Jack does a bit of hugging in Stargate, but as far as I can recall, he does the long hug plus shoulder kiss twice -- once with Daniel in The Serpent's Lair, and earlier with Sara near the end of Cold Lazarus. Can anyone remember him pulling that move with anyone else?

If not, that's an interesting thing for the show to do. It's an explicit connection between Daniel and Jack's ex-wife for Jack.

Then there's the almost metatexualness of the energy being -- its vulnerability with Sara reminds me of Jack's (much) later vulnerability with Daniel in Abyss. "Where's that Jack O'Neill military bravado?"

Again, it's just interesting.

Also, I notice that they didn't have the Not!Jack interact with Daniel in any meaningful way -- N!J talks to both Sam and Teal'c, but they don't try to have the audience buy the idea that Daniel wouldn't know the truth. These two are the two who know each other.

Cold Lazarus is an interesting episode overall, really. It features the return of 'Captain-Doctor' and has Daniel call Jack 'Colonel' twice. Odd Daniel-ness in this episode.

Hey, I found you via a friend's 'friends' page, and I just wanted to say I really liked these Stargate musings of yours. Whilst I'm not a Jack/Daniel shipper, I really love how they have this amazing bond and friendship, they're kinda like ying and yang, almost completely opposite but always together whether arguing or otherwise.

As for the Jack move, I can't think of any other eps where he does it but I'm sure he does it at some other point... quite possibly to Sam.

That's what I find so fascinating about them. Because of who they are, they challenge each other to grow and change. They're catalysts for each other.

Apparently, he does it with Sam in Heroes 2 (which I haven't seen yet). I'll definitely watch the hug carefully when I do see the episode.

Yeah, he does do it in Heroes, I remember now.

Yes!! I totally agree, they have one of the best dynamics of any two major characters on a tv show I've ever seen.

I don't know that I buy there was shoulder-kissing in Serpent's Lair, but Jack gives Sam a very similar hug-and-head-duck in Heroes 2, I think.

'Shoulder kiss' is a bit shorter than 'press his mouth against their shoulder', so I was mostly just using it as a shortcut. Though, true, there are implications from the word 'kiss'. It is pretty much exactly the same move with both Sara and Daniel, though (he also does the 'amazed face cupping' with both of them, though with Sara, it's before the hug and with Daniel, it's after).

And obviously I need to watch Heroes 2 so that I can compare.

When Jack is comforting Daniel in the storeroom in Need, he does the hug-and-head-duck thing; he nestles his face down into Daniel's shoulder.

It's such an entirely sweet thing. Total cuteness.

In the balcony scene in The Light, he puts his arm around Daniel and sort of puts his head against Daniel's shoulder - not quite the same, but similar.

And the other way wouldn't have really worked. Because. Balcony. Eeep. How Daniel's many and various brushes with death still manage to affect me is beyond me.
