Vividcon 2007: Premieres

A fun, bouncy way to start off the show, though this vid started off a disturbing/annoying trend: exceedingly unhelpful or misleading summaries. The summary for this vid is "have you hugged your Ten today?" which led me to expect a somewhat angsty vid. The vid itself is very good, though.
It's Not Over (Supernatural) by
butterfly
My vid. I was really pleased at the reception, both in the premieres show and when people talked about it in Vid Review.
Seven Nation Army (It) by Gabby
I have never seen this movie and have no plans to ever see it (evil clowns are scary), but I adored this vid.
My Happy Ending (Eternal Sunshine...) by Abby (
tv_elf)
While I didn't like this as much as previous ESotSM vids that I've seen, it did effectively use a song that I hate in a non-ironic way.
Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay (Stargate: Atlantis) by
fairestcat and
lovelokest
This really didn't work for me. Whether that was song choice, character choice, or clip choice, it just felt flat to me.
Rodeohead (Firefly) by
absolutedestiny
absolutedestiny does it again. This is a simply fantastic vid -- funny and touching and wonderful.
Men in Black (Torchwood) by Apocalypse West (
diannelamerc)
The perfect vid to show people who have never seen Torchwood -- it completely sums up the show.
I Remember (Charlie Jade) by L'Abattoir (
gwyn_r and
feochadn)
Fantastically brilliant. I now rather desperately want to see the show.
Signal to Noise (Battlestar Galactica) by Keely
Hmm. Very interesting. Lee Adama-focus. I'm not sure whether or not I like it.
Cathain (Flyboys) by
klia
Really enjoyable vid with an unusual and beautiful song choice. I was mildly distracted by trying to figure out if one of the guys featured was James Franco (he was), but even with that distraction, I noticed how lovely this vid was.
Head over Feet (Lord Peter Wimsey) by
killalla
This didn't really work for me. Maybe because I didn't know the characters, but I didn't really feel that she'd 'fallen, head over feet'. She just felt too restrained.
Bankshot (Hustle) by
vagabondage
I've never seen Hustle, but this bouncy vid told me everything that I needed to know. Lots of fun.
Want (Supernatural) by
destina
Woah. Though this is another vid that has a confusing summary to me, because it explicitly mentions the Yellow-Eyed Demon as the PoV character, while the vid itself feels much more like Demons/Evil is the PoV character. Great vid, amazing song choice, but the summary confused me a bit.
Spiriti (Miracles) by
deejay
I'm sure that I'm being hampered by my lack of knowledge about the show in this vid, because it seems like the kind of vid that rewards having context.
Sick Cycle Carousel (Star Wars) by
wolfling
Really well done. I loved going from our sympathetic Obi-Wan, to showing Anakin/Vader having the same issues, and then Luke and Anakin figuring out how to break the cycle. Lots of great parallels were pointed out.
West of Her Spine (Dexter) by
sweetestdrain
This vid blew my mind. For me, Vividcon always seems to end up pimping me a show/fandom. Two years ago, it was The Dead Zone. Last year, it was Prison Break. This year, I came out wanting to see Entourage (based on a Club Vivid vid with the hottest guy ever), Charlie Jade and Dexter. There were three Dexter vids this year that I saw. Another misleading vid summary, but this one felt very deliberate ('finding love in the strangest places'). This vid felt like a deliberate bait-and-switch, where the eerie disjunction is a large part of the point, while the others just threw me off. This was such a disturbing/creepy look into a very twisted person's headspace. With each of the Dexter vids, I felt like I'd learned something new about the show, enough to want to see more (though I forced people to tell me a big spoiler... and I'm glad I know the answer).
Synthesizer (Buffy) by Zoe
This one didn't really gel for me.
Lifetime Piling Up (Stargate: Atlantis) by
cesperanza
Amusing, but not solely amusing. It fit Rodney well, had nice movement, and just clicked into place.
The Loyal (Children of Men) by
sdwolfpup
Intriguing. I'm not sure whether or not I want to see the movie, but I'm glad to have seen the vid.
Women's Work (Supernatural) by

