I do not believe that a woman ever deserves to be called a 'bitch', 'slut', 'whore', 'skank' or whatever other derogatory term may become popular in the future. Gender-based hate language is still hate language.

Of less importance, it looks like my time watching Doctor Who now comes with an expiration date: Steven Moffat will be taking over the show in 2010. Anyone who's read my journal for a significant length of time can guess at my feelings about that. This news makes me sincerely hope that Dollhouse will be awesome (that Joss will do good on what he's always done good on and improve on the things he sucked at) and remain uncanceled.

edit: spoilers for DW Series 4 in comments.

There have been two arguments in this whole thing that have really made me want to cry:

1) boys will be boys/that's just how men are, get used to it
2) those women deserved being called bitches

Yes, just yes.

I am hoping the show will still appeal to me *hopes*

I only saw this second-hand, already filtered through all my sane friends. But even so, it made me irrationally, incredibly angry, and if I had the energy, I'd go back to Supernatural fandom just to up the numbers of the intelligent and insightful fans.

Many people love Moffat. I'm not one of them, but I suspect his show will still appeal to many people. I just know that I strongly dislike the way he writes the Doctor, so I'll want to give his version of the show a pass.

I agree with that.

Told me a week ago that I would WANT David to leave, and I would have laughed in your face. //MELODRAMA.

What did you think of the way he wrote Nine?

Given this news, I'm even more interested in the upcoming two-parter. I really want to know if GitF is how he envisions Ten to be, or if it's basically an aberration. (Obviously I'm hoping an aberration. :p)

It's making me hope that Tennant isn't doing S5. Maybe Moffat would do better with a brand-new Doctor.

*hugs back*

The amount of hatred directed toward women in this fandom has always been intense. I've avoided most of it, but could see it happening -- people were complaining about Bela and Ruby before they'd ever appeared on the show. I mentioned at some point back closer to the start of the season that if a male character had Bela's exact story and interaction with the Winchesters, there would be so much slash written between 'him' and Dean and 'he' would be a fan favorite.

Does anyone know what kind of character Amy Acker is going to be playing?

I suspect there will be quite a bit of Moffat related drama. I plan to stay well away from it. I've already decided what I plan to do, so I won't need to get involved.

But I'm sad that I'm now hoping for David to leave with RTD.

I'll probably vent today and then be done with it all. The last thing I want to do is get in wank. Ew.

I suspected it MIGHT not happen (I heard he didn't want to, but I guess that was wrong), and already decided I'd put off the show until a new show runner comes along. I've learned the hard way to cut my loses.

A bit off, but less noticeably so. Also, on a side note, Moffat's exposition about the psychic paper in that episode feels really clumsy. It's his best episode, characterization-wise, though.

Yeah. I did that with Andromeda -- the first season is still some of the best harder sci-fi that I've ever watched... and when it descended into parody in the second season, I gave up on it.

And happened to the show because the show runner left. It makes a big difference.

As it stands I've still got it pretty good. I do think it's likely that David will leave (and I'll still have Nine and Ten who I adore so strongly, no matter what happens) and the Doctor is developing right now the way I want to. AND ROSE IS COMING BACK OMG. I never thought that would happen.

Very very little could do that. I am loving S4 SO VERY MUCH. And Tate went way beyond my expectations with her portrayal of Donna. asdjfasdk

You know I don't mind people saying they don't like the idea of Bela or Ruby because they got rid of Ellen and Jo for them and to state their reasons without resorting to bad language. I can live with that. it just kills me that people think it's okay to call these women characters horrible things because they are the bad guys! I watch Doctor Who, Due South and a lot of other shows that have women bad guys and the heros don't call them names like that at all!!! I mean the Doctor in the episode with the Sorveen? she was evil! she ate people and planned on destroying the planet. But the doctor after capturing her treated her with respect and caution and it worked. After seeing that...I'm sorry there is just no excuse.

P.S. I think I'm wrong about her eating people...but she definately had some evil plans.

Yes. Just yes.

I… I feel like my show has been canceled. I can’t see Steven Moffat giving me a fifth season of You Are Not Alone (yes, I’m shamelessly stealing your terminology)—much less a fifth season of I Create Myself, which is the show I fell in love with in the first place. (In fact, I’m not sure I’d want him to. I don’t trust him anywhere near Rose’s character arc.)

Exactly. There are valid reasons to dislike Bela and Ruby (just as there were valid reasons to dislike Jo -- I did dislike Jo in about half of her episodes but still was horrified that people called her a 'slut') but none of them require calling Bela and Ruby derogatory names.

As you mention, there are plenty of shows that have women playing bad guys that manage to still treat women as human beings worthy of respect.
