 2004-06-10 09:10 am (UTC)As far as sites go, stargatefan (http://www.stargatefan.com) is usually my first stop. They've got screengrabs, episode synopses, transcripts, though not everything for every episode. otherplaces (http://www.otherplaces.net) is a favorite, too.
And icons?
Welcome to the fandom. ;)

But Sam and Daniel practically mind-meld in the first episode. She's totally as smart as he is.
Oh. Wait. I'm using logic, aren't I?
