That last Tess/Alexander scene was really making me think of "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd (but that musical has been on my mind lately). Just... Tess obviously does have affection for Alexander, but she has loyalty to Clark. And she's willing to be ruthless in that loyalty, even when it goes against what Clark himself would choose. And that reminds me of Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd.

I flinched when she was pulling the needle up because I just knew:

a. it wouldn't work. They're not going to 'take care' of Alexander's character.

b. if it didn't work and Alexander realized what she was trying to do, it would just break what she and Clark had managed to build.

c. whether it worked or didn't, it's not any sort of way that Clark would want her to defend him.

I really enjoyed this episode. But I always love the Luthor drama (and I just learned that I have seen Paul Wesley (Stefan from Vampire Diaries) before: he was Lucas Luthor!) and this had that in spades.

It's possible that the hero stuff was too mushy for some people, I don't know, but it made me tear up. Loved having Martha back, so much.
