Doctor Who 3x04 -- Manhattan
Apr. 21st, 2007 02:58 pmOh, my. So, I've been thinking about Rose a lot, but even so, this episode was just screaming her name.
First off, there's the actual rose-bud left on Tallulah's dressing table every night, even after he's gone (a rose as hope of a love surviving and coming home... I may actually die). Secondly, after Dalek, the Parting of the Ways and Doomsday, Daleks make me think of Rose. But mostly, there's Tallulah. Three 'l's, one 'h'.
"Your heart might break, but the show goes on."
"Every night, I have to go out there -- sing, dance, keep going, hoping he's going to come back."
I adored all of the bit characters in this episode (well, half-episode -- I'm really looking forward to the second half) but Tallulah was simply amazing, very gutsy and open-minded. And her holding the prop gun on the Doctor and Co. reminded of the Ninth Doctor in the Game Station. "Like I was ever going to use it."
My heart broke so much for the Doctor here. He's just trying to do a favor, show Martha the real New York to make up for what happened on New New York, and it goes horribly wrong. With Daleks, which is the most horribly wrong that it can go. He's trapped in a nightmare.
"They survive. They always survive, while I lose everything."

Date: 2007-04-21 10:39 pm (UTC)Oh, the accents. The accents are SO BAD, but love the ep. :D

Date: 2007-04-21 10:49 pm (UTC)(also, I don't hold the crappy accents against them, considering what a mash actual Americans can make of other American accents... and what we tend to do to other accents)

Date: 2007-04-21 10:53 pm (UTC)AND THIS EP JUST GOES TO PROVE THAT TEN WILL LICK ANYTHING. :D

Date: 2007-04-21 11:18 pm (UTC)I noticed the over-the-top-ness more than I usually would mostly because I was just listening to 'Invaders From Mars', one of the Eight audios last night on the train home, and it's basically the same sort of set-up with the 30's New Yawk and the over done aaccents, etc. :D The one that I REALLY noticed at the begining of the episode was the foreman, which one was he?
Am mostly amused by them, they don't actually turn me off to the rest of the ep or anything. :D

Date: 2007-04-21 11:01 pm (UTC)Was the guy that got absorbed by the Daleks an American? Because that accent had me snickering. Of course, it could have been an American trying to do a 1930s-type accent...

Date: 2007-04-21 11:08 pm (UTC)Wow, my counting sucks, because that's totally three. Ah, wait, there were two main British ones. Tallulah and Solomon were the ones played by Brits. But, yes, Diagoras, Frank, and Lazlo were all played by US actors.

Totally! :)

His face - he was just so bitter there. I don't like seeing the Doctor bitter.

Date: 2007-04-22 01:56 am (UTC)And she gets into the spirit of things so quickly! I was very impressed with her (and a Rose parallel -- the man she loves changes his face and she's freaked at first but once she realizes that it's really him, her feelings don't waver and she loves him still).

Yeah. He's lost so much to them and because of them. And that they get to survive and adapt and save themselves when he couldn't save his people and couldn't save Rose... it has to burn so deeply and so badly.

Date: 2007-04-22 04:31 am (UTC)I liked her a LOT, even with the funky accent. I'm hoping that the Doctor can fix Lazlo for her, please, because he's going to run from her otherwise.

Seriously. They always manage it, somehow. He can save the world multiple times over, but he can't manage to save the one person he doesn't want to do without.

Date: 2007-04-25 03:04 pm (UTC)Lazlo definitely seems emotionally scarred by the transformation (which is understandable). If the Doctor did fix Lazlo, it would definitely be for his sake, not Tallulah's, as she already seems to be adjusting (she's made of awesome).

*sigh*
I feel so bad for the Doctor, I really do. And he not only lost Rose that day, but he lost Jackie -- the first woman to 'mother' him in who knows how long. She really did treat him like a son-in-law by the end -- maybe not quite safe enough for her little girl, but she'd protect him to the ends of the universe (Love and Monsters is so good for Jackie's characterization -- if that was the only good thing about the episode, it would make me love it, but considering it also has the Doctor being all, "someone wants to talk to you" to Elton about Rose, and several other cute things, I love it).

Date: 2007-04-23 08:12 pm (UTC)I just posted my review of "Daleks in Manhattan." I'm a bit less positive about it than you are, but at least we agree on this: Talullah is wonderful. Also, I had not connected her character with Rose's, yet there are definitely similarities, as you point out.
Can hardly wait for next week. I need to know what happens with Dalek Sec, with the entire Cult of Skaro. Though they are the enemy, I don't want them to be destroyed just yet. They're just way too cool, way too important.
I'll friend you back asap.

Date: 2007-04-25 03:10 pm (UTC)Hiya! Yeah, don't try to read the whole thing. And I'm very much in a DW phase at the moment, so went hopping about to find smart people to read.

Tallulah is fantastic. Honestly, my positive feelings towards the episode are all about Tallulah and the Doctor (with some for the other guest actors).
Also, I had not connected her character with Rose's, yet there are definitely similarities, as you point out.
I respond really well to gutsy, heart-led characters.

I'm also really looking forward to what happens next.
