butterfly: (Vampire Diaries - Forbes Tough)
[personal profile] butterfly
So, Tyler has been informed by Jules about vampires being around and having killed his uncle and Caroline is involved. And this means that he... actually goes and talks to her about it (Caroline had thought that he was there to talk about the kiss, so she's a little startled, I think, when he agrees so easily to 'not go there').

Tyler feels all kinds of betrayed that Caroline knew all this time that Stefan and Damon had killed Mason, and Caroline feels like shit. I want to give her a hug.

We are totally taking advantage of having Damon's room. With its shower. Hello, naked Damon. Anyway, he hears the news (about Rose attacking people 'last night' and I love it when we get very firm time knowledge, so, thank you, news person). Jessica's body has also been found, he hears.

Carol Lockwood has set up a public memorial for all those recently lost.

Elena and John have a prickly conversation. Neither of them trust the other one. Jenna and Alaric come downstairs, surprised by John's presence. Alaric shares a significant glance with Elena and then heads out. Possibly to report to Damon (well, he does it a lot. Not that I mind).

John breaks the bio!daddy news to Jenna.

Damon is not impressed by Stefan bringing Uncle-Daddy John back.

"He said he could help us and we're desperate."
"We're not that desperate, Stefan. The guy tried to barbecue me."

Stefan knows that Bonnie's friend is working with Elijah. Wait. Did Bonnie know that? Did she figured that out in 2x11. Anyway, we are now working on a 'moonstone still active' assumption, which is a good one. Damon understands that things suck, but he still doesn't get why John is being brought in. John claims to know a secret way to keep Elena safe from the sacrifice (that he learned from Isobel).

I... am dubious.

"You cared about her after five minutes. I wonder what that means."
"It means that I care. I'm evolving. I'm changing into a man capable of greatness. Better watch your back because I might just have to get a hero hair-do of my own and steal your thunder."

Ha! Oh, Damon. So, Stefan has decided that he's going to care now about the whole Rose thing. Great timing, Stefan. That was useful.

Caroline sends Stefan a '911' text. Yay, Caroline-Stefan scene!

Stefan - "He (Damon) thinks all werewolves should die. And he's not wrong to think that, Caroline. I mean, what if Tyler tries to retaliate. He has every right to - he could get himself killed."

Caroline wants Stefan to talk peace with Tyler. She doesn't want Tyler hurt, "we're friends".

Jules is over at Tyler's trying to convince him that eternal hatred between werewolves and vampires is the only way to go.

Tyler: "You know how stupid that sounds?"

Ha. Good for you, Tyler. Go ahead and maintain a healthy skepticism. She wants him to cast away his old life and run away with her and the other werewolves. Tyler is still looking wary of her. Good.

Damon comes into Elena's house and wonders where John is. "Not here," Elena tells him. She tells him that John broke the news of him being her dad to Jenna and Damon asks her if she's okay. Aw.

Elena is all 'dude, my boyfriend Stefan trusts my horrible bio-dad John - what is up with that?' and Damon totally doesn't get it either. Elena and Damon are united in thinking that John is someone that they don't trust and don't want around.

"What are we going to do?"
"Kill him.
"Damon."
"I'm joking! Okay, I'm a little serious."
"Damon!"
"I'm not going to hurt him, Elena. I'm a good guy now, remember."
"What does that mean?"
"I'm going to have a civil conversation with your father."

Elena, never one to be left out of things and definitely not when they involve her, volunteers herself to join. Oh, Damon. There was such an element of... overplaying with a hint of something bitter underneath when he calls himself a 'good guy'. Just like when he was saying something similar to Stefan. He's mocking what he wants but believes that he can't have.

Stefan's idea of talking to Tyler involves strangleholds. Okay, then.

Jules kisses a guy named 'Brady' hello. I'm going to assume that he's a werewolf, too. Jules wants to claim Tyler over to their side more than she wants vengeance for Mason's death.

Carol and John are talking at the memorial. John gets the happy news that Damon is the new leader of the council. He is exactly as thrilled as you would expect him to be. Jeremy and John see each other. Jeremy is a bit snide and snarky.

