I'd just like to share that [livejournal.com profile] sisabet's vid Two Words (AtS) still makes me cry. I cannot imagine loving Angel more or being more proud of him than I am in that final moment. Angel is a tragedy in many ways, but also a triumph. It lives with death in a way that Buffy doesn't, because the lead is dead the entire series run. Buffy lives with dead in the action, Angel lives with death in the being. Dead, but all too human in every way that truly mattered.

The greatest... thought behind everything that I've seen Joss Whedon write is about not giving up. About fighting those battles, even when you're sure you'll lose.

Strong is fighting. -- Buffy

If nothing that we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. -- Angel

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one. -- Malcom Reynolds

I may not comment much, but I love you, and I love the way your brain works. :-)

I can't find the vid. on her site - do you know where it is?
Not that I want to cry or anything....

Well - it isn't there cause I am a doofus who can't figure out how to update my site. I'm also a doofus who forgot to save the vid to my lj memories - but you can get it here:

And thank you so much, Butterfly - this made my day.

Thanks.

Sisabet - did you know they showed "Closer" among other vids) at the Halloween convention in London, with JM and DB on the premises?

No - I had no idea. Usually it is customary to ask vidders permission to show their work in public (I very rarely give it for cons I don't attend) and no one that I know of, contacted me from a London Con. Huh.

It'd be kind of ironic if, after trying to avoid getting into trouble for making the vids., you sued THEM for breach of copyright! I guess it just means nobody really minds, and that they liked your vids. I'd be well excited if I were you! Lots of people saw your work who never would have otherwise.

Well - I would never sue anyone at all about copyright because there is not a legal leg to stand on. What there is - however - is fan-etiquette, and right now my vids are available pretty freely. I have yet to password-protect my site and lock down my LJ or even remove my vids from internet sharing entirely and I accept that because of this - there are some risks. I also have allowed distribution of my vids on the WOAD discs, the Slayage discs and Vividcon and Escapade discs - so I also accept that there is some risk in that.

I do not send my vids to cons where I know for a fact that there will be anyone associated with the show because -dude- if you throw it in their face in public (like the infamous Firefly vid debacle) then the studio is forced to protect its copyright and I am looking at a cease and desist letter. This is why most vidders are paranoid and control freaks - we want to keep vidding. I know that allowing net distribution is a risk. I know that allowing DVD distribution is a risk - and I accept that this is a result of that (having a vid shown without my consent at a con. Seriously, though - I RARELY give consent to have a vid shown at a con I am not attending. I have to have a trusted friend --or several--attending and know *a lot* about the con before I will do this because I do not want to be shut down) but I am still *extremely* worried about this and think the organizers of this con - even if they meant no ill will - are jerks for just showing this without ever once contacting me. Correction - they are unthinking jerks.

I know this does not see like an appropriate response to you. I know that usually when you make something and people enjoy it then the appropriate response is gratitude. But we ask that there be no public showing of our work without our consent because we want to keep doing this. When other people blithely disregard this and think "Oh this is wonderful - I want to show this to everyone, so I will" without ever once contacting the person who made it (and I am soo very easy to find) that is not polite. And it could cause me some extreme problems in the future. Again - no legal issue against the organizers - I am pissed, not litigious.

At the very least I will probably take down my vids from the net for a while.

I WAS a bit surprised to see yours, and lots of other people's vids being shown - its awkward, isn't it, when you know the people actually IN the show, ie. JM, DB, Juliet and Amy Acker or the writers (like Jane Espenson), who were there, want to actually encourage the show to flourish outside the bounds of the official canon, and encourage such exercises, but that the studios and other money people don't realise that this is of indirect benefit to them too, and want to stamp on it.
I'm sorry if I've caused you any stress with this news... Hope you keep vidding regardless.
The con. was organised by JM Live.

Oh thanks - I am much calmer now - I think I just jumped on this earlier because I am a bit stressed about work and the weather and everything and this was just one more thing and now I feel better. Thank you for letting me know about this - and it is just a strange situation, isn't it?

Very. And yes, Christmas can be a stressful time.
I'm sure no bad will come of this... The studio would probably have to slap James Marsters'...... wrists... for allowing it to be shown at the con! That would be good publicity, I don't think.
