The Return

Hmm, Katherine wanting a look-see at her descendant that looks just like her and has the Salvatore boys all atwitter.

So, did Katherine steal the Ring of Not Dying? Because it seems to me like that would be the most effective way of fixing Dad Uncle John.

And Bonnie is getting to face the unintentional consequences of her actions re: letting the bad guys have the vampire disable device.

Is Damon realizing that he has actual real friendship-type feelings for Sheriff Forbes? Aw.

Wow, Bonnie, using Damon's feelings for Elena as a open prod to get him to do shit?

Damon talks to Elena right away about 'the kiss' (she is baffled). This show! Where people talk about things.

Damon's realization that Katherine pulled one over on him is priceless.

Oh, hey, it's Stefan's turn to deal with Katherine-as-Elena!

Since Stefan has actually has sexual moments with Elena before, he knows when he isn't having one.

"What happened?"
"Katherine happened."

So. Their house is not safe and they need to move immediately because Katherine does not mess around (or, rather, she totally does and it's messy and bloody and bad for everyone).

And Damon can't help but taunt Stefan about the kissing that wasn't even Elena. Elena shuts down the whole thing (or tries to) but Stefan just wants to have a raincheck and fight it out with his brother later (Damon is okay with this arrangement).

"And then what?"
"Stake her. Rip her head off. Something poetic."

(Damon does not like that Katherine mucked about with the squishy feelings that he has for Elena. Those are his squishy feelings and he will not have her mucking with them)

So, what with Bonnie using a vampire's power for her own interests (saving Caroline), will this bleed into her feelings at all?

Also! Caroline is so adorable and I'm so glad that she's alive and she and Matt are still being fluffy and normal and cute.

Another uncle!

(okay, even when Tyler and his random uncle hug, their hips touch. What is up with Elena and Stefan's hips being kinda 'do not want' during hugs; I want to know. Because of the rest of their bodies successfully manage the 'do want')

Ah, Elena has the Ring of Not Dying!

And Stefan shows that he's just as capable of being ruthless and bloody in defense of Elena's emotional health as other, supposedly more morally-impaired brothers are.

Tyler just invited Katherine into his home.

*sigh*

They just need a town-wide class re: vampire education, I don't know.

So, now, Bonnie is just going to randomly torture Damon whenever she feels like it? Regardless of what Damon is or does, that is not a trick from the 'good guys' camp, Bonnie. You're making this more a case of two shades of gray having a cold war rather than the good witch versus the evil vampire (which I'm okay with. It makes things more interesting).

And now Bonnie's facing the evil vampire that created the vampire that she's pissed off at.

Katherine having a little moment of "hey, cutie" over Matt was kinda adorable and funny. "His eyes are so blue!"

Jenna has to be kinda freaking over the whole Damon-Elena-Stefan thing. Given that she only knows that Damon is Stefan's older brother and she caught 'them' kissing.

"I don't get hurt."
"No. You don't admit you get hurt. You cover it up and get angry and do something stupid."

She so completely has his number.

That conversation is so ouchy for Damon. I mean, yeah, but. Still.

"You hate me? That sounds like the beginning of a love story, Stefan, not the end of one."

Katherine is a great character. Spoiled and vicious.

Oh, Stefan. That, there, with Damon. That was so awesome.

"So, no. I'm not going to fight you."

Wait, the Ring of No Death only works against the supernatural? That's disappointingly limited.

Wait, a wooden stake is considered 'supernatural'? Having your neck broken and being thrown off a balcony is supernatural because a supernatural being is doing it?

So, I do really like the show but there's this kinda odd thing that's... it's like the only people who get love are Stefan and Elena. And I don't mean that in a... 'they're a couple' way (though, also, yes). I mean, here, Katherine saying that she wants/loves Stefan and Matt still appearing to be more than half in love with Elena (maybe that'll change this season, I don't know). And it's just... yeah, I don't know. It... bothers me. Like Caroline said, about always being 'second-choice'. We'll see what happens with that, I guess.