"You can't come around and start up with all this anti-vampire stuff."

Jeremy offers the ring back, if John wants it (he doesn't), and he refrains from going to lunch with him. Jeremy is looking really cute in this episode. He spots Bonnie and then Luka's dad (Jonas?) comes up to her.

Ah, Elena found out from Elijah that Jonas and Luka were working from him? That explains that.

Hmm. "Spare me the witch-loyalty crap."

That seems to be a theme of this episode - group(powers) loyalty versus established friendship-group loyalty.

Ah, and here comes that second half - Jeremy comes to back Bonnie up and they leave together.

Jenna is currently processing the fact that she lives in a soap opera. And she doesn't even know yet that it's a supernatural one!

"How is it even possible to keep a secret like that?" Jenna asks. Ah, Jenna. Man, if she only knew how many of her loved ones were currently lying to her about pretty much everything important in their lives. Anyway, John walks into the Grill and over to Jenna and Elena's table. Then he looks over and Damon and Elena walk in, completely lacking personal bubbles with each other.

"All I'm asking is that you try to keep it together. Be the better man."

Oh, wow, Elena, if you actually were trying to sum up exactly what you are always asking of Damon and exactly what is tearing him apart right now... it would be those exact words. They also go over to the table to say 'hi'.

Stefan and Tyler are managing to communicate. In ways that don't involve violence. But then a phone buzzes. It's Jules and Tyler asks her for help before Stefan manages to grab the phone away.

Oh, yay, we learn that Damon is also trying Katherine's idea of tiny amounts of vervain in their system. I'm not shocked to hear that Stefan and Damon did that together (because Stefan actively not acting to help both his brother and Elena actually would be very surprising) but it's good to get confirmation.

John doesn't want to tell Damon anything about Klaus until he's sure that he can trust him and count on him.

Jules and Brady kidnap Caroline. Brady shoots her. In the head. Not fun. Do not want Caroline getting hurt by anyone. Caroline wakes up in a cage, in pain, with the bullet wound still in her forehead. Not on, Jules and Brady. The bullet pops out (painfully) and Caroline wipes at her healing forehead.

Brady shoots her again (in the chest/shoulder). And implies that he's going to have fun doing it a lot more. Ugh. No torturing Caroline. That's just... ugh.

Stefan gets a call from Caroline's phone - Jules. She tells Stefan to bring Tyler to her in twenty minutes or Caroline dies. Hey, guess who isn't going to think your plan is awesome, Jules? Tyler.

Andie Starr wanted to meet Damon, so Jenna performs an introduction (she's the woman from the earlier news cast). She wants to buy him a drink. I'm guessing she wants lots of things. Damon is pretty attractive. Damon excuses himself and goes over to Elena, who notes that Damon "totally blew her off."

"I'm steering clear of all women at the moment."
"You didn't have to be rude."
"Trust me, it's in the best interest of women everywhere."

The way he is right now, probably true enough. Stefan calls to fill Elena in on the werewolf news. Damon is not pleased that he's been kept out of the 'Tyler knows' loop. Damon does, indeed, want to kill Tyler. Elena really, really doesn't want him to do that. He calls her on assuming that he'll do the right thing because it's her asking; she asks him again to "be the better man".

John barrages in on them. Hello, John, they were having a moment. Damon assigns John to keep Elena out of the business of saving Caroline and then he heads out. John is okay with that because he really wants some answers.

"Putting your faith in him was a dumb move."
"Are you saying that I should put my faith in you, after everything you've done to Stefan and Damon?"

Elena is not interested in buying what John is selling.

The meet-up is happening. Oh, and there are a lot more wolves than just Brady. They pretty much surround the Salvatores and Tyler. Damon sends Tyler over to the werewolf side (specifically over toward the RV that Caroline is being held in - take the hint, Tyler). Damon cheerfully admits to killing Mason. Then a big fight happens. Tyler takes the hint and goes into the RV. Tyler hesitates a moment and then he releases Caroline.

