butterfly: (Ten (by elethoniel))

I have such a crush on the Doctor.

Not just the ninth, though I'm fond of him, but I've got a terrible crush on the tenth, plus I just watched the first half of City of Death and Tom Baker's Doctor (the fourth?) is absolutely adorable as well. The silly, silly hair! And he loves to talk, that one.

Anyway, watching CoD also introduced me to Romana, who I find interesting. She's more self-contained than the Doctor. I liked her. I also love how annoyed the Doctor is at that Det. Duggen guy for knocking out people that the Doctor was trying to talk to. And he's so polite, which brings me 'round to the tenth again, as I adore the way he apologizes to the Sycorax leader for digressing with Rose and the rest.

Ten and Four remind me more of each other than either do of Nine.

I like all three of them, but I must admit that the tenth wins out for me. He's just... adorable!

Also, I just acquired three Doctor Who icons, all by [livejournal.com profile] elethoniel.

The one up top there, and these two (yes, they have tiny text. I'm adjusting to it.):

Yep, Fourth. City Of Death is one of the stories that makes a lot of people ship the Doctor and Romana romantically, although it's also because it's the only Doctor/companion potential ship without serious power-imbalance issues and because the actors briefly married in real life after they both left the show. Also one of the finest Who stories of all time.

They had a nice vibe together. And she has the same sort of... oblivious self-confidence that I've noticed in all three of the Doctors I've met. Like when she was discovering the hidden Mona Lisas and she was just bopping along doing her thing while the Doctor was doing his thing (and I loved her pointing out the 'no eyebrows' thing, because that always niggles at me when I see a picture of the painting). Could be a Timelord thing, possibly. Or maybe that's part of why they get along so well.

I can see the point about the power-imbalance, though that's actually what I like so much about the Doctor and Rose. I find it fascinating -- like in the most recently US aired episode, where he manipulates Rose into choosing him over her family (and shows that he's aware that he is being manipulative). Because the use of the power is actually, in a lot of ways, a release of it and it actually shows that Rose does have power too. Like in Rose, where he asks her to come along -- she has the power to say 'no' and that does affect the Doctor (so much that he came back and tried again). He needs emotional contact, so the power-imbalance is nowhere near as vast as it could be.

But I've only met Romana and Rose, so I don't know how he acts with human companions when his world hasn't been destroyed. I don't know if he showed the same emotional neediness back then (he definitely still really wants Rose to like him in his tenth incarnation, though he seems to have lost the possessiveness aspect, at least judging from The Christmas Invasion, which would make it healthier for him).

Also, finished up City of Death and I really liked it. It all fit together and it was fun and exciting. Very nicely done.

The neediness is mostly new - there are very occasional hints of it in the old series but not enough to equalise power.

That makes a lot of sense, that he's needier due to his planet going 'boom' and all.

If you like the new Doc - have you seen the BBC's Casanova? He was fantastic in that!

Oh, I haven't. Do you happen to know if it's available on dvd or showing in the US?

I checked Amazon (both .com and .co.uk) and it wasn't on either yet. But I expect it will be. Keep an eye out!

I love the Tenth Doctor and can't wait to see the next series when it starts tomorrow. He really is adorable.

I think he is meant to be a throwback to the previous incarnations more than the Ninth because I saw a lot of the past Doctors in Ten during "The Christmas Invasion" when he was fighting the Sycorax leader. Nine was different because he was holding a lot inside from what happened to him during the war that he finally let go of during his last episode.

Four was the first Doctor I ever saw, and Sarah Jane Smith was my first companion. I've grown up with this show, and I love where it seems to be going now.

Love the icons!

I can't wait to read all about and to see it when it gets 'round to the US. Though I am very much enjoying the Ninth Doctor.

That makes a lot of sense. Like, Nine was his PTSD life and now he can move on.

Four's the Doctor that she traveled with? Neat. I should ask the person who supplied this tape if they have any with her.

If so, my absolute fave Sarah Jane Smith story is Pyramids of Mars (available on DVD in the US, btw), but it's probably best if you already know her first. Robot, the first 4th doctor story, is another good one.

SJS was in Three's last season, and then two-and-a-half with Four.

So, like Rose, she's been there through a regeneration? Neat.

Yay! The fourth doctor is my long favorite, and the one most US-ans around my age imprinted on because they were the first to be packaged for syndication and aired widely on PBS. City of Death is especially charming because the actors playing the Doctor and Romana really *were* in love and in Paris while that was being filmed.

Now my favorite is Eccleston, and I only wish we'd had more time with him.

Sarah Jane Smith was my favorite companion. I'm glad she'll be back in the 10th doctor's season. *Him*, I'm still undecided about... we'll see.

He had such fun floppy hair. Very likable guy.

*nods*

I think that part of the reason I've gotten so attached to Ten and not quite so much to Nine is because I already knew that he'd been regenerating at the end of the series when I watched Rose. I wish he'd decided to play the Doctor for longer, too, since he's a very good actor.

I'm looking forward to meeting her. I saw the BBC preview for Series 2 and her conversation with Rose was very cute (and did she really see the Loch Ness Monster? Neat).