Oh, I knew it wouldn't be pretty if Damon snapped. Oh. But it wasn't Katherine who finished it - Elena was wrong about that - it's not Katherine anymore, at least not the final switch. It's Elena and he couldn't handle it; couldn't handle both the women than he love(d)s telling him that it would always be Stefan and never him. But he never would have gotten to that place (at least not this quickly) if not for Katherine pushing the envelope. Making him push it, too, and get rebuffed.

Damn it. Jeremy. Elena's little brother.

Damon was making me cry and then he snapped Jeremy's neck and he's just... damn. this show, man. This show. He'd rather have her hate him than 'care about' him but pick Stefan anyway. Oh, Damon, that is not healthy coping techniques. Not that you ever learned any (and because I'm apparently Stefan at this point, my affection for Damon hasn't even flinched).

Uncle John gave Jeremy the ring. No dead Jeremy! Yay! And I see you, Stefan, trying to excuse Damon's actions by saying that he must have noticed the ring. No matter what, he's your brother. Even if Elena hates him now.

And Katherine fucking killed Caroline. Oh, shit. (but she has the vampire blood in her, so she'll come back. Shit. There goes fluffy bunnies and normal love)

I love how this episode built up all of Damon's squishy-soft human feelings just so that it would be that much more of a complete painful snap when he breaks at the end.

Brave New World

So, I just realized that Kevin Williamson is doing this show. Dawson's Creek guy. The guy who did the first couple of seasons of the show and then left and only came back to do the series finale. Who was planning on having the series end Dawson/Joey because that was the planned endgame, but once he watched the episodes he'd been gone for, he realized that the real 'love story' moments were all Joey and Pacey. That J/P could be the only fitting ending. So, he changed his plan and went with what was right for the characters and the story. Ha! Kevin fucking Williamson. Man. It's been a while. He roped me back in, finally.

Oh, baby almost!vampire Caroline is so innocent and confused and I want to cuddle her and protect her and I can't. Oh.

"If I thought you wanted to kill me, we'd be having a very different conversation."
"Yeah. Damon is the one who deserves it." (for, you know, giving Jeremy what he was asking for. Just saying.)
"I want you to forget about Damon."

Seriously, it's his brother. Stefan is not going to back any 'kill Damon' plans.

Ah. Elena. That whole 'honest relationship' thing that you want to have with Stefan will probably suffer if you can no longer discuss the other very important person in his (un)life. Just saying.

Damon just got put in charge of the council. At this rate, he's going to be running the town by the end of the season.

Oh, Caroline. 'this sunlight is burning my fingers. but why?' Poor Caroline. Poor Matt.

Oh, Damon. Fishing to see whether or not Elena gives a damn. After he killed (well, 'killed') her brother. *sigh*

And then changing the subject to avoid the Katherine question.

"We don't know what [Katherine] is up to."
"Sure we do. She came back to profess her eternal love for you. So, I'm going to let you deal with her." Ha.

So far, Caroline is the best-behaved baby vamp that we've seen.

And then she goes to the bad place where she compels and eats people. Oh, Caroline. I want to hug you. Except that's probably dangerous right now.

Oh, that Damon and Jeremy scene. How was that so hot? I guess because Damon is so completely sure of himself (in the way that comes from not really having anything to lose anymore). And Jeremy shouldn't be so sure of himself. Damon was willing to kill him once already.

Caroline! "My husband likes to get kinky." Oh, Caroline. Well, she didn't kill the nurse, at least.

Ha, I love that Damon volunteers Stefan (or, as he sometimes affectionately calls him, 'Stef') for the arm wrestling, not himself.

Elena and Damon:

'I totally hate you and will go nowhere with you'
'but it's really important'
'okay, fine, I'm going'

Basically.

WOW, ELENA, THAT HATE IS SURE STRONG (or, more interestingly, her trust in Damon has managed to stick around, despite him 'killing' her little brother).

Damon is acting more like the snarky voice of 'death is the solution to every problem' that... okay, he always stayed that. But he's all... totally on the other side of the room from Stefan and Elena.

Poor Caroline. I do hope things go better for her than they did with Vicky (Vicki? I've seen different places spell it differently. I guess I could check IMDB or something).

