butterflySo, I've been thinking through Damon and Andie, trying to figure out WTF is going on there.
And I think maybe I've got it. It's all about surface gloss and things not being real.
With Elena, everything is too real. Elena is making Damon confront too many hard truths about himself and he wants to back away.
And that's Andie. No, we can't start with Andie.
First, there was Jessica. And Damon wanted to be his old self. He'd stopped hunting; stopped drinking human blood from the source. So, he went back with a bang except... he had to get drunk and work himself up to it and it wasn't like old times. He cares now (not that it does Jessica any good). It didn't work. Just like snapping Jeremy's neck didn't fix Damon's problems either (Damon - your emotional issues can't be fixed by killing people. Stop attempting to use that as a method).
So, then there's Andie. He wasn't planning on going there (he shoots her down the first time). But then he and Elena played the too-close/not-close-enough game again. Damon is, as he told Jessica, going through an existential crisis. He wants to make Elena happy and to keep her safe and alive. He feels out of control around her/because of her and he hates that as much as he loves Elena.
He tries desperately to retain control over his feelings for Elena - and he fails every time.
Because, as he told Katherine, Elena is very much worth loving. Elena is fierce and compassionate and clever and selfless. She's ten pounds of awesome in a five-pound bag.
I don't think it's a surprise that Damon chooses to use the same word to describe Andie ("Spunky") that he first used to describe Elena, way back when. If what Damon feels for Elena is far too real and painful, what he's created with Andie is deliberately artificial and he's made it even more so than it had to be, tweaked all the reality out of it.
He's given up on anything more with Elena, but can't stop himself from wanting it.
That said - Damon, stop using innocent people to work out your existential crisis!
