So, hmm. Quite a lot of that I loved. Pretty much everything involving Amara was A+, yay! and I really enjoyed the introduction of Lady Toni, who is, indeed a MoL and an antagonist. Seeing Billie again was fantastic. And… was that the first finale ever where no one died? (at least, I don’t think anyone died).

The Dean-Cas conversation in the car made me wrinkle my nose a bit and wonder what was meant by it. Flat-out having Dean tell Cas that he’s ‘a brother’ (and not ‘like’ a brother, which he’d said once before in S6, before Carver Era) made me wonder while I was watching the episode if they were ‘no homo’ing in anticipation of putting in some Dean/lady interaction in the latter parts of the episode, but that didn’t happen, so it’s just kinda left me going ‘?’ and wondering why Dabb felt the big No Homo car ride was a necessary component of the finale and if that has implications for how the Dean-Cas relationship is going to be played in the Dabb Era. The rest of the Dean & Cas stuff all felt natural to what we’d gotten in Carver Era but that sentence kinda made me wonder if Dabb plans on pulling way back on the romantic tropes in S12. I guess we’ll see.

When Amara said she was going to give Dean what he needed most, I squeaked because I had a feeling – and then we did see Mary at the end and I was incredibly excited. Mary Winchester! Among the living! That’s awesome. I’m super-excited about the potential of that plotline.

I hope Cas is okay and not too wet right now (I think last time he was banished, he ended up in an ocean, yes?).

The whole deal between Amara and Chuck, of course, was a big object lesson on How Not To Sibling, and then Dean attempted to teach them how to sibling which is… well, those who can’t do, teach, as the saying goes, I suppose. But I liked it all and it was a really nice thing for Dean to be able to save the world by diplomacy rather than fighting. I’ve maintained from the very beginning that the right way to deal with Amara was to respect her opinion and her feelings and treat her as a person rather than as an evil monster, so I feel very vindicated on this entire storyline.

from a meta I wrote after 11x01The Darkness and the Imprisoned Feminine

But even if the show does decide to go in that direction, what’s the endgame?

Trap her back into another Mark, knowing that will corrupt another person? And who will they ask to take that burden on – it looks like Dean is assuming that he’d take the Mark back onto himself, but how in the world would he manage to get Sam to go along with that? Sam has already shown himself willing to destroy the world and get their friends killed to free Dean of the Mark. If Dean took the Mark back on, why would I believe that Sam would just accept that and not be willing to lie and kill to get it back off again?

Attempt to find a way to kill her – one that God either couldn’t or didn’t find? Possibly, though neither of the boys has yet thought of that as something that can be done. It seems like this would just be a re-tread of the S6 Eve arc, though.

Amara/the Darkness is obviously both dangerous and powerful. But it’s possible that instead of fighting with her, they should try to do what it seems like God may never have done – perhaps they should negotiate with her. Talk to her. Find out what she really wants and if maybe there’s a way she can get it without hurting or killing people. They could try treating her like a person instead of like a monster.

And that’s essentially the call that Dean made at the end, the call that actually worked. Yay!