Stefan takes out a couple of werewolves and gets stabbed in the back. Damon gets shot in the arm by Jules. And when Jules sees Caroline coming out of the RV, she grabs her and holds the gun to her. Brady is about to stake Damon when he (and Jules) are felled by a pain in the head. As are all the non-Tyler werewolves. It's Jonas. He's there to protect the people that Elena loves, as per Elijah's promise. And he tells Tyler to tell the wolves to get the hell out of Mystic Falls when they wake up.

Stefan walks Caroline home. She says that she's fine and Stefan tells her that she doesn't need to pretend with him. Awwwww.

"I'm okay," she says. "I'm not girly little Caroline anymore. I can handle myself."
"You sure can," Stefan says. Admiringly. I know that she's supposed to be his new Lexi or whatever, but they have such a nice chemistry.

Damon opens the door at his place to find John wanting to talk.

"Personal feelings aside, I think you and Stefan will do all you can to protect Elena."
"I agree with that statement."

So, John brought gifts. The ingredients for killing an Original. He found them out from Isobel, who is on a mission of her own to do something to thwart Klaus.

"Where Elena is concerned, you and I are on the same side."

Matt calls Caroline (they'd made plans earlier) and she lies to him and says that she's with Bonnie (who is currently laughing/flirting with Jeremy in the Grill, in plain sight of Matt. Ouch). He knows that Caroline lies to him now.

Caroline opens her door to find Tyler there. He wants to check on her.

"You stood there when they were planning to kill us. You didn't do anything!"
"I didn't know what to do."
"You help your friend. That's what you do."

Caroline severs her friendship with Tyler - she'd been tortured all day. I don't blame her. Tyler is certainly taking it to heart. I hope that comes out all right in the end. Do the right thing, Tyler.

John is giving Elena a gift, too. A bracelet of her mother's (Miranda).

"Miranda and Grayson were your parents, Elena. And I know I'm nothing to you. You have no reason to believe me or trust me. I've done so many horrible things, but when you lost your parents, I lost my brother. My family. I lost my way. I'm probably never going to make things right with you, I know that, but I'm going to do everything I can to protect you and protect this family."

John heads out.

Stefan is there, Elena hugs him, and she tells him that she still doesn't believe John. She asks after Caroline.

Tyler goes to talk with Jules and Brady. He tells them about the moonstone.

Stefan collected Elena and Bonnie to go spend the night with Caroline, just the three girls. Caroline could use something like that after her horrible, terrible day, yes. They hug her, Elena and Stefan mouth 'love you's at each other, and he heads out.

Damon and Andie Starr are in his bathtub, naked and soapy.

"What do you want, Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome?"
"I'm not that tall."

He called her because he has a problem that's really messing with him.

"I'm in love with a woman that I can never have."
"I knew it. I know how to pick 'em. So why can't you have her? She's with another man, I assume."
"Yeah, but that's not the point. The point is I'm in love with her and it's driving me crazy. I'm not in control."
"You don't trust yourself around her?"
"I don't trust myself around anyone, Andie. I'm bad, Andie. I do things... I kill people."

It takes her a second to take that in - when Damon sees it starting to affect her, he leans in and compels her not to be afraid.

"Why do you kill people?"
"Because I like it. It's in my nature; it's who I am. But then I have to stay together to protect her and she wants me to be the better man which means that I can't be who I am. See the problem I'm having, Andie?"
"Well, maybe this is who you are now. Love does that, Damon, it changes us."

Damon doesn't want to think about that now. He kisses Andie and then he drinks from her.

We cut to... Katherine in the tomb, it looks like. And John is there to see her. He's working on getting her out of the tomb.

Loved that episode. Tons happened in it, there was great tension and character development - some great creepy moments (the bathtub scene) - and the Damon/Elena stuff is just... yeah, I love that stuff. And I'm so glad Uncle-Daddy John is back.

Again: family over loyalty to a species is being hammered home this season. I hope that Tyler gets that point.

I also want Matt to find out what's going on because yes, it looks bad right now, but Caroline had a crap day. Unfortunately, by lying to him she is setting up the bad situation that so many people in Mystic Falls find themselves in and it ends with them getting eaten or something else unpleasant.

