So, just how often was Rose brought up in S3 of Doctor Who?

Direct References to Rose

The Runaway Bride

Set immediately after he loses her, this episode has the most references, as only makes sense. We've got the flashback during the dance scene, him talking about his 'friend' and spending Christmas with that friend's family, and we have Donna finding Rose's New Earth shirt. We have the end, where Donna wants to know the name of this friend and the Doctor ends the episode on 'Rose'.

Smith and Jones

Several allusions, but the only direct reference is at the end, when Martha asks him if he always travels alone and he explains that he normally travels with 'friends' and then expands into having recently traveled with one particular friend ("Rose, her name was...") who is with her family now.

The Shakespeare Code

The Doctor mentions Rose in the bedroom scene, when Martha is being distinctly less than helpful with the bantering to figure out the answer. And when I remember my recent rewatch of Fear Her, I understand it so much -- Rose was such a complete and equal partner to him. Examples of said teamwork: the Doctor notices the odd smell, Rose notices Chloe; the Doctor works out that the scribble-creature is made of graphite, Rose figures out why; the Doctor detects the pod in the street, Rose figures out where (and digs it up with a pickaxe! Yay for Action!Rose). They work together to solve the problem. I can understand him missing that, aching for it again.

The second reference isn't by the Doctor at all, but by the Carrionite. "The north wind blows, your heart grows cold, and carries down the distant... Rose." And the Doctor replies that her name doesn't weaken him, but keeps him fighting.

Gridlock

No direct reference by the Doctor. Martha asks if when he was on New Earth before, it was with Rose, and says, "Ever heard of the word 'rebound'?

Daleks in Manhattan

No direct references.

The Evolution of the Daleks

Martha talks to Tallulah and says that the Doctor used to travel with this one companion and that Martha feels that the Doctor isn't always seeing Martha when he looks at her, but sees that older companion instead. Rose's name is not mentioned.

The Lazarus Experiment

No direct references.

42

No direct references.

Human Nature

John Smith draws Rose's picture in his journal. "I call her Rose," he tells Joan. The words 'perfect Rose' are written on the page, along with 'she walks away' and variousness. First time that Rose's name has been mentioned since Gridlock.

Family of Blood

No direct references.

Blink

No direct references.

Utopia

Jack comes back and he brings the Rose references -- he asks about her, in the beginning, because he's afraid that she's dead. Later on, when he asks about why he's alive, the Doctor reveals that it's because Rose brought him back and we get a flashback of her -- the first time we see her since The Runaway Bride. Jack tells the Doctor that he checked in on Rose a bit, while she was growing up, and the Doctor tells him that Rose is trapped in a parallel world and they can never see her again.

The Sound of the Drums

No direct references.

The Last of the Time Lords

The Master attempts to use Rose's memory to belittle Martha ("You used to have companions who could imbibe the Time Vortex.") and fails because Martha has worked out her own worth and doesn't feel 'second-best' to anyone anymore.

And there you go. Mentioned in 8 out of 14 episodes and by name in 6 out of 14, in two contexts -- the first being the Doctor's grief, the second being Martha feeling as if she's in Rose's shadow . The second context is resolved in the final episode, when Martha realizes that she doesn't have to be Rose and she's good enough on her own (good for her!). It's arguable about whether or not the first was resolved this season (we won't really know until next year, I suppose).

Now, none of this is counting the many allusions we had to Rose this season, but since those are more debatable, I thought they should be in a different post. This was for direct references only. The 'allusions' post will be much, much longer.

It really is amazing that we got so many references to Rose that just can't be ignored, because they're direct references. I never anticipated getting something like that, both because of the way TV normally works ongoing storylines and the way DW has treated companions in the past.

Like you said, I'm cautious but hopeful that the Doctor's grief will continue to be addressed, and that it could mean a return of Rose. I think he's in a bit better place now, because during series 3 it wasn't just Rose; losing Rose made him confront his emotions about the Time War that he'd never really dealt with. Now that he's addressed some of his issues with being the only one left, perhaps next series will be about the Doctor figuring out where he goes from here. Whether it's to find a way back to Rose, or finally starting to move on and deal with all that, I don't think we're going to get another doom&gloom series. If nothing else, I don't think the show can stand that kind of thing, and although last night's ep would speak to the contrary, I don't think RTD is quite that dumb. ;-)

She really has been marked out as having a special place -- not just in the Doctor's heart, but in what she did in the universe. Like I said -- epic!

Indeed. I do believe that S4 will be cheerier than S3. Of course, it pretty much has to be.

Directed here via [livejournal.com profile] who_daily and I just wanted to say how nice it is to see a post that has love for Rose and some respect for Martha. Everything seems to be Martha-loving, Rose-hatin' or, very rarely, the opposite, so this was a lovely change. :)

My favourite reference of all is in 'The Shakespeare Code' when Shakespeare is composing a poem for Martha, and it has the "thou art more lovely and temperate than [a rose]" and the Doctor kind of looks away because he knows what's coming.

An interesting look at the season - here's hoping that there'll be some resolution next season, or, if we're very lucky, a return for Rose!

I've had my moments of being annoyed at Martha, but after seeing the whole of her S3 character arc, I'm really coming to like her. Because she always had great moments but, for me, this episode made her a great character.

Aw, that is sweet and sad. I'm planning on doing a post about the indirect references to Rose at some point, so I'll mention that bit in there.

Very, very lucky! I'd adore having Rose back, but I don't know how likely it is.
