When all he hears is gibberish, Justin blames it on the fact that it's the middle of the night.
So he politely says, "Huh?" into the phone and waits for Lance's voice to make sense.
Again, he gets a blast of nonsense.
Finally, he clues in.
"In English, Lance."
"Oh! Right. I've just been practicing so much..." And he's never heard Lance sound this excited and that can only mean one thing.
"You got in?"
"Well, yeah. Probably."
"Probably?"
"I need to stick around. Make sure that they know how serious I am."
"Oh." And Justin's lack of excitement can be explained away by the fact that he had just woken up. Really. "So, you're saying..."
"I won't be able to do the Challenge."
Justin swallows hard and closes his eyes.
"Right. Okay."
"Justin..."
"Yeah?"
"I just wanted you to know."
"Thanks."
"I'm sorry that I woke you up. Good night."
Lance's voice is gone.
