So, I watched the pilot again this morning, before heading off to work. Everything just worked together so well -- this time through, knowing the big revelations at the end, everything felt so intensely perfect, every line and action just what and where it should be. "Tommy could drive anything. Before he turned into Mother Teresa, he had a real penchant for joyriding."
Something that I didn't mention before, but that I adored: the girl with Sean (didn't catch her name in the show, but after looking at the cast list for the pilot, I believe the character was Mary Ellen, played by Lauren Bittner). I really liked Jenny, Tommy's apparent love interest, but Mary Ellen (?) impressed the hell out of me. He tells her to run, she starts to, but she sees him getting beaten up and runs back to jump on the back of one of his attackers. She doesn't stop him from getting beaten to hell and gets a bit knocked around herself, but she stays with him. I loved that. They could have done the typical 'guy keeps girl from getting hurt', but she refuses to allow it. That is my kind of woman.
And now, I'd like to talk about Jenny. I really liked her. I also really like that they aren't drawing out her feelings about Tommy. Because this was a major situation and she's very aware that the Donnelly boys are now in a very dangerous place. I think it's brave of her to tell Tommy that she does love him, even if she believes that nothing'll come out of it. Honesty isn't overrated. Jenny seems strong without feeling artificial -- I really believed in her friendship with Tommy and her affection for the other boys. And I loved the matter-of-fact way that she brushed off Joey Ice Cream.
As for the boys -- I already *heart* the Donnelly brothers. Tommy the most, because we've really gotten the most on him, but Kevin stole my heart when he answered Tommy's "Where are you going?" with "Wherever you are." Brothers! Squee! And poor Kevin, of the Sam Winchester-like hair and the Dean Winchester-like way with women, was really quite adorable. And poor Jimmy, he of the shattered leg and drug and guilt issues and the not-being-quite-as-cute as his brothers issue, he made me really feel for him and hope that things in his life would get better.
But Tommy, man. First, he's very hot. Second, he's responsible and loves his brothers so much that he'll give up a normal life for them. Third, he's an artist! All kinds of love for Tommy. And the Jimmy/Tommy hug was so sweet (see: current icon)! Much, much love.
