butterflyJust a quick note (among many, many others, I'm sure) that tomorrow is the voting deadline for this year's elections in the US. If you are a registered United States voter, please vote tomorrow. Be heard. Be counted.
If you truly like the way the administration has been handled the past four years -- well, I'm no clue why you enjoy my journal, but that's largely irrelevant -- if you're happy with how our country has behaved, vote for Bush. If you've already planned on voting for Kerry, I'm right there with you. If you haven't made up your mind, I really would urge you to think about voting for Kerry rather than a third party.
Vote your conscience, but also consider the current limits of our system.
My dad wrote in a vote for Nader (who was disqualified from the ballot in Oregon). He doesn't trust or like politicians in general. He hates corporations. That overrides anything else he might feel. He's making his decision based on a knee-jerk emotional reaction (he's my dad, I can say that about him). So, don't be like him -- consider all your options. If, after careful consideration, you feel that voting third party, voting for your choice, is more important than voting for the guy who does stand a chance of winning against Bush, that's undeniably your right. Your vote is your voice, you should use it as you see fit. I have all the respect in the world for a choice carefully chosen.
There is no politician out there who represents all of my beliefs. Of the two that I consider in serious running for the presidency, John Kerry is so far ahead of Bush as to be in another galaxy.
"I cannot justify legislating an article of faith." John Kerry said that. This is an attitude that I like.
I voted for John Kerry.

All of the appointees come from corporate backgrounds that ought to be conflicts of interest. The whole deal is to "privatize" war, prisons, pensions...and it ain't mom-and-pop ops that'll get those contracts.

Hmmm. Do you mean that your dad is voting for Nader because Nader represents a different sort of candidate? Or is he Nadering (the way I think a lot of Nader voters may be) more as a disgusted "Fuck you!" to the other candidates?

That's exactly right, just as it's inevitable that we can't ever relax our vigilance about our government, that reform is ongoing, and that democracy never gets finished. It's not a pie, it's a process.
