Vidding: Fandom, Focus

It's amazing how much feedback depends on fandom and focus. I think that I've only gotten better as a vidder in the past few months that I've been vidding. And I really do believe that If I Wrote You is currently the best vid that I've made, though I do hope to continue to improve.
Popularity-wise, Someone Else's Prayer is the vid that I still get requests to renew the link to. The fandoms are just so different. There's only one other Queer As Folk (UK) vid that I know of, while there are many more Firefly vids in existence.
Another thing to note is the focus. Someone Else's Prayer is about the popular couple of QAF, the one that everyone loves. The point of the series, in fact. If I Wrote You is a vid that is about a pairing that isn't terribly popular. Mal/Inara is often termed 'boring' or 'cliche' (I do love the underdog). There are plenty of people who just don't like the pairing at all, and there are enough vids in the FF fandom that people don't feel the need to watch every single one.
The two vids that I've gotten the least feedback for are for fandoms that are practically non-existent on lj. It really does make perfect sense.
Of course, an analysis such as this isn't going to change the way I choose what I vid. Because it's not so much a choice. Mal/Inara isn't my favorite FF pairing (Wash/Zoe, all the way). It isn't even my favorite Mal pairing (Mal/Simon! And recently, Mal/River, as well.). But when I heard the song, I could see Inara's face in my head and I knew that the song was about her and about how she feels about Mal. I knew that the 'spring that flooded all the streams' was Saffron. I could see it in my head, knew that canon had the right material for it. And I got the chance to play around with the beat, change in time with the music. It was just... delightful. Vidding is a lot of fun (it has its frustrating moments, too, but that makes the fun parts stand out more).
And... I'm not quite as insecure about vidding as I am about writing. I can watch a vid of my own and feel that it's good, and that's so hard for me to do with my writing. I can rewatch If I Wrote You and it hits me just the same way that it hits the people who are seeing it for the first time. It captures that longing that I feel in Inara, and when I watch the vid, I'm drowning in it.

uhm hello
Date: 2005-10-16 06:46 pm (UTC)You don't know me but I really adore your SW fanfic ....
but that is not the reason I am now writing you ... I just wanted to ask (since you've obviously seen Serenity) if you could tell me if someone who hasn't seen Firefly at all can still understand the movie.
Because I recently saw the trailer in the cinema and just fell in love with it (it's not out in Germany yet) and would really like to see it, but if I can't uderstand it , it would be a waste of money and that's something I don't really have atm ...
so sorry again for just popping into your journal but I had to ask someone and since none of my friends have seen Serenity I just thought of you ... so sorry again and I hope you return to the SW fandom soon ^^
