I've had the chance to rewatch and think about it some more.

I find that the rewatch made me not as mad specifically at Elena (though the last scene still makes me wonder why spending time with Stefan seems to make Elena throw her self-respect into the dirt and stomp all over it), but I found myself more frustrated with Stefan (who is just being a smug asshole who is deliberately doing his best to separate Damon and Elena from each other) and, actually, with the writing.

There were several occasions when the writing was just too much like the author was talking to me. Caroline psycho-analyzing Klaus was a big moment like that. I loved the vast majority of the Klaus/Caroline scenes, but that scene where she flat-out tells Klaus, "This is what your big issue is" just struck me as weak writing.

And then, in the scene with Esther and Finn, Esther explains to him about the spell like he is an idiot, despite the fact that he's the sib who is in the plan with her. We don't need to be reminded that the spell will link the siblings together - Esther explained that to Elena already.

Oh, and Stefan, whining about how you don't want to be the person you are? If you don't want to be that person, then don't be. The choice of whether or not to be an asshole is, actually, in your own hands. Be a grown-up and accept that. And having Elena beg him to do just that while he continues to be a whiny asshole makes them both look bad. It makes her look weak and him look... well, like a whiny asshole, as previously mentioned. But Elena is only weak around Stefan, while he's being a whiny asshole all the time.

My request for the S3 finale is that both Elena and Stefan grow up. Damon had an epiphany at the end of S2 that it was his choice to continue things on with Katherine. He loved her and he chose to act on that, chose to throw away his self-respect in order to chase after her. And he realized at the end of S2 that it was a bad choice. That was a good realization for him to have.

This issue, actually, is one of the things that makes me like Rebekah so much. When Stefan treated her similarly to how he's been treating Elena, her reaction was "screw Stefan; I'm off him until he treats me better". That's how I want Elena to feel (but, after rewatching, I remember that she's just an 18 year-old. She's a kid. She doesn't understand that Stefan's lying and asshole behavior on its own denotes a lack of respect for her; all she sees is that he 'let her make her own choices' without seeing the way that Stefan always stacked the deck with lies and manipulation so that she would choose in his favor).

So, yes. Much more in charity with my girl Elena now, which makes me happy. But I kinda want to stab Stefan in the face (...it's not like he wouldn't get better).
