Tom Welling is great as Clark Kent. Because he can project that pure *niceness* that CK needs to have. That's the fundamental thing about Superman. It's not just that he has powers, it's that he's a genuinely nice person. He likes and trusts people until they give him a good reason not to.
Dean Cain was great at that, too. Just being able, without saying a word, to seem like the nicest guy you could ever meet.
But yes. That's the most important thing about Superman. Unlike Batman, he's not hiding a tortured past. He's a sweetheart who wants to help.
I remember reading an essay about 'Good', 'Nice', and 'Right'. It was about Discworld characters. The thing about Superman is that he manages to be all three without making people sick with his perfection. He's nice, he's good, and he's generally right, but he's not righteous and he's not annoying.
