butterfly: (Adam and Kris -- cuddling)

I have class Wednesdays. This means that I was on the transit on the way home, called my mom at ten and she immediately asked me how to text in her votes. Because she simply had to vote for Casey (who is a hotter version of my dad when he was that age, apparently). There you go. She also liked his voice.

So, I ended up watching the performances just now, which will be happening every Wednesday-related show for the rest of winter quarter.

1) Todrick - Smarmy. Very smarmy. I like his voice, though, and he works the stage well. And he doesn't come across as smarmy when listening to the judges' opinions. I also disagree with the judges when they said that he ruined the song. It was very different, but I liked it.

2) Aaron - very country vibe. His voice works for it. And he didn't forget any words this time! Um, what was up with the 'fancy' split screen, Idol? I think Aaron should have waited a couple of years to try out, tbh. Nice voice, though.

3) Jermaine - Ah, the Jermaine that isn't as good as the Jermaine that they cut in Hollywood week (why, Idol, why?). And I still pretty much feel that way after his performance. His voice is good but... not grabbing me. I kinda love his outfit, though.

4) Tim - He has a lovely smile. Oh, no, Tim. What did I say last night? Don't do a Kradison song. Don't do a Kradison song. *sigh* A bit of a robotic performance, it felt to me, and then he completely went off the rails, musically. I think his nerves got the best of him. Yeah. Even if I hadn't heard Kris sing this one, that would not have worked for me. Oh, Tim, you might be leaving the Top 24 as quickly as you entered it. This really shows the importance of knowing your voice - Kris and Adam know their voices very well and how far they can push. Tim doesn't. The story of Kris liking "Give In To Me" but knowing that Allison's voice could serve it better than his... that's someone who has a very firm grasp on what he's capable of and he pushed and got better, but never hard enough to break.

5) Joe - Oh, he's one of the (many) guys who sang "Man in the Mirror" in Hollywood week that I tuned out because they weren't Kris. He has a sweet, light touch with this other song. Pleasant to listen to and he looked so thrilled to be up on stage that I wanted to give him a hug. Deserves to stick around another week and sing a more challenging song.

6) Tyler - No. Bad choice for you, Tyler, no matter how much you love the decade. It was boring and insipid, two things that song should never be. He just didn't pull off the required attitude at all. He needs to aim a little lower next time (if there is a next time for him).

7) Lee - Husky voice. I don't remember ever getting to hear this guy sing before. I like him and I hate this song, so... points to him for making me enjoy it. Good job, Lee. My favorite so far; I'm buying his on iTunes.

8) John - Haven't gotten to hear this guy sing since his (fantastic) audition. But, John, do we really need to bring God into our relationship this early? Is now a bad time to tell you that I'm atheist? He does have a great lower range. Very different sound from the rest of the guys. The 'God' thing feels a little bit cheap, like he's reaching out exclusively to a particular audience to get easy votes. I think he's good enough to get through on his voice without pandering (but maybe that's actually what he wants to be singing, in which case... I would wish him well and likely never buy his music).

9) Mike - why do I know so much about the birth of his child? I do not need to know anything that personal. I just want to hear if he can sing. And... his voice is... fluffy? I actually adore the original version of this song and Mike is paling in comparison (it's like the exact opposite of the Lee situation). This is not a hearts-and-flowers, fluffy bunny song!

10) Alex - I'm feeling a hesitancy. Which... kinda reflects the song. Hmm. He has a bit of raspy jazz voice, too. I want him to sing a duet with Lilly. He seemed really nervous. I hope he sticks around. I think he could do a lot better than what I just heard.

11) Casey - Once my mom told me that he looked a bit like a younger version of my dad, I could kinda see it. I like his sound on this song. He has a bit more vibrato than I like, but he's good. Very good. Wouldn't buy it, but it was good. I skipped the judges' comments on this one, because Kara was creeping me out. Eeesh.

12) Andrew - Good voice. I enjoyed his performance. Not quite willing to spend money on him, either, but it was good.

My favorites from the guys were Lee and Casey.

The two people I think deserve to leave tomorrow night are Tim and Tyler and possibly Mike (though there's probably no chance of Mike leaving).

The people where I've liked both their voice and the song enough to spend money on iTunes so far: Didi, Siobhan, and now Lee.

So, I showed my mom Kris's "Man in the Mirror" and Adam's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" when I got home, because she wanted to compare what they'd been like at the beginning to the new people and she was very definite on none of the S9 guys comparing to Kris or Adam (just as none of the girls' had Allison's powerhouse vocals). Well, I'm not expecting any of S9 to be Kradison, so I'm not overly disappointed by the fact that they aren't up to those standards.
