butterfly: (Baggage -- the Doctor)

Oh, brilliant. Everyone does it and he can even feel it happening. Not a surprise, but also a very good reason why he's never felt her before -- until they came here, she didn't exist (and I'm amused by the Doctor's explanation at the end. The TARDIS's freakout created her own paradox. Oh, TARDIS. She's really getting quite the emotional workout, what with opening the Vortex to Rose, getting nearly killed several times, freaking out when Jack hugged her, getting taken over by the Master and whatnot).

I have to say -- Martha is being amazing with the Hath. Firm, sympathetic, every inch a doctor. Really great.

Jenny is... I love her. And we're getting more out of the Doctor about the Time War because of her -- he can realize that he's a soldier too but without the bite of comparing himself to a Dalek.

And she couldn't kill him. The hug! I just... I really like Jenny.

Heartbreaking final scene with the Doctor and Jenny (and I did get those "Father's Day" echoes I was anticipating -- the kiss on the forehead, in particular).

This was, I think, the best episode for Martha yet.

Loved Jenny and I'm so glad that she's not only alive, she's out there ready to do the same sort of things that the Doctor does. I hope that means we'll see her again, but if we don't, there's another person who is a bit of the Doctor's legacy (like Martha, like Jack, like Sarah Jane, like Rose and Mickey).

And they have Donna tell Martha that she plans on being with the Doctor forever (another echo of Rose). Fascinating and really well-done to show us the different ways that Martha and Donna are approaching travelling with the Doctor -- like Rose, Donna sees it as a lifestyle change/choice, while for Martha it really was 'the trip of a lifetime' but not her life.

I really just loved the Doctor/Jenny stuff so much. It was really really organic and his reactions made sense. And hers did too. Her love was so uncomplicated. It had lots of cute and slightly fucked up moments because of that. I WANTED TO KEEP HER. :(

I really want to see her again. Otherwise the Doctor will hurt over her being dead when she's not. And that's too cruel.

All of the Doctor/Jenny stuff was just gold. GM did a really great job. She was so sweet (in her brainwashed soldier way). And she grew so much as a character, just over the course of this one episode.

I really hope that she comes back.

There is some hope. She's pretty much a time lord, so like ten years from now, they can pick up the thread and use some hand wavy science to explain why the Doctor didn't sense her regeneration.

But I think she'll come back. This series is all about reconnecting and it'd be odd for her not to come back.

Do you know what I liked the best? It’s what she said to the Doctor when they were finally reunited. “I took the surface route.” And… that’s it. That’s all she says. I think I fell a little bit in love with her, right there.

Loved Jenny and I’m so glad that she’s not only alive, she’s out there ready to do the same sort of things that the Doctor does.

I just want her back. The Doctor already had two families that he thought he’d never see again. This makes three. (Plus, I wanted to see more of the Doctor as a dad. It’s a good look for him.)

On the other hand, if this is part of the setup for “Journey’s End,” I’ll… well, I’ll take back all of the bad things I’ve said about “Last of the Time Lords.”

And they have Donna tell Martha that she plans on being with the Doctor forever (another echo of Rose).

That scared me. The terminal illness theory is starting to make more and more sense. :-(

Yes. I really liked that moment. She doesn't make a big deal about it, just says it and gets on with things.

I'd really love for Jenny to come back (and I really hope that Donna doesn't die!).

It's funny, because while I agree that this was an awesome episode for Martha (and Freema - her sobbing really did me in), at the same time I also kept wondering why she was even there, kinda like in her Torchwood episodes. She wasn't integral to the story in any way, was she?

She has a great agent? :)
I had the same feeling with last week's ending, and the great agent is the best excuse I can come up with hehe

I think she was there to show us the Hath's side of the story and the writers didn't want to split up the Doctor and Donna because they wanted her to elicit those emotional confessions from him and he needed a jumpstart to accept Jenny.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I came to eventually, as well. But. Once again, we have Martha Jones = Plot Device. And I really really hate it and don't want it anymore. Martha could be awesome, and that's what they keep coming back to: using her as a plot device. It makes me sad.

Well, no more than Donna was a plot device to reveal and nudge along the Doctor's feelings toward Jenny, I think. It was also, for Martha, a confirmation of why she'd enjoyed traveling with the Doctor but why it wasn't a life that she wanted to stay in. Without Martha, we wouldn't have gotten to know the Hath or seen that the Hath could be curious and sacrificing the way that Jenny was.

See, I see all that; I just think that it didn't have to be Martha specifically to show us the Hath's side, whereas it fits very much with Donna's character and her relationship with the Doctor to be the one to gently push him towards Jenny.

I like your idea of this being a confirmation for Martha's decision, though, because while Martha Jones may not have been integral to the Hath plot, I can see how the Hath plot and the entire journey might have been important for Martha Jones and her journey.

And have I ever told you how much I love that icon? I [heart] Peter Carlisle.

And a little bit of trivia, which you probably know, is that Georgia Moffat, who played Jenny, is the daughter of Peter Davison, the fifth Dr Who...

This episode just broke me. Broke me.
I just knew Jenny would die, and when she did, I just knew she'd come back, but it totally broke me.

The Doctor's face when he hugs her, realizing that part of him is still there... Dude, I couldn't even cry I was so broken. I don't even remember last time that happened to me.

Loved this episode, and Doctor Whoo keeps a flawless season so far!!

And I got to agree, Martha's best episode!

Yeah! Poor TARDIS, the one constant companion. Her emotional baggage is as big as the Doctor's!

I love Jenny and I like her interaction with the Doctor, how he got from mistrusting and denial to a point where he's infatuated because she's indeed really like him. I do hope we'll see her again these series and this is another plot device. If they had killed her, I would have been pretty underwhelmed. Just... no.

Yeah, I too got the immediate reference. You're right about people seeing it differently. Martha was actually happy to finally be home!

Also, was this the first story with no obvious Rose mention? Or did I blink and miss it?

If they'd really killed her, it would have felt like pointless angst -- give him someone just to take her away again. But since she's still alive, there's hope to see her again.

The smile she has right before she runs into the house is pretty adorable.

No direct Rose reference in the story (though tons of echoes), but on the BBC website, in the Captain Jack monster files for the Hath, there's another shot of Rose silently calling for the Doctor (it's around 1:19 into the clip).

His reaction is so heartbreaking. That scene where he holds her, it gets to you. I cried even on the second watch when I knew she will regenerate (?) in the end. Just can't bear to see him like that. First thought when she woke up was how happy he'll be to see her again! I really like this Season in terms of hope.

*nods* There's so much waiting for the Doctor. We've seen Rose looking for him and now Jenny's out there... he's not so alone anymore -- he just doesn't know it.

Freema brought more charm than I've seen before to her interaction with the Hath and her keenness to get home and see Tom. There was also the crying and 'I'm Dr Martha Jones! Who the hell are you!' but that's the script for you. I've finally got a sense of what they want to do with the character of Martha. The Doctor's turned her into an image of himself; she still shares his lust for life but she also has the damaged side it hurts too much to show her friends, she looks after the Doctor wistfully before she turns her back on the TARDIS.
