Avengers: my brain is stuck (I don't mind)
Jul. 2nd, 2012 01:02 pmMy vacation went really well. I have so much media to catch up on; can't watch any of it on my phone. And with my premieres vid done, I finally feel like I can watch Avengers vids. No more worry about bleed-over.
Speaking of Avengers, I have so many thoughts rolling around.
A) I still kinda desperately want a movie-verse Tony/Natasha story. I'm really thinking that I'll just have to go ahead and write myself. I love how she's almost unwillingly amused by him. And I like that they have that history of her tricking him. And I think that they'd be interesting together. I seem to be entirely alone in wanting fiction of it but that's happened before and I've gone ahead and written it anyway.
B) I still don't get Clint/Coulson as a pairing*.
C) I'm thinking of writing up meta on all the intra-Avengers interactions from the movie-verse. So, that might happen.
* related: still can't believe in Tony/Pepper as a successful long-term relationship either. It just takes a lot more for me to ship an employee/employer relationship than any other kind, I think. Personal hangups make the world go 'round.

Date: 2012-07-03 05:51 pm (UTC)I love that too - loved her quirk of a smile when Tony roared in blasting his theme music, and she was clearly worried about him when he was relocating the nuke. Not sure I buy them as anything more than friends, but I would prefer friends to what happens in a lot of fic, which is "Tony is suspicious of/afraid of Natasha in some way and thus they barely speak". Annoying.

I've been recced enough fic that's actually good that I'm OK with it, but I definitely don't ship them heavily. But then, I also like Clint/Darcy a lot, and as far as I recall, they never even met in Thor, so. :-)

Yeah, it's strange to me when I've read fics where Tony is characterized as being genuinely afraid of Natasha. I don't know if it comes from an idea maybe that a character 'like Tony' is going to be scared of a woman who can beat him up if he's not wearing the suit, but it never seems very Tony to me.
Wary to a point, yes, sure, but that's not about her lethal nature - it's because he knows that she's capable of completely fooling him and doesn't think he can trust that what she appears to be feeling is what she's actually feeling. That's what he finds irritating in IM2 once her secret is out - it's that she's a good enough actor to trick him. I mean, he knows that she's capable of beating up Happy about five seconds after their introduction; that wasn't anything that came as a surprise to him later.

Ha, truth. Clint was really just a step above a cameo in Thor.

C) You wrote it! Yay!
*) Me neither. I'm instantly distrustful of het pairings where it's a male boss/female subordinate. Jack/Sam (SG-1) and Josh/Donna (The West Wing) are good examples. Spock/Uhura in Trek Reboot was okay for me simply because their first scene together was Uhura demanding respect and Spock quickly fixing his mistake. But Tony/Pepper hit all my Do Not Wants, and the lack of chemistry only reinforced my opinion. At least Joss wrote Pepper as taking her place as Tony's equal (versus the lip service of Pepper as CEO in IM2) and that made the pairing somewhat more palatable.

Date: 2012-07-11 03:50 pm (UTC)Yeah, I sat up and went, "Oh, hello" when Natasha/Natalie was introduced in Iron Man 2. Their chemistry was just so much more powerful than the Tony/Pepper chemistry.
But I think RDJ's chemistry with everyone in the Avengers (the team) is stronger than what we've seen with Pepper. For me, though, it's partly a Paltrow vibe -- I've never gotten sexual energy from her in anything I've seen her in).

Yep, that's definitely one of my issues too. Tony may have made her CEO, but he was still treating her like she was his PA.

Date: 2012-07-11 04:12 pm (UTC)Tony making Pepper his CEO in IM2 was not a well thought-out plan. A nice sentiment, and Pepper would certainly do a fantastic job with proper support and buy-in, but you don't just randomly promote your PA to CEO! Not unless you're going to do it properly.

Date: 2012-07-11 09:13 pm (UTC)Exactly so for me, yeah.
RDJ has oodles of chemistry, though, but oddly doesn't have much with Paltrow. That almost-kiss scene in the first IM movie didn't scream "omigod UST" so much as it was... kinda awkward and weird. Even in Avengers, which benefited from Joss' writing, I didn't get a sexy vibe when Pepper whispered in Tony's ear. RDJ's expression seemed more... camp? Like, it was a clearly staged reaction, not like, "Fuck, I am so turned on right now." Compare that to all the eye-fucking going on between RDJ and Johansson in IM2!
Again, yes. Complete agreement.

Yeah, I mean, I get that he was doing it because he thought he was going to die very soon but... it was not very well thought-out. And if he had died that would have looked suspicious -- she gets promoted to CEO and then a week/month/soon time later he dies of bizarre unidentifiable heavy metal poisoning? That would not have been a fun situation for Pepper to deal with, especially since she would have been also dealing with her grief over Tony dying and her frustration/pain/anger that he hadn't ever told her that he was dying.
ETA: especially since, the second Tony's death was announced, there would be people in power making new plans on how to get control over the Iron Man machinery and plans.
