Once Upon A Time 2x01: Broken

Yup, I'm all caught up. I have a few thoughts:
1. The thing with Regina is that she's supremely self-centered. Her pain matters more than anyone else's pain. If someone else gets screwed over, well, too bad for them and they should have known better (this particularly stands out in her interactions with Jefferson), but if she gets screwed over, THE WORLD MUST PAY TEN-FOLD. So, that's a thing with her. That's the thing she has to deal with if the show wants to redeem her. She has to realize that people she's not personally invested in are actually people, too, and they have feelings that are just as valid as hers (actually, Rumples has issues with this, too, sometimes -- Evil Is Selfish actually is kinda one of the themes of the show, I think).
2. Never did start disliking Mary Margaret and David. I didn't like all of their choices -- some of those were pretty horrible -- but I never stopped liking either of them.
3. As we've gone along, it's been interesting to see that fairytale land, though magical, is just as morally complex as Storybrooke. It's not at all simplified -- it's not a land of pure Good and rotten Evil. I'm glad about that, because we spend a lot of time there. And, woah, seeing what's happened to it after Regina's spell is heartbreaking, though it's good to see that it still exists!
4. I sorta find myself shipping Emma with all available options. She has chemistry with Graham; she has chemistry with Jefferson; she had (?) chemistry with August; she has chemistry with Regina of a more complex nature, too.
5. Super-excited about the set-up for this season. Wow, we have Emma, Snow, Mulan, and Aurora all in fairytale land together. How awesome is it that this show can send two of its heavy-hitting female characters off to another world and still have plenty to keep back in Storybrooke to interact with each other? I'm kinda shipping Mulan and Aurora already.
6. I'm glad that Henry and Charming are going to be able to spend some time together (and I like that Charming is back in Storybrooke with the main villains, because I've loved his interactions with them in fairytale land), though I'm sad it means no Emma/Charming interaction for a while.

Date: 2012-10-02 04:14 pm (UTC)I know, I know, so unlikely, but considering speculation that TLM is actually Hans Christian Andersen's love-letter to a man who went off and married a woman (something which left him out of water, transformed, voiceless, and feeling as if with every step he trod on knives), I would dearly, dearly love to see it on screen. And wouldn't that give a little bitter frisson to Whale's assertion that Charming is not his prince? I am resigned to disappointment in this regard. I wish for it, though.

Date: 2012-10-04 07:52 pm (UTC)Oh, ooo, they have? That was one thing that was making me sad about S1, that fairy-tales were being limited and especially that all examples of romantic 'true love' were heterosexual white couples.
and super excited by one of the fan theories about who it is/which story it relates to (even if I think we cannot possibly be that lucky). My money is on Mulan and Aurora becoming an item, but oh, how I wish that the fan speculation that Dr Whale is not, as might be more plausible, Dr Frankenstein or Monstro the Whale from Pinocchio, but rather a male version of Ariel, the little mermaid.

Oh, that is a heartbreaking thought. I think you're right that the show won't go there, but I'd love for it to happen, too.