Bonnie has apparently decided that Damon is the root of all evil. Elena only thinks that he's the root of some evil and is kinda horrified at the whole 'incapacitate Damon with pain and then set him on fire' plan, especially coming from Bonnie, who she thinks of as one of the good guys (despite the betrayal from last season).

Oh, and it's still effective to use Elena as a weapon/shield against Damon.

Just realized that I haven't said much about the Lockwood werewolf subplot. And... I'm not going to say anything now, having noticed the title of episode 3.

Jeremy and Damon just had a bonding moment. Jeremy is the new Alaric. Maybe, one day, he'll even punch Damon and it will be a new friendship born.

Aw, is Caroline no longer second-place to Elena in Matt's heart?

So... Elena knows about Katherine. How is she not trying to encourage Jenna to move house? You know, so that she and her household aren't vulnerable in their sleep.

Vampire romance: compelling the guard to walk away so that you can ride the Ferris Wheel. And I'm not even sure Elena notices any more, the line that is casually being crossed.

"I came back to this town to live a life with you."

Wow, awfully sure of yourself, weren't you? You didn't know that Elena was going to fall in instant puppy love with you. Sure, with the good looks, you probably knew you had a shot at something but... dude.

You know, I do like Stefan and Elena, but I basically have the same problem with them that I did with John and Aeryn from Farscape... they're just too easy. It's all so... pat and obvious. I don't know. I do like them, though, whereas I actually actively disliked John and Aeryn as a couple (liked them both separately, though). Ha. I think I'm in the only person in fandom who could compare John/Aeryn to a couple and it would be a bad thing.

Bad Moon Rising

So, I see that the Fearsome Foursome still appears able to work in the same room on issues (FF: Alaric, Damon, Stefan, Elena - yes, Bonnie is Fearsome, but she doesn't work well with vampires, so she has her own group) despite the new (non-sexual) Elena and Damon tension.

"when he fought one of the carnival workers"

Or, more accurately, when Damon set him up to fight one of the carnival workers and you watched and the whole thing indirectly led to said carnival worker's death a little while later.

I am curious about whether or not Alaric would have been brought in at all if they hadn't needed to pump him for information from Isobel.

"We can bond in our anti-Damon solidarity."

Yes, I'm sure that you both hate Damon equally. After all, he killed Alaric's wife, who also wanted to be a vampire (like Jeremy) and didn't really mean it (like Jeremy). You know, you do have a lot in common.

So, does Jenna know that Damon is the one driving Alaric and Elena to go through Isobel's things? Because, again, she knows none of the details, but she did see 'Elena' and Damon kissing. Oh, and she saw the dance last season, too (as did Alaric). And she interrupted a couple of other complex-looking moments between Damon and Elena as well. At some point, she has to want to talk to her niece about her appearing to be cheating on Stefan with his older brother. Right?

Okay, Elena giving Stefan a deep kiss in order to jab at Damon is... complicated of her (and yeah, that's what she's doing. She felt no need to give kisses that passionate when she and Stefan were up in her room, alone).

Stefan and Bonnie. Good, strong scene. Stefan being the vampire that Bonnie does trust (the person that she was willing to lower the seal for back in FMO).

"You did kill her brother."
"There is a huge asterisk next to that statement."

I don't actually think Elena hates Damon. But she is really pissed off at him. It's kinda a fine line (when does being 24/7 pissed off at someone equal hatred?) but... yeah, I don't feel like she really hates him.

Bonnie, Stefan, and Caroline need to have more scenes together. This is great.

Elena - sure, she totally hates Damon... but trusts him to walk right behind her.

Of course, then he proves that his trust when it comes to Elena's actual person is fully-founded, what with speeding in front of an arrow (something likely made of wood) to protect her.

See? Really pissed off, but when he's on the ground, she goes right down to check on him.

Oh, she was trying to shoot Elena because she thought Elena was Katherine. Man, that resemblance bites Elena in the ass.

Hee! Stefan is taking Caroline rabbit-hunting. Keep having scenes together, Stefan and Caroline! It's awesome.

"So, you're saying that I'm basically an insecure, neurotic control-freak... on crack."

Elena insults Damon, he grins. It's almost like being back near the end of S1.

