Smallville thoughts
Jan. 20th, 2004 05:47 pmPossession and Fear - the Hypocrisy of the Kents
Martha and Jonathan lie to keep their son. From the first day that they've had him, they've lied to keep him. They would, I think, do just about anything to keep him. If there is a choice between Clark and anything else, they would choose Clark. The only time that this has shown signs of shifting was when they thought they might have a child of their own blood.
But they'll choose their adopted son over friends, over business, and over honesty. And they'll do it without blinking. They may feel guilty later, but to the Kents, anything is worth keeping Clark. And more, after the scare over the summer, they've become even more paranoid and terrified - not just that something might take him away anymore - no, now their fear includes him choosing to leave them.
Lana is, in the end, a small-town girl. She's never going to leave Smallville, not for a lifetime. Of course, now that Martha's seen that Clark can leave, she wants him to feel tied to Lana. Lana wouldn't leave, so if Clark were with Lana, neither would he. Before she was so scared of her son leaving, she wanted to encourage him to get over stifling crushes, but now the stakes are different.
And for Lex, Clark would leave. Lex might ask him to leave and Clark would. Clark chose Lex over his parents in Shattered. That's probably a large part of why the Kents want Clark to have nothing to do with Lex - Clark has shown that he will value his friendship with Lex over what his parents say. He's been showing that since the first time his dad told him to back off and he refused. In this one thing, he will not listen to his parents or his friends. Lex is the beginning of Clark choosing his own instincts over what he's been told.
Lex is the beginning of Superman. Once Lex entered their lives, the Kents started to lose Clark and they know it. Lex marks the changeover, each time. He's there when Clark arrives. He's the reason Clark finds out the truth. He's the reason Clark starts to save people. And he's the reason Superman is created. It all revolves around Lex and how he shows Clark what he can be.

Totally. Even when they were kids, Clark reached out to Lex. Remember in Lineage when Wee!Clark reached out to VeryShort!Lex.

Date: 2004-01-21 02:05 am (UTC)To me, the difference between Clark and the Kents lies in the fact that when he lies again, in Asylum, it's no longer out of fear - he's lying out of love. The Kents never stop lying out of fear - fear for Clark and fear of losing Clark. Clark, on the other hand, is moving out of that reasoning and is moves to lie to protect those that he loves. And the reasons for lying do matter - they're the difference between Jonathan/Martha and Clark. The parental Kents can move past other people's pain, because they're choosing over other people's pain, while Clark is choosing while taking that pain in account. The Kents dismiss other people when it comes to Clark, and Clark doesn't. That's why he becomes Superman.

*happy sigh*
And that showed us Clark's innate character - reaching out to comfort someone in pain, not caring whether or not he should.
I love Clark.
