First, the consent issues:

 

Hannah is pretty gross in the first Cas & Hannah scene, where she appears to be deliberately trying to play some weird kind of sexuality chicken with Cas, like she’s trying to force him into the same kind of awakening/awareness that she had when she saw him naked in 10x01. So, that’s not an awesome choice for her to make. Especially when she acts oddly smug after about believing she’s gotten him ~on the hook~. :-/ The kiss being a play to trick her vessel’s husband into believing she’d chosen to leave him is… kinda a douchey move to make, but also was clearly a game play rather than her genuinely trying to force Cas into something so that’s… idk. So that still made me frown-face at her a lot.

But, yes, it was all a catalyst for her to realize that other people – including humans, including Caroline (her vessel) – mattered and that it couldn’t be all about Hannah and her mission and her desires; that the human soul screaming inside her deserved to be counted as a person too. So, there was character development and she leaves the show (for now) as a person who understands consent and free will better than she did coming into it.

And in the other plotline, the Dean and Shailene early stuff is much better than it came across in the preview. All the women involved with the brothel/Rowena plotline were treated as people with personality and feelings and agency of their own, which was awesome.

Okay, other stuff:

“I get it. That was your story. Look, man, I got one of those, too. But those stories we tell that help us keep going… sometimes they blind us. They take us to dark places, kinda like the place where I might beat the crap out of a good man, just for the fun of it. The people who love me, they pulled me back from that edge. Cole, once you touch that darkness, it never goes away. Now, the truth is, I’m past saving. I know how my story ends. It’s at the edge of a blade or the barrel of a gun. So the question is, is that gonna be today? It gonna be that gun?”

Aaaaaaaaaaah. omg. so many things. so many feelings about this speech of Dean’s. For starters, he just acknowledged that Cas loves him. He really just did that. I mean, he already knew Sam does but he knows that Cas does, too. He knows. <3 <3 But then also the intense and incredible sadness at the rest of it. so many emotions.

Saaaam, don’t let Dean wallpaper over the cracks, bb. ALL THE SAD FACES.

Cas looking up the news on Jimmy. Cas talking about Jimmy. All the feels!

My goodness, Rowena is such a delightful antagonist. She’s ruthless, but charming. She’s manipulative but really interesting. I love her.

And, yay! Rowena is Crowley’s mom. I’m so thrilled that spec was correct.