"Why are you looking at him with your serious vampire look?"

Hee! Caroline and Stefan. Awesome! I love how she amuses him and takes him off-guard. And they have in-jokes now!

"No one deserves to have their mind messed with for shallow reasons."

Oh, really, Mister 'casually compelling the guard so that you can make out with your girlfriend on top of a Ferris Wheel'?

Damon: stands close behind Elena and leans in to talk quietly to her.
Elena: doesn't flinch.

"Man, it's a bummer we're not friends anymore. I could tell you what I know."

He was standing so close to her that she had to scoot sideways a little to get out from behind the desk.

"Friends don't manipulate friends. They help each other."

Damon is thinking: so... is she giving me instructions on how to get back on her good side?

Stefan, if the werewolf is locked up in a car, that seems like a good thing. You know, Stefan, I love you, but don't be dumb here.

Damon's like... well, that wasn't a 'no'.

Oh, no. Caroline's feeding off Matt. Oh, man.

And she pushes him into breaking up with her. So that she won't hurt him. Oh, Caroline.

Ah, Damon, played again. But by Elena this time.

(I still don't think she hates him, though. Or, at least, that it's anything like being as simple as just hating him. It is way more complicated than that. Or maybe Nina and Ian's fantastic chemistry is playing tricks on me. We'll see. I mean, I agree with Damon - she has every right to hate him. I just... I don't know. We could be defining 'hate' differently. She's mad at him pretty much constantly right now and she's willing to fuck him over a bit, but... maybe all the vampires on this show has redefined my 'hatred' compass for this particular universe. I think she wants to hate him more than she actually hates him. Rather like how Stefan felt about Damon in parts of S1.)

It's kinda sad that my first thought when Caroline was surprised awake was that it would be Bonnie, coming to remove the daywalker spell and kill Caroline. I'm sad that I assumed that of Bonnie.

Stefan and Elena have special rules when it comes to Damon. Each of them has slightly shifting lines, and a lot of people just don't GET it. And yet, even though Damon killed Jeremy, she IS going to go and help him when he's hurt.

*grins*

Katherine is a villainess. A magnificent manipulative psychotic villainess. And yeah, she just broke Damon in that moment.

Then he snaps.

And bounces back. Because he KNEW she didn't give a damn, but it was another thing to HEAR it. Fortunately there are people around that DO care about him and would rather not see him backslide.

Bonnie is, at this point, convinced that if she blames somebody else for everything, including the stuff that she has allowed/asked for, then things are all right. Which is not a White Hat thing to do. She has set herself up as Ms. Gray Hat, but again, Elena was not willing to let one of her friends be taken over by something bad. What she said to Bonnie was that it wasn't in her to do that, it wasn't who she was, and she took care of her friend.

Jeremy and Alaric - they have both been killed by Damon, had girls they liked go for Damon too (and they were killed too) and now? Alaric and Damon are BFFs, and Jeremy is starting to look at Damon like he might have the answers he's looking for.

Elena has a very 'vampirish' way of looking at the world now, which has happened due to her exposure to both Stefan and Damon and has been fascinating to track as her lines get redrawn. I love that moment in the season finale where Uncle John is saying that he will let all those vampires die and Elena's reaction is 'DO NOT WANT' when John tries to stop her from rescuing her OTHER vampire boyfriend.

*nods* Bonnie is going to be a better person when she can lay blame where it should rest - but she is proving in recent episodes that she CAN put all of that aside and work on Team Salvatore- because this is US vs. THEM and like it or not, THEM includes the end of the world stuff.

Alaric: how not to get a BFF.
Damon: ....but it works so well for you.
Alaric: I thought you were going to keep out of this?
Jeremy: No, really, I want to hear the story.
Alaric: >.<
Damon: HAVE A DRINK.
Alaric: .....Fine. *hands Damon his glass*

The timeline is pretty vague. I think some people are trying to work it out though.

Bonnie's lines may not include Damon in a friendly way yet, but if it's between him and the fact that he will protect Elena, then Bonnie will help.

Alaric and Damon have some of the best exchanges. And they have a PHONE TREE. How great is that?
