Date: 2006-02-03 10:17 am (UTC)That yearning part of Daniel is really the part of him that I identified with and, well, kind of fell a little bit in love with. The desire to reach for that thing that flickers just beyond the horizon, that defines Daniel to me, still, in many ways.

Date: 2006-03-19 03:11 pm (UTC)The fade of Jack into Sumner actually made me worry for a second that Jack gets shot, which I knew didn't happen in the series, that's how much I got invested into the video.
The clips at the very beginning (pyramid stuff with Daniel discovering the existance of Atlantis) felt rushed and a little confusing--the slow lyricism of the song "Scarborough Fair" versus establishing a scene with fast cuts didn't work for me. I felt like, at the beginning, it would've been more comfortable and understandable a lead-in if there had just been one clip that showed Daniel discovering the stone that led to Atlantis, or if all the clips had just focused on Daniel for that few seconds, rather than showing that hey, Daniel was there when they discovered this stuff.
Then you lead right into intercutting the scene of the 8 symbol gate address with the first few "establishing knowledge" scenes in Rising where Daniel is there, and that really drew me into the vid.
I loved the establishing shot of the pyramid, though, even though the fast cuts afterwards lost me--it made me think of the pyramids (Goa'uld) versus Atlantis (Ancients), Daniel originally being a expert on the pyramids and that's why Catherine approaches him in the first place.
In fact, this vid also said to me "here is the expansion of Daniel as a
humanbeing"--from the reminder that Daniel is originally an archaeologist, to the clips from (I believe) "Torment of Tantalus" where he's actually risking his life to study for a few more seconds something which may have no practical purpose while the entire planet is collapsing, and then contrasting that with the end/chronologically latest clips which are scenes where he semi-willingly gives up knowledge because there are more important things.Scenes like not sticking his head in the Ancient database thingy, like going inside and shutting off the radiation even though he knows it's going to kill him, and especially the great tragedy of the piece, giving up the firsthand knowledge of the Ancient city because he believes he's more needed on Earth—those are scenes that the Daniel from the first (three/fourish) seasons of SG-1 would NOT have been able to do.
A few miscellaneous notes: that scene of Carson grinning with his mom serving him ALWAYS makes me crack up.
Creepy creep creep was my reaction to "scarlet battalion." That scene with Sumner having the Wraith creep up behind him and SKULL and then Daniel's team without him and then Jack fading into Sumner and the shot. That verse just never stops being creepy/sad.
I thought it was interesting the way you used Shifu's appearance/return/Kheb--because Shifu, in a way, is the Ascended being most connected to Daniel, since Shifu's is the son of his late wife's body. (Those New Age familial connections, so tricky to explain.) Knowledge of that connection makes the whole "Daniel doesn't get to go to Atlantis" thing even worse--not only is he the one who discovered it, who basically did ALL the work so that everyone else gets to go, he's also the one who most deserves to go because it's sort of an ancestral homeland for him (as a formerly Ascended being) and his um, family (Oma & Shifu).
I'm unfamiliar with one shot in this vid:
What's going through the water at approximately 1:50 seconds? I don't remember that.
And finally: are you hoping as hard as I am that Daniel finally gets to go to Atlantis next season?

Date: 2006-03-21 11:52 pm (UTC)When I watched it, it felt like my heart cried out in sympathy for Daniel because he's the one that did all the leg-work and he never gets to go there. He never gets to see where the Ancients lived--and really, he's the closest thing they've got to an unAscended Ancient. He's the sort of person that I like to pretend the Ancients were when they were corporeal (and Oma seems to agree with me).
Yes, completely, yes. He's the one who was first interested in them (urging them to go to the planet in The Fifth Race), he's the one who interacts with them, and he's the one who has experienced them, good and bad.
The fade of Jack into Sumner actually made me worry for a second that Jack gets shot, which I knew didn't happen in the series, that's how much I got invested into the video.
Hee, thank you.

