We had a totally full house for the premiere episodes of the season -- [livejournal.com profile] jic and myself, of course, and we also had [livejournal.com profile] vampireborg, [livejournal.com profile] rathanylakan, [livejournal.com profile] scatterglory, [livejournal.com profile] frostfire_17, and two RL friends of [livejournal.com profile] jic. It is so  much fun to watch with fen.

[livejournal.com profile] jic and I started off the evening with an episode of Boston Legal (I love Alan Shore so much!). Then [livejournal.com profile] vampireborg, [livejournal.com profile] frostfire_17, and [livejournal.com profile] scatterglory arrived in time to see a second episode with us. [livejournal.com profile] frostfire_17 is actually the person who convinced me to give Boston Legal a try.

After that, it was time to watch the 'true science' special that was on before the premieres started. [livejournal.com profile] rathanylakan arrived during that, though I was too busy laughing at the things they had Amanda Tapping (who was the host) saying to note the precise time (so over the top, man).

Then, SG-1 started ([livejournal.com profile] jic's two RL friends arrived during the teaser, to be greeted with much shushing).

After Sci-Fi Friday, we watched the premiere of Psych (which aired last Friday), as [livejournal.com profile] frostfire_17 expressed interest. Such a fun show, by the way. Very light-hearted and enjoyable. Lovely banter between the two leads.

All in all, a very enjoyable Friday night.

So, I watched the first episode of the first season of the new HBO series Rome. The show's focus is on the shift from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire, with a nearly equal emphasis on the patricians and on a pair of plebeian soldiers named Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo (the names are, incidentally, those of the two soldiers mentioned in Commentarii de Bello Gallico by the real Julius Caesar).

Great fun, as you might imagine. My favorite character is the future Caesar Augustus, who'll end up becoming the first Emperor of Rome (incorrectly referred to as 'Octavian' rather than 'Octavius' as I believe he would have been at this point in his life, but this is a minor quibble -- the young actor who plays him is fantastic... and I suppose while I'm pointing out minor quibbles, my use of 'emperor' is a touch anachronistic -- he preferred to be called princeps, meaning 'first citizen', though he did keep the title imperator).

No spoilers, just mentioning that I really enjoyed the first episode and I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the season (and I hear that a second season is coming out in 2007).
