It is so appropriate for me that More Joy Day happens on Thursdays. The Vampire Diaries is bringing me a lot of joy these days.
1. Rebekah!
Rebekah has been such a great addition to the show. Claire Holt is a charming actress who has gotten across the complexity of the character and made her very sympathetic. I love so many things about Rebekah. I love that she's a feminist character who refuses to be treated as less worthwhile or less able because she's a woman. I love that just because she loves Stefan doesn't mean that she's going to let him treat her badly. I love her love/hate relationship with Klaus. Just adore Rebekah. She's been a wonderful addition to the show.
2. Stefan
Has Stefan not been a revelation this season? Stefan was always so hard for me to read/figure out in the early seasons, because he was constantly lying. I never really knew for sure what was up with him except that he loves his brother. This season has really put me in his corner. The revelation of how Lexi 'fixed' him just explained so many of the oddities about why he was so screwed up. He's just been pinballing back and forth between 'good' and 'bad' because he never really got to decide who he really was - he was always being driven, either by his base instincts or his fear or his guilt. We're finally getting to meet Stefan, as he finally meets himself. And it makes Stefan a wild card character, which is something that's useful for a show to have.
3. Damon & Elena
Season two was a very difficult season for Damon (and for most of the people who crossed his path). And one where he learned some valuable, if hard, lessons about love and choice. Choosing to become a monster out of love for someone is still making a choice to become a monster. Last season, Damon finally got that. He finally understood the choice that he'd made over a hundred years ago. Thus far, this season, he's been able to loosen up, make better choices, and finally start to be good to other people as a friend, as a potential love, and as a brother.
Season two was rough for Elena, too. She learned that even if the Salvatores had never ripped up her life, Katherine would have come anyway. That the supernatural danger happens because of who she is, not because of who fell in love with her. She had to bury people she loved and Stefan chose to become a monster out of love for his brother. Rough year and it hasn't gotten easier in season three. She's still dealing with the issues that were begun in S2. But she does have Damon as a rock now and he's a (perhaps surprisingly) strong support.
The development of the two of them together has been wonderful this season. Even the one episode this season that had some weird out-of-character moments (3x04 - Disturbing Behavior) got it mostly right on the Damon/Elena front. The most recent episode just slayed me. Lovely slow burn going on there.

That's such a lovely way to put it. He's always been either black or white, and has never had to temper himself to figure out the greys.