I don't think I can ever watch this vid again. I felt assaulted while watching it, like I was the one being beaten, attacked, destroyed and killed. Maybe that's what the vidders were going for. I actually felt betrayed because (and this is the fault of my own expectations) the title of the vid led me to expect to see women kick ass. I don't know Hole, but the actual title of the song (Violet, which I looked up afterwards, which is when I found out that Hole was the group that had done 'he hit me (and it felt like a kiss)') would not have brought me to that conclusion. I spent the entire vid waiting for a sea change -- for Haley or Kat or Officer Kathleen or Jo or Ellen to show up, or to see the strong sides of the women that the vid did show being attacked. And it never happened. I felt like the vid was trying to tell me that I'm not allowed to both be a Supernatural fan and a feminist, that the vidders feel that Supernatural feels that the only reason for women to exist is to be brutalized, which so intensely far away from how I view the show that we might as well be in separate galaxies.
In the end, though, I think I could have handled this vid as a feminist critique of the show if it'd had a different title. I would have been able to give myself that distance before watching and not felt personally betrayed by it. As it was, I started the vid with no distance and ended up feeling like I'd been punched in the stomach (which, again, may have been what the vidders wanted).
ETA: Lesson in 'never say never' -- the vid as a feminist critique has been simmering in my head for the last few hours, battling out with the last bits of 'but my boys' (when they're actually irrelevant to the argument in question anyway), and has begun winning. I suspect that rewatching will occur soon, as re-evaluating has already begun. I may even come to terms with the vid's title.
Falling from the Sky (Battlestar Galactica) by
jarrow272
Excellent Starbuck character study.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley (Kingdom of Heaven) by Jo
Beautiful. As others said, the sense that Jerusalem itself is the object of the song comes through very clearly.
Tamacun (Dresden Files) by Seah and Margie
Bouncy, fun. Very 'yay' about the show it's talking about. If I hadn't already watched part of the DF pilot and decided to skip on the show, this vid would probably have pimped the show to me (of course, then the pilot might very well have thrown me out again).
The Adversary (Twin Peaks) by
astolat
Interesting. My sole knowledge of the show is 'David Duchovny in drag' which did not appear to be in the vid at all. Sadly, this meant that I actually spent the entirety of my first viewing looking for DD in drag as it was the only thing I was aware of. My second viewing was, therefore, much more emotionally affecting.
Cold as It Gets (Friday Night Lights) by
barkley
Wow. This vid really made me care about the character of Tyra and her struggle, despite my complete lack of interest in the show itself.
Nothing New (Firefly) by
heresluck
Hauntingly beautiful.
Another Sunday (Stargate: Atlantis) by
jescaflowne
The sparkliest, most enjoyable bit of fluff in the universe. Everyone in the world should see this vid.
Cosmia (Pan's Labyrinth) by
dualbunny
This vid has me torn between really, really wanting to watch this movie (because of the eerie beauty) and really, really wanting not to watch it (because the ending of the vid looks like it would be even more emotionally painful to watch in context).
Southwood Plantation Road (Doctor Who) by Sarah T.
Hmm. This is, I suspect, one of those vids that requires multiple viewings. There are certain places where I'm not sure what I got out of the vid was intentionally there or not.
The Trouble with Poets (Highlander) by
anoel
Delightful!
Dreams Are Not My Home (Torchwood) by Melina
An excellent Gwen character study. It shows how Torchwood changes her and her perception of normal and 'home'. Lovely use of Rhys.
Woodstock (Jeremiah) by
killabeez
Beautiful. I'm not sure whether it left me feeling saddened or at peace, but I liked it. Melancholy but not hopeless.

Date: 2007-08-15 05:29 am (UTC)If you felt like saying, I'd be very curious to know what you got out of it--as a relatively new vidder, I'm still very much figuring out how to get my points across successfully.

It was interesting to watch, both the first time and the times I've rewatched it -- there's this breathless cynical quality to the voice that actually fits the current version of the Doctor rather well. I'm rather curious about why the particular scene with the Doctor and Rose was used (with him 'burning' into being from the end of Parting of the Ways) -- to bring up 'replacement' feelings, because Ten was just coming into being... or something more prosaic like not wanting to go through various S2 episodes for just one thing (which I did in the first version of Pavlov's Bell)?
I liked the way you represented their relationship -- there's a lot of damage there, on both sides (but especially the Doctor's), and an inability to understand each other, which really comes across (starting from the beginning credits, with the separate images of them and then him acting crazy and her looking at him like he's a crazy person... and then, of course, ending at the beginning, where she's being baffled by this odd man on the street).
There's this one tech-related thing that I wasn't sure was intentional or not -- there are a few places where the video seems to be in reverse in the first few frames of the clip and then resolves into normal play.

Date: 2007-08-18 05:52 pm (UTC)Because the Tardis itself is the "house like a Louisiana graveyard/where nothing stays buried," and "nothing" encompasses both Rose (figuratively) and the Doctor (literally, and in that shot engaging in the ultimate refusal to stay buried which is regeneration). (Thus shortly thereafter the shot of the shadow of the reborn Dalek with motion continuing into the Doctor lying on the floor and then the shot of Jack lying on the ground and springing back to life, and of course finally the Master being reborn twice...they're all part of the same freakshow, so to speak.)
The jitter is an encoding-related glitch and it makes me want to shoot myself in the head that I didn't recognize it earlier--I think when I watched it I thought that was just a spaz on my computer's part.
It sounds like what I most failed to get across in this vid was any sense of humor whatsoever. Oh, well. Live and learn!!!
And thanks for the comments! I was horribly disappointed not to be able to go to the con at the last minute and thus to miss out on the feedback.

Date: 2007-08-18 05:13 pm (UTC)I mostly know Highlander through my roommate and general fannish osmosis (I think I've seen 10 episodes total), but I really enjoyed watching your vid. Bundle of fun.
