I was, of course, predisposed to like it. I know I love Gwen and Jack; I know I love RTD's writing in general; I know that I adored Children of Earth.
And, by and large, it lived up to my expectations. It was not as sharp and biting as CoE but, on the whole, I found it very thought-provoking, with character and relationship moments that I found touching, and never boring.
And the ending is much more uplifting than CoE, which is nice. I loved the way that CoE ended but I'm glad that this one ended differently. Rex getting Jack's 'come-back-to-life' mojo is something that I never saw coming but that makes so much sense thematically.
topaz_eyes pointed out that Rex even says "I wish I'd never met you," to Jack, mirroring what Jack said to the Doctor way back in 1x13 of Doctor Who. Ha, I love that. And it makes sense in the story, too - Jack and Rex were connected via The Blessing and when they flipped the switch and Jack's was flipped back over to 'immortal', Rex got flipped, too.
I really love how open this leaves the future of humanity. I like that it continues on - the future moves forward. Always. We have Anwen and we have Esther's nieces and we have Rex.
I also found Jack/Angelo to be an incredibly powerfully-drawn relationship. Painful and beautiful.