Mmm. I see your point. It is little a bit faster than most everything else in the vid.
I loved the establishing shot of the pyramid, though, even though the fast cuts afterwards lost me--it made me think of the pyramids (Goa'uld) versus Atlantis (Ancients), Daniel originally being a expert on the pyramids and that's why Catherine approaches him in the first place.
I love the progression of Daniel's focus in canon, the way Sha're shifts his focus to the child, to Oma, to this entire new realm of exploration.
In fact, this vid also said to me "here is the expansion of Daniel as a human being"--from the reminder that Daniel is originally an archaeologist, to the clips from (I believe) "Torment of Tantalus" where he's actually risking his life to study for a few more seconds something which may have no practical purpose while the entire planet is collapsing, and then contrasting that with the end/chronologically latest clips which are scenes where he semi-willingly gives up knowledge because there are more important things.
That really is another part of Daniel's character that I find interesting. Because he has this big, huge love affair going on with knowledge, and the tension between that and what needs to be done really do drive his character in many ways.
Creepy creep creep was my reaction to "scarlet battalion." That scene with Sumner having the Wraith creep up behind him and SKULL and then Daniel's team without him and then Jack fading into Sumner and the shot. That verse just never stops being creepy/sad.
Thank you. It's a very creepy verse, really.

Yes, so true.
I'm unfamiliar with one shot in this vid:

That's from Maternal Instinct, Oma's power in the water.
And finally: are you hoping as hard as I am that Daniel finally gets to go to Atlantis next season?
Yes, definitely, yes.
Thank you so much for the comment -- it was lovely and long.

Date: 2006-04-09 12:40 am (UTC)--this is lovely and meaningful for Daniel, just really nice. A great evocation of all the work he did that made the Atlantis expedition possible, and how frustrating it must be for him that he can't be there. (btw, do read

Still, lovely, and thank you for sharing it.

*nods* Daniel's my favorite character, and I really wanted him to be able to go to Atlantis at some point and he's been thwarted so many times! He's the reason, over and over, that they learn more about the Ancients and the road to Atlantis and yet he still hasn't gotten to even visit it.
I cannot believe you'd never heard the song before! OMG I'm so old! ::wails::
I actually only had a dim idea of who S&G were. This comes from a childhood spent watching TRL, I'm guessing. I like most music that I hear, but my exposure to certain genres is limited.

Date: 2006-04-10 08:03 am (UTC)Those aching lyrics and Daniel's journey juxtaposed against Atlantis - so tragic and so glorious - tell the story of an ultimately thwarted journey so gracefully, and with such emotion.
That is exactly what I was trying to express with the vid. I'm so thrilled to hear that it worked for you. Yay!

Date: 2006-05-27 06:05 pm (UTC)Wow, was my reaction. This vid is really beautiful. I fully agree with what others have said about the story you tell about Daniel in this vid, but what really struck me most is how beautiful it is. I've watched Stargate countless times and I know that it is a show with wonderful special effects, but I never thought about it as a visually beautiful show before. I wish I had a large screen on my wall, so I could run this vid as a moving piece of art and look at how beautiful it is all the time.
Thank you very much for making this and for sharing it with us!

Date: 2006-08-10 05:47 am (UTC)That was gorgeous. So visually stunning, such a fitting song, and so very heartbreaking for Daniel.
This vid made me tear up a bit for Daniel (I'm such a softy for him, though).
I just wish it had been a tad louder.
That makes two of us! I couldn't figure out how to make the sound louder without making it go wonky on me. If I ever remaster the vid, that's one of the things that I'll go over again and try to fix.
Again, I'm so glad that you liked the vid. Thank you.

Date: 2006-11-11 09:11 am (UTC)I love how well this captures Daniel's yearning to go to Atlantis and how beautiful a place Atlantis is.
It really is a fantastically beautiful city. And all the possible knowledge locked up inside really makes me see why Daniel had his heart set on going there for so long.
The juxtaposition of everyone preparing to go and what awaits them on the other side and Daniel who has striven for all this time to discover where the city is being left behind is just stunning.
Thank you. I really enjoyed finding all the ways to try and show all of the work that Daniel put into finding Atlantis -- not just intellectually, but emotionally and spiritually as well.
I've always loved this song but couldn't see how it could ever be used in a songvid but this feels like such a perfect fit. Again, thank you so much for making and sharing.
You're welcome! I'm thrilled that the vid worked so well for you.

Date: 2008-01-25 05:03 pm (UTC)What an achingly beautiful vid! The blend of music and clips is so perfect and tells Daniel's story so well.
Daniel's my favorite character too, so I really adore this look at his journey. I love that you used clips from Maternal Instinct. Daniel's striving so hard for that knowledge, that something that once in a great while he misses the forest for the trees.
Thanks! Really beautiful!