Can you see my not-shocked face when John turns out to have ulterior motives? *snorts*

I like that there may be a bunch of werewolves, but the vampires have humans, a witch, warlocks, and general 'do not fuck with my family' on their side. Being batshit insane is actually a good skill, as they are going to find out.

Jules is not a nice lady. Ech to Brady as well.

I think that Matt would be a good addition and he and Jenna could stare at each other and wonder 'HOW ARE THESE OUR LIVES?!' quite a bit. It might help ground Tyler a bit too.

Oh yes, the vampires, who are painted as 'completely insane predators with no redeeming qualities' are actually the ones who have the best family around, because they are WORKING at it. And they don't discriminate, unlike the werewolves.

Oh their conversations would be HILARIOUS.

I suspect there would be heavy drinking. You know if Damon broke it to them that he would provide liquor. Because he cares.

I love that the vampires are not...honorable exactly, but that if they make a promise, they keep it and yet, if you cross them, they will enact utterly bloody vengeance on you. It's pretty impressive and makes me think that there is some faulty wiring in the werewolves if the concept of 'loyalty' didn't make it through at any point. Honestly, being that racist is only going to lead to VERY BAD THINGS.

hey, I'm curious about your thoughts on Damon/Andi: do you see similarities to Katherine/Stefan, where he's controlling the fear of vamp-knowledge but a certain percentage of it is real? I guess it remains to be seen, but the idea is interesting to me... (a) that he's still on some level stuck emulating Katherine and (b) that he's evolved beyond seeing humans as complete objects (like back in 1x1-1x4), even as he longs to recapture that headspace. The way they had him bite her vs how they showed the first bite on Caroline is different -- he lunged at Caroline in a sudden, vicious way and he starts by kissing Andi and then bites in more smoothly as she makes a very pained face that transitions into something that could be pleasure.

Oh, that was perfection. But Damon's lines usually are.

Not that I don't dig the banter that Stefan can also dish out these days. I've really come around to like him better: he's a good friend to Caroline, and he's stopped trying to "protect" Elena by keeping her in the dark. Approval from me!

Jenna is currently processing the fact that she lives in a soap opera. And she doesn't even know yet that it's a supernatural one!

Best. Summary. Of. That. Scene. Ever.

God, this show's so well-done.

To be fair -- God, I can't believe I'm defending Stefan, of all vamps! ;) -- Caroline is a lot stronger physically. Both Caroline as a vampire and Bonnie as a witch are, not to put too fine a point on it, a lot harder to kill.

But his attitude towards Elena: problematic, you're absolutely right. I'm takin' the better and open communication as progression. Baby steps. *g*

if I've ever heard Stefan use that kind of admiring tone with Elena

Devil's advocate again: Caroline has developed, in great strides, whereas I personally thought Elena was pretty damn kick-ass to begin with.

Not that I don't think Stefan has weird -- or perhaps just ANTIQUE -- views on romance, deep down...

a 'huh, Stefan is making Stefan/Caroline so shippable to me'

Oh, interesting! This hasn't occurred to me at all, mostly because I don't see these kinds of intentions and cues in either actor's performance, especially in the context of a show where signals are not generally subtle -- think Damon re: Elena, think Jeremy re: Bonnie, think Tyler re: Caroline, and so on.

h it would be interesting if the reason that Stefan is reacting that way is because he only has pure friendship feelings and that if he were romantically interested, his behavior might change

*nod* I believe that's a good part of it. (But haven't read the books, or read spoilers for the show, so this opinion may be jossed in no time flat, given the pacing of TVD.)

I always tend to be more interested in shipping couples that develop a friendship first (which is probably likely also part of the reason that I prefer Damon/Elena to Stefan/Elena).

Does anyone prefer Stefan/Elena to Damon/Elena? *ggg* I get that; it's possibly my favourite dynamic ever, friends to lovers, although more often than not, shows prefer to break my heart with the execution, see Fringe for the latest example...
