I haven't had the chance to rewatch any episodes in a long time, so this is all based on what I remember. If I got something about a previous episode wrong, I'd love to know!
This episode gave me a lot to think about when it comes to the characters on the show, but particularly in the one character who made her triumphant return to the land of the living.
So, let's talk about Esther.
I have been loving the way they built up her return. We've been slowly learning things about her, good and bad. I love that Mikael ended up basically being a red herring for Esther - he wasn't a real danger to Elena the way that Esther is. Mikael didn't want Elena dead (though he was willing to kill her if necessary) - he wanted Klaus dead. Esther, meanwhile, wants to preserve the lives of her children but seems not to give a single damn about anyone else's life. And she doesn't approve of Klaus creating more hybrids.
Let's start with the beginning. Back in the day, Elijah and Klaus both fell in love with the same girl. This girl, who already had a child, seems to have broken Elijah's heart straight-up, judging by what he said to Katherine in "Klaus" about not believing that love exists. Anyway, Klaus and Elijah fight over Tatia's affections. From what Klaus said, Esther doesn't like this and blames Tatia for it. She kidnaps Tatia and uses her blood when she casts the spell that turns her children into vampires. Klaus finds out that he's a hybrid; he and his mother have a falling out, but I suspect it may be more of a one-two punch. She either killed or injured Tatia (as someone pointed out, this may also be why Elijah didn't seem as concerned about the "Klaus killed mom" news as Rebekah was, since he loved Tatia, too) as well as potentially rejecting Klaus personally.
Klaus 'kills' his mother - does he? She's not dead, obviously. And she was locked in a coffin that was sealed with a blood knot, Abby said. A blood knot requires two generations of witches, working together in order to seal it. Who sealed her in? There was Ayana, a witch in the Originals' village who wasn't Esther - her and a relative of hers, perhaps? Putting her in stasis at the same time?
Who looked after Tatia's child? That same line of witches, perhaps? Maybe that's why the Petrovas seem to have such close connections with so many witches, because a witch line has been connected with their family from the beginning. If I had time, I would rewatch the episodes talking about the power of the dead witches - who, from what we saw, are all fine with Klaus being killed (in contrast to Esther, who would rather kill the innocent girl than the killer who has lived for centuries). Also, I'm remembering that we found out a couple of episodes ago that Abby and Miranda knew that Elena was a doppelgänger back when she was a kid. The pieces are starting to form a very interesting puzzle.
This leads me to the first doppelgänger.
She was the double of Tatia, the girl that Elijah and Klaus had loved and who had been sacrificed in order to give them eternal life. Klaus saw her as a tool to get what he wanted - he does the same thing with Elena. He doesn't treat either of them like people, he treats them like possessions that he can do with what he likes (like his cold-blooded and creepy idea of breeding Elena to Matt so that the doppelgänger line can continue on).
(this reminds me of one of the items on my tvd wishlist - for someone to put all the flashbacks into chronological order)
I do suspect that Esther did not kill Tatia, at least not right away, because she probably had to use more blood later in order put the curse on Klaus (and, of course, Tatia might have been a willing accomplice of Esther's! No way of knowing at this point, actually).
Definitely looking forward to finding out about Esther in upcoming episodes!

Date: 2012-02-04 10:16 pm (UTC)Definitely he's totally willing to use her as a tool and he doesn't see her as anything close to equal. She's was still just another useful mortal to him and then a way to create his hybrids. But I do feel like there's a slight difference that I tend to chalk up to her status as The Doppleganger and a history with the original one (so, yay Tatia canon! it is my fanwank that possibly Elena actually reminds the Original brothers of Tatia more than Katherine did, but we will see).
Just, he's a bit more respectful and gentle with her than other humans. It struck me quite strongly during the ritual-cakes stuff, how he was all quasi-gentlemanly towards her (like he didn't see how even creepier that was GOD KLAUS YOU ARE SUCH A FREAK I LOVE IT). He was more patient and calm when retrieving her from the Salvatore house than I expected (I thought he'd be like HAI THAR LET ME KNOCK YOU OUT NOW AND THROW YOU OVER MY SHOULDER) and then he was kind of dismissive and matter of fact stabby towards Jenna and Jules but then with Elena he was like LET ME LEAD YOU TO THE ALTAR MY DEAR. OK U WANT TO COP AN ATTITUDE, THAT'S FAIR. THANK YOU BY THE WAY. FYI UR SACRIFICE WAS NOT IN VAIN BECAUSE U DON'T KNOW IT BUT I AM AWESOME. I WILL EMBRACE U NOW AND DRINK. And then he does that thing in 3x5 where he gets down on her level and talks soft to her after Rebekah starts shrieking, and then when she gives him back Rebekah he seems to be actually listening to her and letting her Magic Empathy Powers (Of Evil) get to him.
Basically, Klaus is super weird about Elena and would like her to be his pet doppleganger, where she is well fed and taken care of, and can play house happily with a conventionally, attractive football player and make babies and die of old age, and he will visit and play with her grandchildren AND IT WIL BE AWESOME.
Instead of, you know, keeping her in a cage and bleeding & breeding her like livestock.
Which: THANK GOD BECAUSE EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Date: 2012-02-05 07:25 am (UTC)I bet he has plaaaaaans about watching over Elena and the hybrid detail he'll assign to surveillance and her cute brunette babies and WHAT IF HE'S PICKED OUT THE COLLEGE SHE'LL GO TO. OH. MY. GOD.
(P.S. What I have realized this last week is that if they ever kill my bb Klaus then I will be completely inconsolable. It would be as bad for me as killing Alaric. I have grown terribly attached to that crazycakes chaos machine and THEY CAN'T TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME. I COULD NOT BEAR IT. I've been worrying about next week and have resigned myself to being terrified through every episode now, just waiting for the hammer to drop. noooooooooooooooooooooooooo.)

Date: 2012-02-05 07:28 am (UTC)And Elijah would be amused, because he sort of LIKES Damon (ruthlessness and loyalty).
And Stefan could go to bed without supper.
Because he's being an ass.
While Damon says 'yeah, you get used to that over a few decades. Give him time.'

Date: 2012-02-05 08:21 am (UTC)He just needs Ester to keep him in line. Klaus will be like: 'ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING CRAZY BTW' and she'll just be all NO!
I kind of... really don't know what she'll make of Damon. I think Damon would probably really like her? If she wasn't on Team Dead Elena.

Date: 2012-02-05 08:25 am (UTC)And oh, I wish we could get more information on Damon and Stefan's mother. Because, it's something that they are all lacking - a mother figure. The parents are either absent or die. And those that do show up do so badly on this show...Liz is the only one who has come around.
HMMM.

Date: 2012-02-05 03:05 pm (UTC)AliensVampires."Though Klaus can be surprisingly gentle with humans in general at times, even as he's planning on killing or hurting them. I think because, unlike Stefan - who totally gets off on causing people/humans pain in general - Klaus hurts people either out of impulse or out of a plan. I don't think we've seen him doing a lot of random hurting-for-the-sake-of-hurting. Though I could be remembering wrong. I haven't had the chance to rewatch any episodes this season.
