Possession and Fear - the Hypocrisy of the Kents
Martha and Jonathan lie to keep their son. From the first day that they've had him, they've lied to keep him. They would, I think, do just about anything to keep him. If there is a choice between Clark and anything else, they would choose Clark. The only time that this has shown signs of shifting was when they thought they might have a child of their own blood.

But they'll choose their adopted son over friends, over business, and over honesty. And they'll do it without blinking. They may feel guilty later, but to the Kents, anything is worth keeping Clark. And more, after the scare over the summer, they've become even more paranoid and terrified - not just that something might take him away anymore - no, now their fear includes him choosing to leave them.
characterization spoilers for Asylum )
Lex is the beginning of Superman. Once Lex entered their lives, the Kents started to lose Clark and they know it. Lex marks the changeover, each time. He's there when Clark arrives. He's the reason Clark finds out the truth. He's the reason Clark starts to save people. And he's the reason Superman is created. It all revolves around Lex and how he shows Clark what he can be.
