It's like I can't breathe without you inside of me
Wow, this is the first vid that I've made in over a year. It makes sense, though, because I haven't been hooked into media fandom again until recently. I was left a bit adrift by the end of RTD's Doctor Who and, though I do love Smallville, I don't get as fannish about it as I have many other shows (though it is the only show that I kept watching).
I think part of it is because I've been recovering from a rough time. Winter 2009/10 was tough for me. I moved out of my ex's place (which was good, because I was emotionally dying there, but it was hard because part of me wasn't ready to leave) and I was having some depression issues and trouble with school. I had latched onto Kris Allen's music and got into Kradam fandom but... I'm not good at vidding RPF stuff. Too much to deal with, canon-wise, and a lot of the source tends to be low-quality.
I asked for suggestions about what show to pick up and I'm so glad that I went with The Vampire Diaries, because I have been finding it so inspirational. I have about four or five other vid thoughts for the show. This one won out first, mostly because of "The Descent" - that episode showcased Damon's character and really made Kelly's "Addicted" feel so much like him to me. Damon falls in love like he's going to die from it (and other people will, too). This is not always pretty to watch, but I do find it interesting.
One of the things that I thought about a lot while making this vid was a Buffy quote. It's from a fifth season episode called "I Was Made to Love You":
Buffy: "Is she dangerous?"
Warren: "She's only programmed to be in love."
Buffy: "Then she's dangerous."

Date: 2011-02-09 04:38 am (UTC)Damon loves with everything in him, and not all of him is very nice. Not only that, but as you and I have discussed, Damon entered into that relationship damaged and Katherine widened the cracks and then that whole relationship collapsed.
After that all he had was what she'd taught him and all the issues from his time in the war and his family life. That set up the next century and a half of mayhem very neatly.
Now there is Elena, who is like Katherine in some ways and very much not like her in others - and Damon is in love again.
But the thing is, he can try and change for a person, or he can try and do some of that work because he wants to - and what he is struggling with now is who he wants to be - to strike a balance between being a lone wolf who doesn't have any ties, and somebody who is a predator and doesn't deny it but who won't kill you *just* because you annoy him for two seconds.
Gah.
That is a great song choice - Damon doesn't want to lose himself again, but he does want to love, and he is terrified of losing control of himself so completely.
*HAS THOUGHTS*

Yes. I've just been reading some philosophy (okay, it was "Star Trek and Philosophy") and it occurs me to that what Damon needs to learn is to think of humans as "ends unto themselves" and not as "means unto another end", which is really what he does with most people. Which doesn't mean not taking care of threats, it just means taking the other person into account as a person, instead as a salad bar or a blank wall to talk at or a way to vent his rage.

Date: 2011-02-10 06:05 am (UTC)I love how the vid is really from Damon's POV and how these women make him feel. And how that's not a good thing to Damon.
It really isn't - love always seems to bring Damon into personally-transgressive zones. He decides to become a vampire and be on the side of vampires for Katherine (and he decides to go through with actually becoming a vampire for Stefan), and now he's neither fish nor fowl and he doesn't know how to deal with it. The vampire that he's been for over a century has a way of dealing with things that has worked for Damon. But now that he's letting himself care again, all these ways of dealing with himself aren't working so well anymore.
You really highlight all the things that make Elena/Damon so attractive. Very sexy and well-timed. You managed to get a lot of stuff into the vid without it just being a bunch of fast cuts. And of course, it's helps that there is a story, it builds up to the violent acts at the end.
♥
I love building stories. This song worked so well for me because I was able to use it to tell a transitional story and that bridge is just so tense and the way it builds up to the climax works so well on the aural level - there is that tension in the Damon/Elena relationship and it winds Damon up tighter and tighter until he explodes.
